Runners swarm prairie for fundraiser

Later than normal, but still on time.

With Covid throwing things asunder, the 10th edition of Coupeville’s Race the Reserve moved to Oct. from its customary late-summer date, with runners hitting the trails Saturday morning.

Andy Wyman of Oak Harbor claimed top honors in the half marathon, breaking the tape in one hour, 24 minutes, 37.7 seconds.

He was joined by 10K winner Nicole Moore of Kenmore (40:13.5) and 5K champ Cole White of Coupeville (20:10.3) in bringing home first place.

The event is the primary fundraiser for the Coupeville High School Class of 2022, with money raised going to fund graduation week events.

Big meet, strong start

They ran with the big boys (and girls).

The Coupeville High School cross country team kicked off a new season Saturday with an appearance at the 42nd annual Carl Westling Invitational in Langley.

A day before, a storm ripped across Whidbey with ferocious winds turning the power off for much of the island.

But Saturday was fairly tranquil, offering the Wolves and first-year coach Paige Spangler a chance to strut their stuff.

Coupeville sent three girls to the line in the varsity race, while fielding a full seven-man varsity team and two runners in the JV rumble.

The Wolf boys held up very well, finishing 11th out of 13 teams in their division, despite the other squads all repping schools with larger student bodies.

Coupeville was the lone 2B team, with eight 1A schools, three 2A schools, and 4A Mariner also competing.

2A Cedarcrest claimed the team title, while Will Geisen of 2A Bellingham captured the individual crown, covering 5,000 meters in 16 minutes, 51.60 seconds.

On the girls side, Bellingham was the top team, with Kayla Aalpoel of 1A Meridian the first runner across the line in 19:20.70.

All together, the invitational featured runners from 29 high schools, while five middle schools competed in their own races.

They’re running full-tilt into a new season.

Coupeville High School cross country runners get their first taste of action against other schools Sept. 11, when they travel to Bellingham for the Sehome Invite.

Gritty Wolves storm back for win

“You showed grit and that’s what it took to win.”

As the Coupeville SWISH boys basketball team celebrated another win Saturday, that was the message coach Sean O’Neill delivered to his players.

And it was a message which resonated in the afterglow of a 27-25 victory over Sedro Woolley, a triumph clinched when Aiden O’Neill drained two free throws in the final moments.

Saturday, the Wolves opened slowly, but recovered with plenty of time left to play.

Overcoming “a horrific first eight minutes in which we couldn’t hit the broad side of a barn or play defense, we cleared our heads,” said Jon Roberts.

Twin terrors Hunter and Hurlee Bronec dominated in the paint, and Jack Porter drilled “a nice eight-footer” as Coupeville rallied to take a 15-14 lead into the halftime break.

Things weren’t going to be easy, however, as Sedro came out on fire to start the second, going off on a 6-0 tear.

Chase Anderson netted a three-ball for the Wolves to start the second comeback, then Coupeville clamped down on defense behind the spirited work of Landon Roberts.

Hunter Bronec paced his squad with a team-high 10 points, while Hurlee Bronec (6), Anderson (5), O’Neill (3), Jack Porter (2), and Johnny Porter (1) also scored.

Camden Glover and Landon Roberts round out the Coupeville roster, which is now 5-1 on the season heading into a bye week.
