After a tough opening week, the Coupeville High School varsity baseball squad bounced back big Saturday, drilling visiting North Mason 5-2.

Sparked by a powerhouse performance on the mound from senior Peyton Caveness, the Wolves improve to 1-2 on the very-young season.

With their next three games being their first Northwest 2B/1B League tilts, the victory provides a nice spark for the young hardball squad.

Saturday’s rumble with North Mason played out in the best weather, by far, that the prairie has seen during the start of spring sports.

That seemed to put a little extra zing in the offense, as the teams combined to score four of the game’s seven runs in the first inning.

The Bulldogs scratched out a run in the top half of the frame but couldn’t get more as Caveness bore down with a little defensive help from shortstop Cole White.

Given their first crack, the Wolves immediately responded, pushing three runs across to take a lead they wouldn’t relinquish.

White led off with a single, before Matthew Gilbert and Caveness walked to load the bases with no one out.

North Mason momentarily looked like it might escape, thanks to back-to-back strikeouts, but then Coupeville stung the visitors.

Coop Cooper eked out a bases-loaded walk to tie the game up at 1-1, before Johnny Porter laced a two-run double to right field to push his team in front.

Once he had the lead, Caveness was relentless, striking out seven as he held the visitors scoreless over the next five innings.

CHS tacked on a run in the third, with Camden Glover streaking home to score on a wild pitch, before Yohannon Sandles plated Landon Roberts in the fourth with an RBI single to right field.

The Wolves almost busted things wide open in the fifth, loading the bases with one out.

Unfortunately, North Mason escaped thanks to a double play on a line drive.

Not that it ultimately mattered, as Wolf hurlers Caveness and Glover combined to keep the Bulldogs largely at bay the rest of the way.

The visitors pushed one run across in the top of the seventh, before Glover ended the game with a bang, blowing a third strike past a hapless hitter to seal the deal.

The Wolves racked up five hits in the game, while showcasing eagle eyes as they garnered nine free passes.

Johnny Porter’s double was the big blow, with Roberts, Sandles, Glover, and White recording singles.

Cooper led the way with three walks, while Caveness twice was waved down to first after the North Mason pitcher couldn’t find the plate.

Gilbert, Roberts, Glover, and Jack Porter also got aboard thanks to showing patience at the plate, while Aiden O’Neill rounded out the Wolf lineup with some stellar defense.

Slow them down? Nope. Beat them? Unlikely.

The rampaging Coupeville High School JV boys’ basketball squad destroyed another foe Saturday, scoring a season high as it crushed host Chief Leschi 78-32.

The non-conference victory in Puyallup lifts the Wolves to 12-2 with two tilts left on the schedule.

Up first is the home finale against Friday Harbor Feb. 2, then a last road trip Feb. 6 to La Conner.

Those are rematches against rivals the Wolves beat by 14 and 39, respectively, the first time around.

Coupeville’s JV is an equal opportunity juggernaut, with a 7-1 road record and a 5-1 mark at home.

Repping a 2B school, the Wolves only blemishes have been a four-point defeat to 1A Mount Baker and a last-second one-point loss to 3A Oak Harbor.

Chief Leschi, like most of Coupeville’s opponents this season, was overmatched from the first tip to the final buzzer.

The Wolves blew out to a 24-3 lead by the first break, with Aiden O’Neill, Landon Roberts, Jack Porter, and Camden Glover combining to rain down pain on the Warriors.

The hosts actually put up a decent fight in the second quarter, outscoring Coupeville 13-9 to slightly trim the halftime deficit down to 33-16.

That was the cue for Jack Porter and Glover to go right back to work, the duo dominating in the paint as CHS doubled its output with a 33-point explosion in the third frame.

Comfortably up 66-26, with a running clock hurrying things along, the Wolves closed out the night and headed back to the bus, whistling as they went.

Jack Porter finished with a game-high 23, while Glover threw down 20 and Riley Lawless chipped in with six.

O’Neill, Davin Houston, Johnny Porter, Roberts, Malachi Somes, and Jayden McManus banked in four points apiece, while Easton Green (3) and Sage Arends (2) also kept the bookkeeper busy.

Makai Myles rounded out the active roster, providing a defensive buzz to the offensive-heavy brew concocted by the Wolves.

Landon Roberts has a secret. “Psst, mom, next game, I’m gonna win it at the buzzer!” (Photo courtesy Sherry Bonacci)

Mama said knock you out.

So, following in the grand tradition of LL Cool J, Coupeville gunner Landon Roberts did just that Monday, tipping in a game-winning shot at the buzzer to lift the Wolf JV boys’ hoops squad to a win over visiting Auburn Adventist Academy.

While mom Sherry (allegedly) danced in the stands, her son lifted dad Jon’s squad to an emotional 55-54 win.

The non-conference victory runs Coupeville’s record to 7-1, with seven straight W’s in the books now.

Up next for Landon and Company?

A chance to have the spotlight totally on them Wednesday, as they play host to Oak Harbor in a game set to tipoff at 5:15 in the CHS gym.

After that, Coupeville’s varsity will join the JV for a trip Friday to Orcas Island, capping a busy week of rim-wrecking action.

Monday’s battle was a wild one, with the teams exchanging body blows before the Wolves rallied at the end to maintain their hot streak.

“A pretty gritty game,” said Jon Roberts as he leaned against the gym wall, looking a little worn out but happy.

Auburn jumped out to a 15-12 lead at the first break, before Coupeville slightly trimmed the lead back to 26-24 at the half.

The Eagles inched ahead 43-40 through three quarters, before the Wolves made their move in the fourth behind big man Camden Glover, who went off for nine of his game-high 17 points in the frame.

The biggest bucket came at the end, however, with Auburn clinging to a 54-53 lead as the clock madly ticked down.

The ball went up, hit the rim, got knocked around and re-shot more than once, before Sherry’s favorite son knocked down the game-winner to send the middle school gym into madness.

Johnny Porter banked in 12 points in support of Glover’s 17, while Landon Roberts made the nets jump for nine.

Riley Lawless (8), Jack Porter (6), and Aiden O’Neill (3) rounded out the scoring, with Easton Green, Malachi Somes, and Jayden McManus also seeing floor time for the Wolves.

The future is bright.

Year six of the rebirth of Coupeville High School cross country featured eight runners advancing to state, with the Wolf boys claiming 10th place in the team standings — their best showing since the late ’70s.

Every harrier who made the trip to Pasco, and 15 of 18 on the roster, can return next season, when CHS coach Elizabeth Bitting will also get an influx of promising new freshmen.

But before looking ahead to what fall 2024 might bring, the Wolves joined the awards banquet scene Tuesday, putting a wrap on this go-round.

Sophomore Noelle Western and junior Carson Field, both now two-time state qualifiers, earned Most Valuable Runner status to headline the shindig.

How fast are Coupeville High School cross country runners?

Quick enough to get a sendoff to the state meet three days before they actually depart.

Now, some will say Tuesday’s farewell was set up because parent/teacher conferences mean there won’t be any classes between now and Friday.

But we know the truth.

Coupeville sends a complete boys’ team to the big run for the first time since 1977.

One team, one dream.

Noelle Western, holding the “our sport is your sport’s punishment” sign, makes her second trip to state.
