Fight for your right (to be in first place)

We’re starting to see some movement.

As we work our way towards the end of March, Northwest 2B/1B League teams are ramping up and beginning to play more conference tilts, accounting for some jockeying in the standings.

If weather permits, the week ahead will keep that trend going.

Coupeville High School baseball has four games in four days — all NWL bouts — hosting Mount Vernon Christian Tuesday and Darrington Wednesday.

After that, the Wolves head to Friday Harbor to face their biggest hardball rival in a Friday afternoon doubleheader.

Meanwhile, the CHS softball squad hosts Darrington, then plays its own twin-bill on Friday Harbor, while Wolf girls tennis travels to Oak Harbor Friday for a non-conference match-up.

Keep pilin’ up the wins

Playoff fever grips the land.

The four 1B schools from the Northwest 2B/1B League are already deep into postseason play, while the 2B squads kick off games this coming week.

On the 1B side of things, both boys and girls teams from Concrete and Darrington have been eliminated, while their counterparts from Mount Vernon Christian and Orcas Island are still alive.

The 2B playoffs feature both boys and girls teams from Coupeville and La Conner, while Friday Harbor had their postseason dreams ended twice Saturday.

The Wolf girls kick things off Tuesday, Feb. 15 at home against Auburn Adventist.

A win there, and CHS advances to play La Conner two nights later.

Meanwhile, the Coupeville boys, sitting at 15-0, don’t play until the district title game Thursday, Feb. 17.

So, where does everyone stand?

All Alex Murdy can smell is success.

Things are getting serious.

The four 1B schools in the seven-team Northwest 2B/1B League started the playoffs this past week, while the 2B schools continue to wrap up conference action.

Coupeville High School has two nights of regular season play left to finish, with both the boys and girls traveling to La Conner Thursday, Feb. 10.

After that, the Wolf girls celebrate Senior Night and host Friday Harbor Feb. 12.

Postseason action for the 2B schools starts with the district tournament Feb. 15 and 17, with all the action going down in Coupeville.

The Wolf boys have clinched their playoff berth and are in the driver’s seat to claim the #1 seed, while the CHS girls are a win away from sealing their own invite to districts.

Wolf boys, Braves girls stay hot

The Wolf boys plan for greatness.

Everyone played.

After a couple of weeks dominated by games being cancelled by Covid protocols and weather, Northwest 2B/1B League basketball teams got a full schedule in the books this past week.

Along the way, the Coupeville boys and La Conner girls asserted themselves as the top teams in the conference, fending off Mount Vernon Christian.

Now, the 1B league schools are flying towards the start of the postseason, while 2B schools Coupeville, Friday Harbor, and La Conner take a more leisurely route.

CHS still has two weeks left in the regular season before it hosts the district tourney, an event which could very likely feature both Wolf squads.

The coming week kicks off with the Coupeville girls hosting Sedro-Woolley Tuesday, Feb. 1 in a non-conference tilt, before both Wolf programs amble off to Friday Harbor Feb. 4.

Wolves pile up hoops wins

CHS girls basketball coaches survey the action.

It was an undefeated week.

Not a perfect week, as the Coupeville High School varsity girls basketball team had to postpone two of its four games.

But when the Wolves did take the floor, whether it was the boys or girls, both varsity squads KO’d every contender.

The CHS boys picked up four wins to stretch their unbeaten streak to 11 games, while the Wolf girls rebounded to drill Concrete and South Whidbey after waving off Darrington and Friday Harbor.

The week ahead is a little slower, with the boys set to travel to Mount Vernon Christian Thursday, Jan. 27, then trek to Granite Falls two days later.

The girls have just one game, and it’s a recent addition to the schedule — a journey up Island to play Oak Harbor next Saturday.
