Small school student, big volleyball dreams

Coupeville is going to the big time.

Wolf senior-to-be Lyla Stuurmans made the cut and was tabbed as one of 12 players named to the U19 Puget Sound Region All-Star volleyball squad.

That team travels to Des Moines, Iowa July 16-22 for the USA Volleyball All-Star tournament, where it will clash with rivals from other regions.

Lyla Stuurmans is one of three Wolf spikers who made the first cut in qualifying for the travel squad.

Fellow senior Mia Farris was a finalist for the U19 team as well, while Lyla’s younger sister, incoming freshman Tenley, is currently competing for a roster spot with the U15 team.

That squad will be announced next week.

Lyla is proof players from small schools can make a big impact, as her new teammates hail from bigger programs such as Archbishop Thomas Murphy, Bellevue Christian, Juanita, Meadowdale, and Arlington.

Coupeville is making a mark in the volleyball world.

Three Wolf spikers have made it through the initial round of regional tryouts as they pursue spots with the USA Volleyball (Puget Sound Region) All-Stars.

Now, seniors-to-be Mia Farris and Lyla Stuurmans and incoming freshman Tenley Stuurmans are among the final 40 players vying for 12 slots with U19 and U15 squads, respectively.

“They have a rigorous camp ahead of them, and a really great opportunity to get additional training and experience,” said Coupeville High School coach Cory Whitmore.

The older duo attend camp this weekend, June 8-9, while their younger teammate gets her shot June 15-16.

After those camps, the 12 players selected to the team will go to Des Moines, Iowa for All-Star Championships, where they’ll go spike to spike with players from across the country.

Whether they make the final squad or not, Whitmore is thrilled to see his players step up and take on new, big-time challenges.

“All three are very self-driven and made the decision to go for it all on their own, and I’m so proud of them for pursuing this opportunity to grow their game,” he said.

“It really showcases their passion for the sport and a determination to improve.

“I’m looking forward to hearing all about it!”

Busy weekend, big results

She survived and thrived.

Coupeville High School junior Lyla Stuurmans closed out the two-day heptathlon at the Washington State Combined Events Championship Saturday, adding another PR in the javelin as she topped or tied her best career mark in four of seven events.

Her heave went 61 feet, four inches, while she also flew 14-01 in the long jump and hit the tape in the 800 in two minutes, 34.29 seconds, which was a season-best.

Stuurmans claimed 5th in the 800, her top finish in any event at the prestigious showdown at Lake Stevens High School.

The championships drew 32 competitors from across all classifications (4A-1B), with Rochelle Jeffries of Foster making off with the heptathlon crown.

Saturday’s finale came on the heels of Friday’s opener, in which Stuurmans competed in the 200, the shot put, the high jump, and the 100 hurdles.

She’s the second Wolf in as many years to qualify for the championships, as Aidan Wilson competed in the decathlon in 2023.

She’s here for all the events

Her days are busy.

Coupeville High School junior Lyla Stuurmans is putting a cap on her track and field season by competing in the heptathlon at the Washington State Combined Events Championship this weekend.

The meet, held at Lake Stevens High School, began Friday and ends Saturday, with seven different events in play.

Stuurmans competed in the 100 hurdles, high jump, shot put, and 200 during day one, with the long jump, javelin, and 800 slated for the finale.

She set a PR in the hurdles, hitting the tape in 21.06 seconds, and tied her PR in the 200 at 29.19.

It was that kind of day for Stuurmans, who lobbed the shot put 23 feet, 00.75 inches in her debut in the event, while narrowly missing her PR in the high jump, clearing the bar at 4-03.25.

“The Franchise” is the second Wolf in as many years to compete in the combined events championship.

She’s following in the footsteps of Aidan Wilson, who finished 7th in the decathlon last spring.

Pole vaulters pace Wolves at state

The pole vaulters got them on the scoreboard.

Freshman Axel Marshall and junior Cael Wilson captured Coupeville’s first medals Friday during day two of the 2B state track and field championships.

Competing at Zaepfel Stadium in Yakima, Marshall soared 18 inches higher than his previous PR to finish fifth, while Wilson claimed 8th in the event for a second-straight season.

Marshall is the 88th Wolf to earn a state meet medal in the modern era (1963-2024).

While the duo were the only medal winners for Coupeville, the Wolves did nail down six PR’s on the day.

The three-day meet wraps Saturday, kicking off with the “opening ceremonies,” then getting into another full day of competition.

Coupeville will have Aleera Kent (3200), Carson Field (3200), Nick Guay (High Jump), Carly Burt (Pole Vault), Aleksia Jump (Pole Vault), Reese Wilkinson (Discus), and Zac Tackett (Discus) in action during the finale.
