It was the end, but not the end.

Monday marked Senior Night for six Coupeville High School baseball players, the final time they played a regular season game on their home field.

But, after two road games to cap things, the Wolves will be back to Robert Sherman Field May 9 for a home playoff game.

That will be the real swan song for Taylor Consford, Clay Reilly, Aiden Crimmins, Ethan Marx, Kory Score and Jonathan Thurston.

Postseason ball is about making a run at a state title, though, and Monday was about CHS coach Chris Smith having a chance to publicly praise his guys in front of friends, family and fans.

It was also a chance for local paparazzi John Fisken to snap some glossy pics to commemorate the moment.

The photos above are courtesy him, and, as always, we appreciate his charity.

Wolf freshman Ulrik Wells made his high school football debut, and he had a boisterous fan club ready to cheer him on.

No one travels like Wolf fans.

And yes, going all the way out to Camp Casey isn’t exactly the same as trekking to, say, Eastern Washington. I get that.

But there was still a pretty good turnout Friday night for little more than a scrimmage, as Coupeville and visiting Lakeside stretched out their football muscles.

Wanderin’ paparazzi John Fisken was in the area and snapped some pics of the Wolf National faithful to go along with his photos of gridiron warriors.

Maggie Crimmins

Maggie Crimmins, owner of a truly beautiful soul. (John Fisken photos)

There is a special light which shines out of some people.

Maggie Crimmins is one of those people.

The Coupeville High School sophomore, who hits the big 1-6 today, is an athlete, yes, and a veteran of many sports — basketball, track, volleyball, tennis.

But if we took all the athletic stuff away and just looked at Maggie the person, she would still tower over the world.

Since her early days, she has possessed a sweetness of nature, a warm personality and a genuine kindness to her soul, that few others have.

It helps that she comes from good stock — parents Jon and Jodi are the gold standard — and her large, extended family (including highly-entertaining, underwear Twinkie-eating older brother Aiden) doesn’t have a rotten apple in the bunch.

I’ve known Maggie since back in the olden days, when both her mom and aunt Shawn worked at Videoville and Miriam’s Espresso, and she has never changed.

At least not at her core.

I get the whole point about how she’s aging. I understand how a calendar works…

But, at her core, Maggie is the same now at 16 as when she was three.

And I’m pretty sure she’ll still be as kind and caring and brilliant as she moves through more birthdays.

Some people have to work at being good people. Others just have a beautiful soul from day one, and Miss Crimmins is one of the latter.

As she celebrates her cake day today, on the last day of Spring Break, we want to wish her (and her family) all the best.

Happy birthday, Maggie! May it shine as brightly as you do every day.

Thoroughly thrashing visiting Chimacum Thursday night, the Coupeville High School spikers continued their recent surge in the standings.

Big highs and big lows.

Riding the roller-coaster Wednesday night, the Coupeville High School JV volleyball squad was ultimately edged in a thriller at Darrington.

The 15-25, 25-22, 25-15 non-conference loss busted a two-match win streak for the young Wolves, dropping them to 2-3.

They return to action immediately, as Chimacum comes to Whidbey for a match Thursday afternoon, with the JV tipping first at 4:30 PM.

Despite putting up strong stats as a team (12 service aces and 15 kills), Coupeville had a bit too many dips to put the match away.

“When we were hot, we were hot, but when we got cold … something to learn from,” said Wolf JV coach Heidi Wyman.

Ashley Menges paced the Wolves with 12 assists, while Maggie Crimmins racked up four kills at the net.

“As Maggie gets more confident, she is really starting to shine,” Wyman said.

One area where the Wolves were dead-on was at the service stripe, where almost every player powered through with impressive touch.

Allison (Wenzel), Kameryn (St Onge), Maddy (Hilkey), Ashley, Kenzi (LaRue) and Sarah (Wright) each had one perfect serving game,” Wyman said. “Kameryn actually had two.”
