Cold-blooded closers.

The fast-rising stars who grace the roster for Coupeville’s 6th grade SWISH boys’ basketball squad know how to put a game away.

Clinging to a four-point lead in the third quarter Saturday in their season-opening game in Mount Vernon, the Wolves suddenly clicked a switch.

Boom! 13-3 run to slam the door shut and a 37-23 victory over Orcas Island.

Better yet, the young Wolves, who hit the boards with authority, spread the offensive glory around, with four different players getting in the score-book.

Matthew Kelley paced Coupeville with a game-high 18, while Daniel Olson banked in nine, including a long-range bomb from three point land.

Sage Downes dropped in six, Jake Mitten popped for two and Coupeville picked up a basket for free when their opponents accidentally scored on the wrong basket.

swish

Yep, this team is ready for its close-up.

The future of Wolf boys’ basketball is on its way and it includes my former “assistant manager.”

During my years at David’s DVD Den (2007-2009), Daniel Olson would camp out behind the counter and operate the computer and cash drawer whenever his family came to the store.

Jump forward five years and Olson is now a sixth grader(!) at Coupeville Middle School (older brother Ben is a freshman on the high school JV squad) and a fast-rising b-ball star.

This season the younger Olson is joining a batch of other hot-shooting hoops wizards on a Coupeville SWISH basketball team.

The squad, which is made up of nine sixth-graders and one precocious, fast-dribbling third grader (Logan Downes), is in its third week of practice. The first game is Jan. 10.

The roster includes Olson, Logan Downes, older brother Sage Downes, Jake Mitten, Erik Webster, Michael Laska, Alex Jimenez, Matthew Kelley, Dakota Eck and Raymond Anderson.

With the exception of the younger Downes, everyone on the roster has at least four seasons of ball under their belts.

Kelley, who played for an 8-4 Oak Harbor team last year, is the seasoned vet, entering his seventh season.

Current CHS freshman (and big brothers) Hunter Downes and Ben Olson help coach the team when they have a break in their own basketball schedule.

“Singin’ in the rain? More like mumbling to myself while freezin’ my rear in the rain…”

The calendar says it’s basketball season, but soccer wasn’t quite done just yet.

Kickin’ in the rain, the BU13 Whidbey Islanders soccer squad, which includes a number of guys from Coupeville, played its season finale Saturday and John Fisken braved the drops to capture the pics above.

While I’ve ID’d the Wolves (hopefully correctly) I have no roster and no freakin’ idea who the other kids might be.

I assume you’re all from Oak Harbor.

If that’s true and you want to be ID’d on a blog called Coupeville Sports, maybe get your parents to move.

Otherwise, well, you got your picture on the internet, so … partial win for you.

The goals keep coming. The wins not so much.

Roughed up by a very physical Tracyton team, the Whidbey Islanders BU13 soccer squad fell 5-2 Saturday in a battle for second place in their league.

The loss dropped the Islanders to 7-2-2 with one game left Dec. 6 in Oak Harbor.

Whidbey played their foes even through the first half, forging a 0-0 tie in a game that saw its top two scorers, Coupeville’s Matthew Kelley and Aram Leyva, dropped to the pitch seven times.

Tracyton came out of the break on fire, netting two quick goals, but the Islanders refused to yield.

Kelley popped in a goal from 20 yards out with two defenders on his heels, then the Wolf connection hooked up for a game-tying goal.

Coupeville’s Michael Laska sent a cross to Leyva, who settled it, then knocked it onto Kelley’s foot.

With the Tracyton goalie on his knees, Kelley took advantage and lined it over his head into the back of the net.

The tie was short-lived however, as Tracyton knocked the Islanders off the ball the rest of the way and threw down three game-busting scores.

The Coupeville gunners are alive and kicking.

Powered by high-scoring Cow Town residents Aram Leyva and Matthew Kelley, the Whidbey Islanders BU13 FC 01 soccer squad is cruising along at 7-1-2 on the season.

The Islanders head into a showdown for second-place in their 12-team league with a road game at Tracyton Nov. 22, then close the regular season with a make-up game in Oak Harbor Dec. 6.

Whidbey won its most recent game, bouncing visiting Snohomish United 2-1 Nov. 15.

Leyva punched in the first goal of the game, launching a 25-foot shot from the right side.

Kelley tacked on a score mere moments later, squeezing between two defenders and popping a hard shot into the far corner of the net.

Snohomish rallied a bit in a very physical game, scoring on a penalty kick re-do.

Its first shot was blocked, but an Islander strayed into the box early, giving United renewed life.

After that, it was all about the defense, as Whidbey shut down the field and held on for the crucial win.
