Welcome to the big time, Matthew Ward.

The Coupeville High School senior made his debut Thursday at the 2B state track and field championships in Yakima and had an immediate impact.

Shattering his PR in the triple jump by a foot-and-a-half, Ward earned 5th place in his final run in the red and black.

He becomes the 91st CHS athlete to bring a medal home in the modern era of state track meets, which runs from 1963-2025.

Ward was a solid jumper all year, with his previous best being 40 feet, two inches at the district meet, but he saved his best (41-07.50) for the final weekend of the season.

The four points he earned for his performance has Coupeville sitting in 8th place in the 2B boys team standings after day one.

Toledo leads with 13 points with two of 17 events complete.

Ward was one of five Wolves to compete Thursday as the three-day meet kicked off with a handful of events.

Lyla Stuurmans, Malachi Somes, and Carson Field ran in the 1600 finals, while Chase Anderson vied in the prelims for the 100, but failed to advance to Saturday’s eight-man finale.

Coupeville has a busy schedule Friday as the state meet runs all day.

The Wolves are slated to compete in nine events, including finals in the girl’s discus, as well as the boys high jump, pole vault, and long jump.

Thursday results:

GIRLS:

1600 (Finals) — Lyla Stuurmans (14th) 5:48.66 *PR*

Matthew Ward is flying high.

The Coupeville High School student has had a busy senior year, playing soccer and track and field for the Wolves, with a trip to the state championships in his near future.

Ward earned his ticket to Yakima Saturday by winning the triple jump at the District 1 meet, setting a PR while doing so.

But that’s not the only honor he’s earned recently, as a nearly life-long odyssey with scouting is also reaching new heights.

Ward, who started scouts in first grade, reached Eagle rank May 15, just two weeks shy of his 18th birthday.

He’s following in the footsteps of his dad, also an Eagle Scout, and doing it with the same group — Scout Troop 4058 — that pops achieved the honor with.

Ward (far left) and his companions hit the trail.

As he’s worked his way through the various ranks leading up to being an Eagle Scout, Ward has been an active member of the troop, attending the Philmont High adventure scout camp in New Mexico with fellow senior scouts in 2023.

Becoming an Eagle Scout includes completing an “Eagle project,” in which a scout works with a non-profit organization.

Ward chose the Greenbank Progressive Club, building them a storage shed.

Up next for the high achiever is the Eagle Scout ceremony, set for July 11.

Penciling out his project.

Making sure all the measurements are correct.

Mission accomplished.

The second half run begins.

Returning from a spring break layoff, the Coupeville High School track and field squad jumped right into the deep end Saturday, competing at the 31-team Birger Solberg Invitational in Bellingham.

Despite repping one of the smallest student bodies in the field, the Wolves held their own against their big school rivals.

Coupeville’s girls finished 17th in the team standings, with their male counterparts claiming 18th on their side of the leaderboard.

Shorecrest (girls) and Shorewood (boys), both 3A schools, finished atop the standings.

On an individual basis, Katie Marti and Matthew Ward had the best performances for the Wolves.

Marti finished 2nd in the shot put, out of 30 competitors, and 3rd (of 28) in the discus, while Ward was 4th (of 17) in the triple jump.

The Solberg meet, hosted by Sehome, featured several events the Wolves don’t normally see, such as a 4 x 800 relay and a steeplechase.

With the Wolves racking up 16 PRs Saturday against stellar competition, it’s a strong start to the latter part of the season.

“A bright and energetic day as we eased back into the groove after spring break,” said Wolf coaches Bob Martin and Elizabeth Bitting.

“Plenty of sunshine, strong finishes, and everyone held their own.”

Coupeville has three meets left, two at their own stadium, before beginning postseason action at the Northwest 2B/1B League Championships.

Up first is a home meet Wednesday, April 16, followed by a trip to the Cashmere Invitational three days later.

Let the PRs and wins rain down.

The weather report Wednesday promised death and destruction, or at least epic-sized hail, lightning, and thunder, but the Coupeville High School track team is too quick for Mother Nature.

Putting up a strong team-wide performance in Mount Vernon, the Wolves collected 13 wins, 69 PRs and a triumph in the boys’ team standings at a 10-team meet.

The CHS male athletes, spurred on by eight victories, racked up an even 200 points to stay way ahead of runner-up Mount Vernon Christian, which finished with 126.5.

On the girls’ side of things, MVC survived a three-way battle with La Conner and Coupeville to claim the team title.

The Hurricanes amassed 158 points, with the Braves (125.5) and Wolves (114) hot on their heels.

Lyla Stuurmans (800, 1600), Cael Wilson (High Jump, Pole Vault), Katie Marti (Shot Put, Discus) and Carson Field (800, 1600) each won two events, while Preston Epp was tops in the 400 and ran a leg on a triumphant 4 x 100 relay unit.

He was joined by Marquette Cunningham, Davin Houston, and Chase Anderson on that squad.

Rounding out Coupeville’s winners were Matthew Ward (Triple Jump), Aleksia Jump (Pole Vault), and George Spear (3200).

The results left Wolf coaches suitably impressed.

“They’re in a groove,” said Bob Martin. “Great meet — fast, focused, and ahead of the storm!”

Part of Coupeville’s squad returns to action this Saturday with an appearance at the Stanwood Freshman/Sophomore Showcase, with the spotlight fully turned on the young guns.

Blake Burrows and his teammates are making some noise. (Parker Hammons photo)

It’s a strong early showing.

With an emphasis on early.

The track and field season is only two meets deep for Coupeville High School athletes, but the Wolves are already putting up top-notch performances.

A look at the current statewide Top 10 lists for 2B schools shows 18 Cow Town stars making an appearance, with six of those popping up twice.

Now, a lot can change in just the week ahead, much less a whole season, but it’s an impressive start.
