Not bad. Not bad at all.

Facing off Saturday with two-time defending 1B/2B state soccer champs Crosspoint Academy, the public school kids more than held their own.

Riding goals from May Rose, Bree Daigneault and Jenn Spark, the Coupeville High School girls’ soccer squad came within a whisker of an upset, before being nipped 4-3.

“The match was epic and the girls are learning to ratchet up their level of intensity to match and surpass their opponent,” said CHS coach Troy Cowan. “Each match we get faster, stronger and better prepared for our impending conference matches.”

The non-conference loss dropped the Wolves to 2-3-3 on the season, while Crosspoint won its fourth straight.

Coupeville will now have 10 days to tweak all the small things, as it’s off until a non-conference game at La Conner Oct. 13.

Two days after that, the Wolves kick off the first of six straight 1A Olympic League matches, which will decide the squad’s postseason fate.

Saturday, facing a school it lost to 7-1 last year, Coupeville clamped down on both sides of the ball.

Crosspoint had outscored its last three opponents 27-1, with nine goals in each of those games, but the Wolf defense held them to less than half of that per-game average.

While Spark is the rock for the Wolf defense, her fellow defenders all stepped up big.

One young gun drew big-time praise from her coach, for her play on the afternoon and all season.

“How impressed I have been with one of my players of late. She is the hardest-working player on the pitch, never complains, gives me and her teammates 100% every second on the pitch and does it with a smile on her face,” Cowan said. “She has grown leaps and bounds from her freshman year to yesterday. She is gritty, tough-minded and passionate!

Taichen Rose has left an indelible mark on me and demonstrated the true spirit of sportsmanship and the results of possessing a positive perspective.”

And, when the Wolves had their chances on offense, they took full advantage, and not always from the expected gunners.

Kalia Littlejohn, who entered with seven goals in seven games, was held scoreless, but set up Daigneault for her second goal of the season.

Spark crushed home her third score of the season, with a little help from an opposing player.

The senior with the golden leg let loose with a corner kick that curled at the last second, then exploded off of a Crosspoint defender’s noggin and into the corner of the net.

Wrapping up Coupeville’s scoring burst was May Rose, as the junior hit pay-dirt after being set up by Mia Littlejohn.

One of the most unsung Wolves, the always-hard working older sister in the Rose & Rose Wrecking Crew was sky-high afterwards.

Especially with one of her best friends, Daigneault, also scoring, while the third of the Three Amigos, CHS spiker Ally Roberts, screamed her approval from the sidelines.

“I know what it feels like to cry when you’re over emotionally happy now,” Rose posted on Twitter in the afterglow of her big moment.

To her, and all of her Wolf teammates, who never broke, and barely yielded, in the face of a true powerhouse, job well done, ladies.

Is there anything Sylvia Hurlburt can’t do?

The answer starts with an N and ends with an O.

The list goes on and on for the Coupeville High School senior.

Cheer captain. Record-setting track runner. Hard-core ballerina with toes ‘o steel. And that’s just the tip of a very large iceberg of talent.

Her latest exploit? Camerawoman, photographer, paparazzi … stalking and shooting (peacefully) the Wolf girls’ soccer squad.

That’s all Miss Hurlburt.

It’s official. Fall sports have begun.

The Coupeville High School girls’ soccer squad got things kicked off Thursday, taking part in a jamboree at Oak Harbor.

While the scores didn’t count, it did give the Wolves some real-world prep for their season opener (Tuesday, Sept. 8 at Mount Vernon Christian) and, maybe most importantly, gave the booters a chance to get comfortable in front of the camera again.

Seeing as how their photo game is already at mid-season peak, the season looks like a bright one.

Oh, and those scores?

The Wolves battled to a strong 1-1 tie with South Whidbey, a team they will play for real in a week, then were narrowly nipped 1-0 by host 3A Oak Harbor.

Sophomore Sage Renninger tallied Coupeville’s goal, hitting on a shot described by Wolf coach Troy Cowan as “a bullet from point blank range that left thread marks on the ball, it was hit so hard.”

Lauren Grove and Mckenzie Meyer shared time in goal, and the duo, who are replacing the graduated Julia Myers, both sparkled.

Cowan tabbed Meyer as the night’s MVP, but he was pleased with the play from his entire roster.

“The girls showed some real spunk and fire!!!,” he said. “Both our opponents were tough and played hard and that brought the best out of the Lady Wolves which I was pleasantly happy about.

“I saw some scrappy Wolves tonight that didn’t back down and gave it as good as they got it!!! It’s going to be a good season!”

Clockwise, from top right, birthday trio Jovanah Foote, May Rose and (old school) Brad Sherman.

Somewhere in Wolf Nation, right now, birthday cake is being served.

It has to be.

March 10 is a banner day for Coupeville High School athletic stars to have been born, with at least three (that I know of) sharing the day.

Current Wolves May Rose and Jovanah Foote are still blazing trails of success, while Brad Sherman’s exploits at CHS were so legendary they named the road I live on after him.

Well, at least that’s what I tell the more gullible tourists…

The trio may have played different sports along the way, but they share much in common, from their snappy personalities to the joy they have displayed when competing.

Rose, Foote and Sherman have all left a positive mark on their school and their town and I could go on and on, or I could just wish them happy birthdays and point you in the direction of the feature stories I previously wrote on each of them.

If I do that, maybe I’ll have some time to track down some of that elusive birthday cake…

To bask in the glow of their awesomeness, check out:

The schedule has been sort of odd this season.

With Coupeville High School adjusting to a new league, less conference games and a more jumbled non-conference schedule, there have been some weird gaps between games.

At least it seems that way.

Case in point, the Wolf volleyball squad (0-4) hasn’t played in 12 days.

They return to the court tonight (JV 5 PM, varsity 6:15), when they host Bellevue Christian. Then, they’re off for another six days.

The CHS soccer squad (3-2) suddenly added a new game to the schedule, plugging in a non-conference affair at Oak Harbor tonight. Kickoff is 6 PM.

That game will bring together a huge chunk of the GU18 Whidbey Islanders squad, with Wolves like Micky LeVine and Jacki Ginnings facing off with their select teammates who play for OHHS such as Becca Pabona and Jacalyn Hefflefinger.

Football (3-2) and boys’ tennis (2-4) both return to action Friday.

The gridiron squad travels to Port Townsend (5 PM kickoff), while the netters will welcome the Chimacum/Port Townsend combined team, with first serve at 4 PM.
