Everything is a little topsy-turvy at the moment.

Only a smidge of the conference season has been played, yet things look totally different than in years past.

A new-look Coupeville High School girls basketball squad dropped its Olympic League opener to Port Townsend, ending a three-year, 27-game winning streak against conference foes.

While there are still miles (and eight conference games) to go, the Wolves find themselves looking up at other teams for the first time since joining the four-team league in 2014.

On the other side of the ball, the CHS boys are tasting rarefied air.

After rallying from 12 points down in the fourth quarter to stun defending league champ Port Townsend in overtime, the Wolves sit atop the standings.

There’s still a lot to be played in that race, as well, but, for the moment, the view from the penthouse is a sweet one.

Both Coupeville teams have a stretch of non-league contests ahead of them, and don’t face off with another conference rival until Jan. 6.

Then, they close with eight of their final 10 games inside the Olympic League, the time period when playoff dreams will truly live and die.

Until then, take a gander at varsity scoring stats and league standings through Dec. 17:

Sarah Wright knocked down four points and played aggressively on defense Saturday against highly-touted Bellevue Christian. (Photo by JohnsPhotos.net)

It’s a work in progress, and they showed progress.

Playing aggressively, yet under control, in the first half Saturday, the rebuilding Coupeville High School girls basketball team rattled visiting Bellevue Christian.

And, while the Vikings, who boasted a huge height advantage, eventually pulled away for a 51-29 non-conference win, it didn’t come as easily as the score might indicate.

BC, which improves to 5-2, padded the margin with a string of fourth-quarter buckets.

Otherwise, the game was a pitched battle until Coupeville, now 1-7, suffered through a crippling third-quarter shooting drought.

The Wolves jumped on the Vikings early for an 8-2 lead, and led as late as 15-14 with three minutes to play in the first half.

Ema Smith, joining the starting lineup, gave CHS a jolt of energy, knocking down a pull-up jumper to open the scoring, then draining a pair of free throws.

While all of her points came in the first quarter, the junior fireball played wicked defense all game.

Teaming up with Sarah Wright to form a feisty, elbows swingin’ duo, Smith helped keep Bellevue’s Twin Towers under control for much of the game.

The Vikings boast four players 5-10 or taller (to just one on Coupeville’s current roster), and two of those are 6-1 and 6-2.

Smith and Wright tangled with the tall trees, bumping and knocking them out of place on a regular basis, forcing the BC duo to sweat for what buckets they could get.

Wright hit the boards with a wild glee, fighting for every loose ball like her life depended on it, and she banged home a bucket after nabbing a first quarter carom.

Up 8-2, the Wolves hit a bit of a dry stretch, allowing BC to run off nine straight points and regain the lead at 11-8 heading into the second.

Coupeville had an immediate response, however, as Lindsey Roberts drilled a three-ball to kick off the second quarter. The play was a thing of beauty, as the ball skipped from Chelsea Prescott to Wright to Roberts to the bottom of the net.

Breaking Bellevue’s press on back-to-back plays, the Wolves snagged their final lead at 15-14 when Prescott slapped home a layup off of a long pass.

Once again, a very-solid, veteran BC squad held fast, though, closing the half on a 10-3 run.

And yet, there was a hint of trepidation in their eyes as the Vikings exited the floor.

After blowing South Whidbey out by 30 Friday, the second half of their Whidbey doubleheader wasn’t going completely to plan.

Wright came out swinging in the third quarter, backing down her defender and banking home a bucket on the first play to pull the Wolves within 24-20.

Unfortunately, that was the moment Coupeville’s shooting touch decided to vanish.

The Wolves only managed one field goal the rest of the night, a put-back from Roberts late in the fourth.

Other than a string of free-throws, CHS couldn’t get anything to drop over the final 15 minutes, including a three-ball from Mikayla Elfrank which went 95% of the way down, then somehow popped right back out.

While Coupeville couldn’t buy a field goal in the late going, it did enjoy one of its best shooting performances from the free throw line this season, hitting 12-18. That included 7-10 in the second half.

Elfrank paced CHS with nine points. That lifts her to 215 for her career and slides her past former Wolf great Linda Cheshier into 50th place on the Wolf girls career scoring chart.

Prescott and Roberts added five apiece, Wright and Ema Smith both popped for four, and Kyla Briscoe and Scout Smith each dropped in a free throw.

Avalon Renninger was a whirling dervish on defense during her stint on the floor.

The first shots have been fired.

Week two of the basketball season featured the first showdown between Olympic League foes, with Port Townsend and Chimacum getting together for a doubleheader.

The RedHawks and Cowboys split the twin-bill, leaving, for the moment, two different schools atop the very-early league standings.

For Coupeville, it’s all been about non-conference play so far, but that’s about to change.

The Wolves get a taste, but just a taste, of league action Tuesday when they face off with Port Townsend.

Then they don’t return to conference play until Jan. 6.

For the CHS girls, the match-up with the RedHawks gives them an opportunity to kick off a bid for a fourth-straight league title.

The Wolf boys, meanwhile, would like to fire an early warning shot at Port Townsend, which is the defending champs on that side of the ball.

Ema Smith fights through the Mount Vernon Christian defense. (Photos by JohnsPhotos.net)

Allison Wenzel keeps a watchful eye on the defender as she drives the ball up-court.

As a work in progress, the Coupeville High School girls basketball squad is going to hit a few bumps in the road this season.

Having lost four starters, the Wolves are not the same team which cruised to a third-straight league title last year.

They are young, talented, but still developing. And that was showcased Friday night.

At times, the Wolves looked very good, especially on defense, where they shut-down visiting Mount Vernon Christian for a seven-minute stretch in the second quarter.

But then, at other times, the Wolves looked tentative, and, unfortunately, one of those times came during the game’s closing minutes.

Losing the grip on a lead it had held for two-plus quarters, Coupeville went cold from the field down the stretch, watching as a 26-26 tie turned into a 35-29 loss.

The non-conference defeat drops the Wolves to 0-3 heading into a game Saturday with Flinders Christian, an Australian traveling team.

That game, which will be played at South Whidbey High School, tips at 11 AM.

Coupeville, which had held the lead from the first moments of the second quarter, finally fell behind, briefly, with seven minutes left in the game.

The Wolves responded strongly, though, getting a free throw from Mikayla Elfrank and a bucket from Lindsey Roberts to knot the game at 26.

The game-tying layup came courtesy sophomore guard Scout Smith, who retrieved a loose ball and pegged a sizzling pass that dropped onto Roberts fingertips in mid-stride.

It brought the crowd to its collective feet, led the MVC coach to call a timeout, and seemed to signal the start of a strong finale for Coupeville.

It wasn’t to be, though, as the Hurricanes hit on back-to-back three-point plays to bust the game open.

The first came on a lurching layup and ensuing free throw, courtesy of a ticky-tack foul call, while the second was an admittedly pretty dang impressive three-ball.

MVC had shooters willing to air the ball out, and they won the battle from behind the arc 15-0, thanks to five three-pointers that splashed home.

The first was a gut-wrencher, with the ball hitting the bottom of the net with 0:00.1 of a second left on the clock in the first quarter.

Coupeville refused to bend a knee in the game’s final moments, though, as Ema Smith and Kalia Littlejohn came hard after Hurricane ball-handlers as the game clock ticked down.

Ema Smith, making her season debut, had a particularly strong series of plays in the final 45 seconds, twice forcing jump balls before knocking down a long jumper that was a half-step away from being a three-ball of its own.

While that shot was a dagger, her teammate, Sarah Wright, had the most entertaining basket of the night.

The Wolf junior stopped and popped a shot early in the second quarter which bounced around, hitting every single side of the rim multiple times.

All 10 players eventually stood and watched as the ball bounced, bucked, popped and then, after an eternity, splashed through, giving Wright an opportunity to justifiably fist-pump as she back-pedaled.

While the Wolves didn’t get a break-out scoring performance, they did share the work, with Elfrank topping the charts with nine points and 11 rebounds.

Roberts and Littlejohn knocked down five points apiece, while Ema Smith (4), Wright (4) and Kyla Briscoe (2) rounded out the attack.
