“All of high school this team has been a place for me to go to, to feel loved and accepted.”

Abbigail Bond was speaking for herself, but it’s a sentiment shared by the other four seniors on the Coupeville High School cheer squad.

“I love you all so much, and I wouldn’t be here without you,” added Miles Gerber, while Avery Williams-Buchanan offered “I have felt incredibly supported by my whole team, family and friends.”

One team, one dream — a loud ‘n proud squad keeping spirits flying high in Wolf Nation.

The rain didn’t dampen their spirit.

Despite Mother Nature dumping cold rain on Saturday’s Coupeville High School football game, Wolf Spirit Team members and their Junior Cheer counterparts stayed loud ‘n proud.

The photos above and below capture two generations of Cow Town cheerleaders in action, showcasing current CHS students passing on their love of the sport to those who will follow in their footsteps.

They are tantalizingly close to a breakthrough.

While the Coupeville High School girls’ tennis team is 0-5 this season, the Wolves have been one match away from winning as a team almost every time out.

Friday was a similar tale, with CHS sweeping the singles showdowns at South Whidbey, but being narrowly edged in the doubles bouts and falling 3-2.

One of those doubles matches went the full three sets, as well, with the Falcons, a traditional tennis power in the region, escaping by the slimmest of advantages.

“We did so great!” said Coupeville coach Starla Seal.

Tenley (Stuurmans) did amazing and held her composure, Dahlia (Miller) also, and really both of them came back their second set to shut it down.

Kauri (Hamilton) and Brynn (Parker) were so close to winning (at second doubles).”

With dry weather predicted for the week ahead, the Wolves will host a pair of matches on their home courts.

King’s comes to Coupeville Tuesday, April 15 for a non-conference rumble, before Friday Harbor visits April 18 for the second of four showdowns between Northwest 2B/1B League rivals this season.

Friday’s results:

Varsity:

1st Singles — Tenley Stuurmans won 6-4, 6-2

2nd Singles — Dahlia Miller won 7-5, 6-2

1st Doubles — Ember Light/Mila Light lost 6-1, 6-1

2nd Doubles — Brynn Parker/Kauri Hamilton lost 2-6, 6-4, 6-2

3rd Doubles — Delanie Lewis/Ember Light lost 4-0, 4-0

JV:

4th Doubles — Chloe Ferguson/Rowan Stoner lost 4-0, 4-0

5th Doubles — Samantha Wallace/Hailey Goldman lost 4-0, 4-1

Senior Kassidy Upchurch is the captain for CHS cheer’s fall season. (Jackie Saia photos)

“I think it is safe to say that the Pack is Back!!!”

As a new school year approaches, Coupeville High School cheer coach Jenne Morrell is sky high as she surveys her roster.

In four years, she’s built the program from eight athletes to 22 who plan to work the sidelines at Wolf football games this fall.

Under Morrell’s leadership, Coupeville cheerleaders comprise a competition squad as well, with that core group aiming for a return to the state championships.

Balancing sideline work with mat work takes deep commitment, something the Wolves embrace. And it all begins with family, said their coach.

“Our team’s strengths are that we work really hard to foster a sense of family on our squad,” Morrell said.

“They did an amazing job polishing their leadership skills at UCA camp this summer and spent nearly 300 hours volunteering in their community.

“The squad does an amazing job of supporting each other in all areas and creates lifelong friendships.”

Pamela Morrell, like her mom, is a cheer lifer.

Morrell and her assistants, Tara Crouch and Anthony Ford, provide the structure, but it’s the cheerleaders themselves who often are front and center.

Having a strong core of veterans helps.

“Our seniors are really stepping up and sharing their leadership, knowledge, and skills as they work with our incoming freshmen,” Morrell said.

“One of the most inspiring things that has happened over the last few years is seeing students from every social group work together closely to accomplish their goals.”

The CHS cheerleaders, from well-seasoned seniors to freshmen making their debut, will also get a chance to work with the next generation.

Coupeville’s Junior Cheer performance is set for Oct. 11, when the Wolves host South Whidbey in The Bucket Game, and the current cheerleaders will be hard at work preparing their younger counterparts.

It’ll be a busy season all around, but one that Morrell and her squad are ready to start.

“We will be working on adding complexity and more challenging stunt sequences to our performances,” Morrell said.

“We hope to see continued growth of our program and our individual skills as we tackle this fall season.

“We would love to get the student section more involved at games to fill the stands with Wolfpack spirit and on the competition side, we’re looking to qualify for state and bring home some new hardware for our trophy case!”
