Pick your (Porter) poison.

Powered by 28 points from the twin titans, Jack and Johnny, plus another 21 from their brother from another mother, Camden Glover, the Coupeville High School JV boys’ basketball team scorched another foe Friday night.

The deer in the headlights this time was visiting Mount Vernon Christian, which fell, and fell hard, to the rampaging Wolves.

Starting hot, and closing hotter, Coupeville ran away with a 65-47 win, stretching their record to 5-0 in Northwest 2B/1B League play, 10-2 overall.

The only thing which can slow down the Wolf JV is the schedule maker, as neither of Coupeville’s next two varsity opponents bring a second squad to Cow Town with them.

That means the JV is off until South Whidbey arrives at the CHS gym Jan. 24.

While they wait for someone, anyone, to try and stand up to them, the Wolf young guns can bask in another stellar performance.

CHS jumped out to a 17-12 lead after one quarter of play, with Glover thumping down low for seven points, and both Porter boys banking in four.

From there, the Wolves kept the lead intact, heading into the locker room up 29-24, then holding on to a 43-40 advantage entering the fourth quarter.

With Glover back on the floor and pouring in points after battling foul trouble in the mid section of the game, Coupeville closed on a 22-7 tear.

Hitting from all angles, with Glover, Jack Porter, and Malachi Somes knocking down three-balls from deep, the Wolves spread out the offensive love.

Glover led the way with 21, while Johnny Porter tickled the twines for 16 while playing strongly at both ends of the floor.

Johnny had his best game this year,” said CHS coach Jon Roberts. “Consistently there in the post and cleaning up garbage.

“I wish I knew his assist numbers. He fed Cam all night.”

Jack Porter gave Coupeville a third player in double digits, kissing the glass for 12 points, while Somes (6), Riley Lawless (4), Landon Roberts (3), Aiden O’Neill (2), and Davin Houston (1) joined the offensive attack.

Easton Green and Makai Myles also saw floor time for the Wolves.

The young guns are ahead of the curve.

Six of the 11 players on the Coupeville High School JV girls’ basketball team are just 8th graders, pulling double duty.

Starting Monday those scrappers will join their fellow middle schoolers for the CMS season, while still playing out the rest of this campaign with the high school squad.

It’s a baptism of fire, and Kassie O’Neil’s youngest players are holding up well.

“They’re playing really good right now,” said the CHS hardwood guru. “Love to see it.”

Those 8th graders accounted for half the points Friday during a 56-29 loss to a much-more experienced Mount Vernon Christian squad.

While the home defeat drops the Wolves to 0-3 in Northwest 2B/1B League play, 3-6 overall, learning under fire is invaluable for the growth of Coupeville’s future stars.

One of the precocious group, Tenley Stuurmans, paced Coupeville Friday, popping for a team-high nine points.

The latest in a string of strong hoops players to emerge from her clan, Lyla’s lil’ sis banked in four of those points in the opening quarter as CHS hung tough, trailing 19-10 at the first break.

MVC steadily pushed the lead out from there, to 29-17 at the half and 47-21 after three quarters of play, but the Wolves stayed scrappy to the end.

With 8th grader Adie Maynes going off for all five of her points in the final frame, while Stuurmans added another three, Coupeville fought until the final buzzer sounded.

Five Wolves recorded points in the clash, with Stuurmans (9), Brynn Parker (7), Maynes (5), Bryley Gilbert (4), and Haylee Armstrong (4) all putting their name into the scoring column.

Taylor Marrs, Chelsi Stevens, Ari Cunningham, Lexis Drake, Ava Lucero, and Capri Anter also saw floor time for the Wolves, who return to action with a home game Jan. 23 against league rival Concrete.

Rivals on the court, partners off the floor.

Depending on how fast the snow melts, Coupeville High School basketball is primed to welcome Mount Vernon Christian to town Friday for big Northwest 2B/1B League showdown games.

While the Wolves and Hurricanes will clash on the hardwood, they are uniting to raise money for the fight against cancer.

Those dollar bills will go to the Jimmy V Foundation, which honors late college basketball coach Jimmy Valvano, who waged a furious fight with the disease.

The two schools are uniting to wear shirts which reflect the night’s message, as reflected in the photo above.

There will also be a large poster in the CHS gym hallway on which people can write messages of support for those fighting all the forms of cancer.

Turn up the intensity.

After a somewhat slow week in which Coupeville High School basketball teams played just once, the next six days are about to get very busy.

The Wolf boys head to Granite Falls Tuesday, while the CHS girls host Orcas Island Wednesday in a non-conference game against a league rival.

After that comes a dual trip to Friday Harbor on Friday, with those games being the first official league contests of the season.

Things wrap Saturday with a home doubleheader against next-door neighbor South Whidbey, with the Wolf girls celebrating the 50th anniversary of the program at halftime of their game.

As we head into the busy season, a look at where things sit through Dec. 10:

They got the solo spotlight, in a driving rainstorm.

Playing through more than their fair share of liquid sunshine Monday, the Coupeville High School JV soccer players put up a good fight against always-tough Mount Vernon Christian.

While the Wolves ultimately fell 3-0 on a soggy afternoon in Skagit County, CHS coaches came away pleased with the effort put forth by their young players.

“We played well, connected, and penetrated often, but pace of balls and runners were off,” Robert Wood said.

“Good effort by everyone. Very nice to get a full game for them.”

Sage Arends shows off some fancy footwork.

The loss drops Coupeville’s JV, which is a co-ed team playing in a boys’ soccer league, to 0-3-1 on the season.

Getting a chance for the young guns to play a complete game, especially on a day when they were the sole focus, pleased everyone.

Of course, next time out Wood and fellow coach Kimberly Kisch would appreciate a break from the weather.

“I hope the next one is NOT in a torrential downpour like this one,” Wood said with a chuckle while drying out.
