A dead-eye shooter in his younger days, Alex Evans has morphed into an enterprising coach.

Now the former Wolf ace, who played three sports during his Coupeville High School days, is looping back around to spread more wisdom to the current generation of hoops stars.

Evans, who most recently was an assistant coach for the CHS girls’ basketball program, will be in the thick of things when the middle school boys take control of the gym Monday afternoon.

He was one of three new hires announced Friday by Athletic Director Willie Smith, with CHS grad Jaylen Nitta and newcomer RayLynn Ratcliff also tabbed.

The trio replace Craig Anderson and Jon Roberts, who are moving up to coach the high school JV boys.

The hires are official when approved by the Coupeville School Board.

The CMS boys play an eight-game schedule between Nov. 14 and Dec. 13.

The dynamic duo is movin’ on up.

Coupeville grads turned coaches Craig Anderson and Jon Roberts will jump from the middle school to the high school this fall, replacing Hunter Smith as boys’ basketball JV coach.

The hires are 100% official when approved by the school board.

Smith departed after last season, capping a three-year run as JV coach.

Fire academy, a move off of Whidbey Island, and marriage to fellow CHS Athlete of the Year winner Payton Aparicio conspired to reduce Brad Sherman’s coaching staff.

The “new guys” are hardly new, since both have long-established roots both in Coupeville and with the Wolf basketball program.

Both Anderson and Roberts played high school hoops at CHS back in the day, and their sons Chase and Landon, respectively, currently suit up for the Wolves.

The duo coached successful middle school basketball teams, while Roberts is also the current high school JV baseball coach.

In their day jobs, Anderson is a Captain with the Oak Harbor Fire Department and Roberts owns Cascade Custom Homes and Design.

New coaches as far as the eye can see.

While it’s been almost a full year since a Coupeville High School or Middle School team has competed during the Age of Coronavirus, behind-the-scenes preparations continue.

CHS/CMS Athletic Director Willie Smith has five new coaches lined up, but the actual hires are waiting on two things — a return to play, and the approval of the school board.

Topping the list is Elizabeth Bitting, who is moving from coaching middle school track to running the high school program. At least for a year.

“With no middle school athletics at this point, other than a possible track season, Elizabeth agreed to do the high school cross country team this year,” Smith said.

“We’ll evaluate at the end of the year what level she will coach next year.”

The extremely-popular Bitting, who worked with runners from both schools during the open coaching period, replaces Luke Samford, who moved out of state.

Other new coaches waiting to officially start their duties include Will Thayer, Robert Wood, Cris Matochi, and Ashley Menges.

Thayer, who was originally hired to coach JV softball last spring, only to see COVID cancel the season before it began, replaces Chris Smith as CHS head baseball coach.

Smith moved off-Island after the graduation of his youngest child.

Wood, who previously worked as an assistant coach, steps into the lead role with the CHS boys soccer program.

Kyle Nelson previously coached both boys and girls soccer, but with Coupeville’s move from 1A to 2B, both teams now play in the same season, and he chose to step away from one program.

Matochi will coach middle school volleyball, while Menges, whose unofficial hire had been previously announced, follows Chris Smith as the JV volleyball coach for the CHS spiker program.

With the proposed hirings, the lone position still open on the school district’s web site is for a CHS boys basketball JV coach — which was also previously filled by Chris Smith.

Like mother, like son.

Former Coupeville High School basketball star Dante Mitchell is following in the coaching footsteps of mom Avis, and his first job as a head coach will come at his former stomping grounds.

Mitchell, who graduated alongside twin brother DeAndre in 2016, has been tabbed as the new 8th grade boys basketball coach for Coupeville Middle School.

He joins veteran whistle-blower Bob Martin, who will run the 7th grade program this fall.

The job opening came because longtime round-ball sage Randy King is taking a break from the bench while preparing for hip surgery.

Mitchell’s hiring, announced by CHS/CMS Athletic Director Willie Smith, needs final, official approval from the school board.

That would come at their next meeting Nov. 27.

CMS boys hoops kicks off a new season with the first day of practice Monday, Nov. 6.

The Wolves play a 10-game season, with their first battle a road game at Sequim Nov. 30. Mitchell’s home debut as a head coach is Dec. 4.

After wrapping his high school basketball playing career with the 2015-2016 season, Mitchell was an assistant coach on Anthony Smith’s staff during the 2016-2017 campaign.

Former Coupeville boys JV hoops coach Dustin Van Velkinburgh worked with Mitchell for several seasons.

Dante will bring some young energy, that will hold his kids accountable,” Van Velkinburgh said. “During his time as a player, I appreciated how hard he worked and his willingness to do the little things to help his team win.

“And he’s never been one to shy away from hard work.”

Sarah Lyngra (top) and Kimberly Bepler are returning to coach where they once played.

Lyngra (35), back when she was peppering spikes as Sarah Powell.

Before she was a Bepler, #8 was a hard-hitting Stuurmans.

The wave of former Wolves returning to coach at their alma mater continues.

Kimberly Bepler and Sarah Lyngra have been tabbed to co-coach the Coupeville Middle School 7th grade volleyball squad, which starts practice Wednesday.

They replace Alexandra Goheen, who resigned this summer, and will work alongside Casie Dunleavy, who returns as the CMS 8th grade coach.

Official approval of their hires would come at the next school board meeting.

The duo, both star athletes during their younger days (when they went by their maiden names of Stuurmans and Powell, respectively), join an impressive roster of Wolf players turned coaches.

That list currently includes Brad Sherman, Jerry Helm, Megan Smith, Larry Hurlburt, Emily (Norris) Stevens, Amanda (Streubel) Jones and Jordan Ford.

Lyngra graduated from CHS in 1987, while Bepler is part of the Class of ’91.

Both played multiple sports during their time as Wolves, and their children are following in their footsteps.

Ariah Bepler, a senior, is adding football this year to basketball and track.

He matched dad Mark by qualifying for the state track meet last year.

Lyngra’s son, Nikolai, played basketball as a freshman last season, though he has a ways to go to catch his mom, who sits as the 20th best scorer all-time in the history of CHS girls basketball.
