The postseason is off to a roaring start.

Kicking off the final three meets of the season, the Coupeville High School track and field team put on an impressive show Wednesday at the Northwest 2B/1B League Championships.

Competing in La Conner, the Wolves racked up 13 wins and 25 PRs, with the boys romping to a team title.

Led by senior Carson Field, who swept to titles in the 800, 1600, and 3200, Coupeville’s male athletes piled up 208 points.

That put them way ahead of runner-up Mount Vernon Christian, which finished with an even 100.

Orcas Island (80), La Conner (71), Friday Harbor (53), and Concrete (11) rounded out the field.

On the girl’s side of things, MVC (211) held off La Conner (135) and Coupeville (100), with Friday Harbor (65), Orcas Island (24), and Concrete (9) bringing up the rear.

The stellar team-wide performance brought a smile to the faces of Wolf coaches Bob Martin and Elizabeth Bitting on a wild ‘n woolly day.

“They made a statement!” the coaches said.

“Throw in some wind, a couple of flying canopies, a bit of blood, and unwavering grit – Coupeville tough, through and through.”

The next hurdle for the Wolves is the District 1 meet May 17, which they host.

After that is the state meet May 29-31 in Yakima for those who qualify.

Seniors celebrated, victory claimed

The weather was cloudy, but the atmosphere was sunny.

Coupeville High School girls’ tennis hailed its veterans on Senior Night Wednesday, then went out and bounced visiting Friday Harbor off the court.

The Wolves celebrated 12th graders Delanie Lewis and Ember Light, with the former teaming up with young gun Brynn Parker to seal the deal in a 3-2 victory for CHS in Northwest 2B/1B League action.

CHS finishes 2-9-1 this season, but that record is deceptive.

The Wolves increased their roster size from a year ago, debuted their new home courts, showed great growth, and were highly competitive, with all of their losses coming by razor-thin 3-2 scores.

As it has all season, Coupeville swept both singles matches Wednesday, while this time out also breaking through in a doubles bout.

The match brought an end to the regular season for the Wolves, but the postseason beckons.

Coupeville will travel to Seattle May 15, taking two singles players and two doubles teams to compete in the District 1/2 tourney at the Amy Yee Tennis Center.

Things will be intense there, as the two districts only get to send one singles player and one doubles team on to the state tourney this year.

Which means you win a bi-district crown and you’re off to Yakima. Don’t, and you’re not.

Next spring, a different district loses a slot, and two singles players and two doubles teams will once again advance from the District 1/2 tourney to state.

Hurricanes nip Wolves in diamond rumble

One team is playing for a league title, the other for a strong finish to a challenging season.

Mount Vernon Christian and Coupeville High School’s baseball squads are trending in opposite direction this season, with the Hurricanes soaring and the Wolves rebuilding.

But Tuesday’s tilt was still a fairly close one, with MVC eventually slipping away for a 5-0 win on the mainland.

The loss drops Coupeville to 5-6 in Northwest 2B/1B League play (the ‘Canes are 10-1), and 6-12 overall heading into what will be their season finale Thursday afternoon.

Having been eliminated from playoff contention, the Wolves will wrap things up with a Senior Night game — honoring Landon Roberts and Jesus Madrigal — with the first pitch set for 4:00 PM.

The Wolves can also throw a wrinkle into the chase for a league title if they upend MVC Thursday, with the private school diamond men clinging to a one-game lead over Friday Harbor (9-2) in the battle for a banner.

Tuesday’s rumble was a pitcher’s duel, with Wolf junior Camden Glover whiffing eight and walking just a single batter.

But the Wolves failed to generate much heat of their own on the offensive side of the ball, limited to two base knocks and a walk.

Mount Vernon starting pitcher Carson Wilms retired the first 11 batters he faced, with Glover finally breaking through with a two-out single in the top of the fourth.

Other than that, the Wolves only burst of activity at the plate came in the sixth, when Chris Zenz walked and Landon Roberts poked a single.

But, with two runners aboard, Coupeville left them stranded, ending the frame on a strikeout and flyout.

The Hurricanes netted the only two runs they would need in the bottom of the first, then added two more tallies in the third and a final one in the sixth.

Spring teams enter stretch run

Bring out the roses.

With the last week of the regular season upon us, the coming days will feature Senior Night festivities for three of four Coupeville High School spring sports teams.

Wolf girls’ tennis celebrates Wednesday as it hosts Friday Harbor.

That’ll be the second and final match of the week for the netters, who kick things off by traveling Monday to Granite Falls.

Meanwhile, the CHS softball squad caps its regular season run at home Tuesday with a rumble against Granite Falls as well.

For Wolf baseball, the final series features a road trip to Mount Vernon Christian Tuesday, followed by Senior Night at home Thursday afternoon.

And while CHS track and field has already honored its seniors, the team stays busy, competing at the Northwest 2B/1B League Championships Wednesday in La Conner.

Diamond queens complete undefeated league run

One box checked, more to go.

Crushing host Orcas Island 21-6 Thursday, the Coupeville High School softball squad completed an undefeated run through Northwest 2B/1B League play.

The win lifts the Wolves to 10-0 in conference action, 15-1 overall, with two non-league games left on the regular season schedule.

Up first is a short trip to Langley Friday to face South Whidbey, before Granite Falls comes to Coupeville May 6 as Aaron Lucero’s team celebrates Senior Night.

After that, the postseason beckons, with the Wolves dreaming of state tourney glory.

At every step of the way this season Coupeville’s diamond queens have taken care of business, and Thursday was no different.

The Wolves started a little slow offensively but poured it on with a blistering attack in a 12-run third inning to once again put their stamp on things.

Teagan Calkins cranked a triple to kick-start the explosion, with Haylee Armstrong and Jada Heaton delivering two-run base knocks to keep things hopping.

For Heaton, back in the lineup after a game off, it was a dangerous day, as the senior sparkplug got nailed by wayward pitches four times.

She got three walks out of her embrace of pain, as she was hit twice during one at-bat, with the ump waving off the first plunk, but awarding her the bag for the second potential bruise.

Whether they got on base via hits (nine of them), walks (13), or errors (a handful of Orcas mistakes), the Wolves continued to push runners across the plate.

None stamped quite so hard as they scored as Mia Farris, who walloped “a monster home run” to end things.

While offense was the key, Coupeville also delivered once again from the pitcher’s circle, with Adeline Maynes (8) and Armstrong (1) combining to pile up strikeouts.
