The season isn’t done, but any playoff hopes are gone.

The Coupeville High School varsity softball squad made some outstanding defensive plays Thursday but stranded 13 runners and fell 3-2 in eight innings to host Friday Harbor.

The Wolf sluggers, who went undefeated in their first two years back in the Northwest 2B/1B League, finish 10-2 in conference action this time around, and are 13-6 overall with a May 12 non-league tilt at South Whidbey left on the schedule.

Friday Harbor, which is 11-1 in league, 14-4 overall, won two of three against the Wolves and earns a league title and District 1’s lone playoff berth for 2B schools.

The difference between Coupeville and their closest rival was razor-thin this season, with both losses being one-run affairs on the road.

Friday Harbor won 13-12 back in March, in a game where CHS was up 6-0 early.

Then the Wolves bounced back, thrashing the Wolverines 8-1 in mid-April in a game played on Whidbey Island.

That set up Thursday’s league finale, which carried simple, but massive stakes.

And both teams met the moment, for the most part, alternating big-time plays as the pressure grew.

Coupeville struck first, pushing a run across in both the first and second innings, while Friday Harbor responded with two tallies in the bottom of the third to knot things back up.

Mia Farris, who walked, then went to second on a Taylor Brotemarkle single, nimbly dashed home on a wild pitch to stake CHS to a 1-0 lead.

Haylee Armstrong is locked and loaded.

The second run of the afternoon came courtesy of a couple of big hits from the bottom of the order, with 8th grader Haylee Armstrong lashing a leadoff triple to right-center in the top of the second.

Sailing into third without any hesitation, the middle school masher then came home two batters later when sophomore Jada Heaton hammered an RBI single into the gap.

Unfortunately for the Wolves, that would be the final run they scored, despite putting runners aboard in every inning.

CHS had Friday Harbor hurler Natalie Morton on the ropes, racking up six hits and 10 walks, but couldn’t land the knockout punch.

The Wolves stranded two runners in each of the first four innings, and left the bases loaded in the top of the seventh.

“We just couldn’t seem to string hits together tonight,” said Coupeville coach Kevin McGranahan.

Part of the problem was Friday Harbor playing spotless defense, seemingly gobbling up every liner or pop fly, and making every throw.

Coupeville countered with its own defensive gems, however, as the teams played four straight scoreless innings to send the game into extra frames.

Freshman catcher Teagan Calkins, playing through an injury suffered in her team’s last game, came up huge, gunning down a would-be base stealer at third base.

Her bullet, which slapped into Gwen Gustafson’s glove a millisecond before the incoming runner, was followed by Brotemarkle diving to rob Friday Harbor on a soft liner headed for paydirt.

Best buds Farris and Heaton also came up with huge catches in the outfield late in the game, running down balls which had extra-bases written all over them.

Mia Farris is a defensive dynamo, and a fashion icon.

Jada had the game of her life,” McGranahan said. “Going back and snagging a long fly, and then catching a short fly to right and diving forward to catch one, and two hits with an RBI.”

Not to be outdone, Brotemarkle also snagged a hot shot on the ground while on the move, then spun and flipped the ball to Maya Lucero to beat an incoming runner.

But as strongly as both teams played on defense, even with the wind whistling past the phone livestreaming the game, a few balls were bound to find a place to drop back to Earth just out of reach.

Leading off the bottom of the eighth, Friday Harbor’s Audrey Allen bashed a ball which sliced between two defenders flying hard from opposite sides, then skipped away towards the fence.

It turned into a triple, and two walks — one intentional to avoid the Wolverines cleanup hitter — loaded the bases with no room for error.

CHS pitcher Allie Lucero whiffed a hitter to get her squad a third of the way to keeping the game alive, but a hard-hit grounder from the next batter was the difference maker.

The Wolves had a play at the plate, but the throw came in low and the runner came in hot, ending the game on a positive note for Friday Harbor.

Thursday stats:

Haylee Armstrong — One triple
Taylor Brotemarkle — Two singles, one walk
Mia Farris — Two walks
Gwen Gustafson — One walk
Jada Heaton — Two singles
Allie Lucero — Three walks
Maya Lucero — One single

Hear the Wolves howl.

Coupeville High School track and field lit up Jack Whitaker Field in La Conner Wednesday, throwing down a dominant performance at the Northwest 2B/1B League Championships.

Boasting a deep roster, the Wolf boys cruised to a team title, doubling up their closest rival, while the CHS girls narrowly finished second to powerhouse Mount Vernon Christian.

Coupeville’s male athletes captured nine wins en route to rolling up 155 points.

La Conner (77), MVC (62), Friday Harbor (37), and Orcas Island (23) rounded out the team scoring.

Among the girls, the battle was much closer, with MVC holding off CHS 154.5-129.5.

Friday Harbor (36), La Conner (31), and Orcas (20) were way, way back of the titanic twosome.

Coupeville’s girls brought home eight titles of their own, with the Wolves claiming the top spot on the podium in 17 of the day’s 35 events.

Wolf senior Aidan Wilson led the way, earning top honors in the 400, 800, and triple jump, while sophomore Lyla Stuurmans (400, 800) and senior Mitchell Hall (1600, 3200) were double winners.

CHS female stars notching wins included Monroe Myles (100), Claire Mayne (100 Hurdles), Carolyn Lhamon (Shot Put), Katie Marti (Javelin), and Ryanne Knoblich (High Jump).

Zac Tackett (Discus), Nick Guay (High Jump), and Nehemiah Myles (Long Jump) are also league champs, as are the girls 4 x 400 relay squad and the boys 4 x 100 unit.

“They all ran, jumped, threw beautifully!” said Coupeville coach Elizabeth Bitting. “It was a good day!!!!!!!”

Next up for the Wolves is the district meet Saturday, May 13, which they will host.

That event, which is the direct lead-in to the state meet, kicks off at 11:00 AM at Coupeville’s Mickey Clark Field.

Djina Radenovic and Co. play for a league title this coming week. (Jackie Saia photo)

The calendar turns and things get serious.

The arrival of May marks the start of the stretch run for Coupeville High School spring sports teams, with league titles and possible postseason glory at stake.

Wolf softball, baseball, and girls’ tennis all sit atop the Northwest 2B/1B League standings, while track and field has been dominant, especially on the boy’s side.

The CHS netters, who have clinched at least a tie for the conference crown, can claim sole possession with a win Tuesday at Friday Harbor.

Miss there, and they’ll get another crack May 12, when the Wolverines travel to Whidbey for Coupeville’s Senior Night.

Wolf softball only plays once in the week ahead, but everything hinges on the outcome.

The sluggers travel to Friday Harbor Thursday, and the stakes are simple.

Win, and the Wolves clinch a playoff berth. Lose, and a May 12 non-conference road game at South Whidbey is the season finale.

CHS baseball was supposed to play twice, but non-league rival Sultan bailed on a Monday trip to Whidbey, so the hardball squad will wait until Thursday, joining softball for its island-to-island trek.

Win, lose, or draw, the diamond squad has clinched the #1 seed for the District 1/2 tourney for 2B schools, where they’ll need one victory May 13 to punch a ticket to state.

What is at stake this coming week is the NWL title.

Coupeville is a half-game up on 1B Mount Vernon Christian, with the teams having split their two-game season series.

MVC has games left Tuesday with Concrete and Thursday with Orcas Island as the Hurricanes angle to stay even with the Wolves.

While the first three sports are nearing the end of the regular season, track is the first to step into the postseason, with a trip Wednesday to La Conner for the league championships.

That starts a three-meet run for glory, with districts and state up next.

As we head into a (possibly) dramatic week, a look at current standings for teams which tally wins and losses:

Northwest League baseball:

School League Overall
Coupeville 12-1 14-4
MV Christian 11-1 12-3
Friday Harbor 7-5 7-7
Orcas Island 6-7 9-7
Darrington 5-8 6-8
La Conner 3-10 4-12
Concrete 0-12 0-12

Northwest League girls tennis:

School League Overall
Coupeville 2-0 2-4
Friday Harbor 0-2 0-3

Northwest League softball:

School League Overall
Coupeville 10-1 13-5
Friday Harbor 8-1 11-4
Darrington 5-4 6-5
Orcas Island 5-5 5-9
La Conner 2-8 2-14
Concrete 0-11 0-13

They never flinched.

Locked in a low-scoring rumble for a bit Thursday in Darrington, the Coupeville High School varsity softball squad could have panicked when the host Loggers cut their deficit to a single run.

Instead, the Wolves ripped off seven unanswered runs, threw down back-to-back scoreless innings on defense, and rolled to their ninth win in their last 10 games.

Eventually exiting with an 11-5 win, Coupeville gets to 9-1 in Northwest 2B/1B League play, 12-5 overall.

Now the Wolves head home for Senior Night Saturday — played at 1:00 PM in the afternoon — then close the season on the road.

After facing off Saturday with La Conner (2-7, 2-13), CHS travels to Friday Harbor (7-1, 10-4) Thursday, May 4, before playing a non-conference game May 12 at South Whidbey.

The Friday Harbor clash will determine the NWL champs, and which team earns District 1’s lone playoff berth for 2B schools.

Thursday’s rumble with 1B Darrington, while having no effect on playoff positioning for the Wolves, was still a solid test for Kevin McGranahan’s squad.

“We had to earn this one today; took us awhile to get the bats going,” Coupeville’s coach said.

“The girls stayed the course, and eventually we got some clutch hits to plate some runs and pull away enough to get the W.”

The Loggers, who sit in third place in the conference, hung tough, trailing just 4-3 after four innings.

Both teams went down 1-2-3 in the first, with Wolf hurler Allie Lucero striking out the side, before Coupeville pushed three runners across in the top of the second.

Walks to Madison McMillan and Allie Lucero primed the well, with Maya Lucero crunching a two-run double to left to get the scoreboard operator working.

Melanie Navarro laced an RBI single over the shortstop’s head to make it 3-0 — one of three times the senior slugger reached base — before Darrington escaped.

The Loggers scraped together their own run in the bottom half of the inning, capitalizing on a bunt which burrowed deep into the dirt in fair territory, but CHS immediately matched the score.

Taylor Brotemarkle singled, went to second on an error, coasted into third on a wild pitch, then tapped home on a hard-hit grounder off the bat of the always-mashin’ McMillan.

Navarro doubled to center in the fourth, only to be stranded, while Darrington scored twice during their at-bats– without getting the ball out of the infield — and suddenly it was a nail-biter at 4-3.

But, no fear, no blinking, just going out and executing for the Wolves.

Fab frosh Teagan Calkins used a bit of alert base running to score in the fifth, before CHS tacked on two runs in the sixth and four more in the seventh to stretch the lead back out to 11-3.

Super sophomores Jada Heaton and Mia Farris both picked up two RBI’s during the surge, with Calkins coming back around to swat a two-run single past Darrington’s diving shortstop.

As important as the runs were, Coupeville’s pitching and defense also came up big in the moment, blanking the Loggers in the fifth and sixth.

Allie Lucero, who finished with 11 strikeouts, set down five consecutive Darrington hitters, while McMillan ended the sixth by tracking down a wayward pop fly over second base.

While the Loggers made one final push, scoring two runs in the bottom of the seventh, Calkins ended things.

Jumping out from behind home plate, she plucked a spinning ball off the dirt and fired it to Maya Lucero at first for out #21, sending her team home carrying yet another victory.

Thursday stats:

Taylor Brotemarkle — Two singles
Teagan Calkins
— Two singles
Mia Farris
— One double, one walk
Jada Heaton
— One single
Allie Lucero
— One walk
Maya Lucero
— One double, two walks

— One single, one double, one walk

Scott Hilborn whacked four hits Thursday afternoon. (Morgan White photo)

They might want to build a storm shelter in Darrington.

Why?

To protect the locals from the kind of missiles being rained down Thursday afternoon.

The red-hot ‘n rollin’ Coupeville High School varsity baseball squad was in town and smashed 19 hits on its way to a 16-6 win before departing town in a blaze of glory.

Twelve different Wolves collected a base knock during the decimation, even with the game mercy-ruled after five innings, as CHS won for the ninth time in its last 10 tilts.

Now 11-1 in Northwest 2B/1B League play, 13-4 overall, Coupeville heads home for Senior Night Saturday, when it hosts La Conner (3-9, 4-11).

First pitch is 1:00 PM.

With three regular season games left, and two of those conference clashes, the Wolves have clinched the #1 seed for the District 1/2 tournament, and are tied with Mount Vernon Christian (11-1, 12-3) atop the NWL.

Facing off with a decent Darrington squad — the Loggers are a solid .500 team — CHS abused its hosts all afternoon.

The Wolves pushed four runs across in the top of the first, added a single tally in the second, then broke the game wide-open by slapping eight runs on the board in the third.

Three more visitors tapped home plate in the top of the fourth, stretching the lead all the way out to 16-1.

While the Loggers chipped away at the lead late, it came only after Coupeville coach Steve Hilborn cleared his bench.

The Wolves used two of their three freshman hurlers, with starter Coop Cooper whiffing six in three innings of work, while Camden Glover followed with two punch-outs across two frames.

Freshman catcher Chase Anderson threw out a pair of would-be base stealers, keeping Darrington honest, while the Wolves strung together hit after hit while at the plate.

Five of the knocks went for extra bases, with senior slugger Scott Hilborn leading the way with two doubles and a bombastic triple.

Young gun Glover and grizzled vet Jonathan Valenzuela each added a two-bagger, with every Wolf starter, and three back-ups, collecting hits.

Thursday stats:

Chase Anderson — Two singles
Peyton Caveness — One single, one walk
Coop Cooper — Two singles, one walk
Jaje Drake — One single, one walk
Camden Glover — One double, one walk
Scott Hilborn — One single, two doubles, one triple, one walk
Aiden O’Neill — One single
Jack Porter — Two singles
Johnny Porter — One single
Landon Roberts — One single
Jonathan Valenzuela — One single, one double
Cole White — One single
