Some days the soccer gods are especially cruel.

For the Coupeville High School boys pitch squad, Tuesday was one of those days.

Playing with a short roster, the Wolves scrapped and fought with host La Conner, taking a scoreless game into overtime, only to be punched in the heart by a ref’s interpretation of the rule book.

Was it the right call? Possibly.

But it still hurts, and still helped send the Wolves to a 1-0 loss in a league contest.

With the narrow defeat, Coupeville slips to 1-2 in Northwest 2B/1B League play, with its next two games at home.

Those contests, set for Sept. 23 and 27, come against two of the most-dangerous teams in the region, however, with Friday Harbor and Orcas Island up next on the schedule.

The latter of those teams is the defending 2B/1B state champ, while the former claimed 4th place at last year’s big dance.

Tuesday’s torrid tilt at La Conner’s Jack Whittaker Field came down to a penalty kick in the first extra period.

The Braves were awarded the one-on-one shot after the ref determined Coupeville’s goaltender had “interfered” with La Conner’s shooter, inadvertently or not.

“Controversial call indeed,” said CHS coach Robert Wood.

“The keeper got the foul on a 50/50 ball with their attacker, where only if you are well-versed in the laws of the game will you understand the call.”

While he would have preferred to take a victory to the bus for the jaunt back to Whidbey, Wood came away pleased with the effort given by his team, which was not at full force.

“Excellent play by everyone on our 13-man roster for this game,” he said. “It’ll be really good to have our full team one of these days.”

Coupeville gets another crack at La Conner before the regular season is done, with the Braves set to visit The Rock Oct. 25 as the Wolves celebrate Senior Night.

They’re off to see the world.

Coupeville High School athletic teams will spend some time on buses and ferries this coming week, with seven of nine events on the road.

All five fall Wolf squads have at least one meet, match, or game away from Whidbey, with only volleyball and boys soccer getting to play in front of their home fans.

The CHS spikers have the busiest schedule, playing three times, with road matches Tuesday at Darrington and Saturday at Forks packaged around a home clash Thursday with Orcas Island.

Meanwhile, Wolf cross country is off to Orcas Wednesday and Shoreline Saturday for the King’s Invite, while football travels to La Conner for Friday Night Lights.

Rounding out things, the booters hit the pitch, with the boys team traveling to La Conner Tuesday before playing at home Friday against Friday Harbor.

Coupeville’s girls soccer squad is off until Saturday, when it treks out to Forks for a non-league clash.

“Very pleased with the way we played today.”

Coupeville High School boys soccer coach Robert Wood put some extra emphasis on the first word in that statement after his team bamboozled visiting Cedar Park Christian-Lynnwood Saturday afternoon.

Kicking off the front end of a pitch doubleheader, with the Wolf girls playing in the nightcap against Ocosta, the CHS boys rolled to a 7-0 victory.

The win lifts Coupeville to 1-1 on the season, with both games coming against Northwest 2B/1B League rivals.

The Wolves hit the road early next week, traveling to La Conner Tuesday, Sept. 20, before hosting their next two games.

The first of those home tilts will be a Friday special, with kickoff at 4 PM and admission free.

Playing on their own field Saturday afternoon, the Wolves dominated from start to finish.

“Mixing up the formation and player positions does wonders,” Wood said. “Everyone executed the game plan as we talked about – quick deliberate passing with pace and accuracy.

“Off-ball movement to support the ball; three touches max before distribution; aggression and determination to get the ball first; confident defending as a team.”

Coupeville spread its scoring out, with four different players beating the CPC goaltender.

Cameron Epp opened the assault on the net, rifling home a penalty kick in the game’s 10th minute, and then then the rout was on.

Reiley Araceley, Alex Smith, and Preston Epp each scored twice to round out the offense, with all four players netting their first high school varsity goal on the same day.

With four more sharpshooters etching their names in the scorebooks, 67 Wolves have scored for the CHS boys soccer program, which began in 2004.

Things are starting to get busy.

The week ahead features action for all five active Coupeville High School fall sports teams, including the first game for boys soccer.

Those booters finally hit the pitch Sept. 13, when they travel to Mount Vernon Christian.

After that comes their home debut Sept. 17 against Cedar Park Christian-Lynnwood.

Meanwhile, Wolf football hosts Sultan Sept. 16 and cross country travels to South Whidbey Sept. 17.

Girls soccer and volleyball are the busiest Coupeville teams, playing three times between now and next Saturday.

The pitch queens host Oak Harbor Sept. 13, travel to University Prep Sept. 15, and host Ocosta Sept. 17.

Wolf volleyball will hit the road all week, with each trip further away.

The spikers play at South Whidbey Sept. 12, travel to Cedar Park Christian-Bothell the next day, then cap things with an appearance at the SunDome Volleyball Festival in Yakima Sept. 16.

Nezi Keiper set up Coupeville’s first goal of the season. (Photo by JohnsPhotos.net)

“It was a good first game overall.”

The Coupeville High School girls soccer team came out on the short end of the score in Thursday’s season-opener at Friday Harbor, but the Wolves came away with a lot of positives.

A 2-1 loss to a Northwest 2B/1B League rival stings a bit, but it’s one game in a 13-game schedule.

There’s plenty of time to work on fine-tuning things.

“We all played well, but we’re a new team so we’re getting used to playing with each other, especially on defense,” said senior Nezi Keiper.

“But I had a few blocks and one of them I did like a slide tackle for.

Carolyn (Lhamon) was dominating the middle and Ayden (Wyman) was making really good runs.”

Keiper teamed up with Wyman on Coupeville’s first goal of the season, about 10 minutes into the game, with the senior defender setting up the sophomore forward to beat the Wolverine goalie.

The score is the fifth of Wyman’s high school career and moves her into good company.

She’s tied with former Wolves Anna Dion, Britt Harpe, Audrianna Shaw, Jennifer Spark, and Tia Wurzrainer on the all-time CHS girls scoring chart, two goals away from breaking into the top ten.

While Friday Harbor eventually rallied to tie the game before halftime, then edge ahead with a score 20 minutes into the second half, CHS coach Kyle Nelson agreed with Keiper’s assessment.

“It was a tight game, closely battled,” he said. “A great showing for our first game.”

After opening with a conference clash, Coupeville plays its next four games against non-league foes.

First up is an all-Island rumble with 3A Oak Harbor Tuesday, Sept. 13.

That game will go down at Coupeville’s Mickey Clark Field, with a 6 PM kickoff.
