They’re in the driver’s seat now.

Taking advantage of weather which improved as the hours crawled by Tuesday, the Coupeville High School girls’ tennis team managed to play a complete match against visiting Friday Harbor, pulling out a 3-2 win.

The victory lifts the Wolves to 1-0 in Northwest 2B/1B League play, 1-1 overall and puts them ahead in the battle to win a conference crown.

With only two of the seven NWL schools playing the sport, Coupeville and Friday Harbor’s netters square off four times to determine the top dog.

The other three matches between the league rivals are scheduled to go down Apr. 17 and 29 and May 6.

There were serious doubts at the crack of dawn over whether Tuesday’s tilt would be able to be played, with wet courts in Cow Town and rumbling winds swaying the trees back and forth.

But Friday Harbor, wanting to get some court time in, charged on to the ferry and came anyway.

By match time, things had dried considerably, some blue sky had poked through the clouds, and the breeze — while still rumbling — was greatly reduced.

The Wolves swept the singles matches, with Tenley Stuurmans running her mark to 2-0 and Milana Light making her season debut in style, while a doubles victory for Aleksia Jump and Dahlia Miller was the difference in the match.

That duo is also off to a 2-0 start, with Coupeville’s next match a non-conference battle in Port Townsend Monday, Mar. 30, when the Wolves play East Jefferson.

Hailey Goldman teamed up with sister Hazel to win Tuesday afternoon.

Tuesday’s results:

Varsity:

1st Singles — Tenley Stuurmans won 6-0, 6-1

2nd Singles — Milana Light won 6-0, 6-3

1st Doubles — Dahlia Miller/Aleksia Jump won 6-4, 6-2

2nd Doubles — Kauri Hamilton/Jovanah Villagomez lost 6-4, 6-2

3rd Doubles — Rowan Stoner/Jade Peabody lost 6-3, 6-3

JV:

4th Doubles — Hailey Goldman/Hazel Goldman won 8-7

5th Doubles — Savannah Coxsey/Annabelle Cundiff lost 8-7

Well, let’s try this again.

Wet weather across Washington state washed away most scheduled games this past week, limiting the number of wins and losses posted by Northwest 2B/1B League teams.

But hope burns eternal, so Coupeville and its conference counterparts head into a new week hoping on-field action will replace thumb twiddling.

The Wolf girls’ tennis squad is slated to host Friday Harbor Tuesday, with baseball and softball set for home-and-away clashes with the same rival.

The CHS diamond squads host Wednesday, before bouncing between islands Thursday on a potential road trip.

Finally, Saturday will see the Coupeville track and field squad, or part of it at least, head off to the Stanwood Frosh/Soph Invitational.

As the Wolves plow into another week, here’s where things stand through Mar. 22:

Wicked weather, happy fans, as CHS spring sports teams are off to a 3-0 start. (Julie Wheat photo)

Nothing but wins.

While we’re only a week into “spring” sports action and still waiting for our first beam of sunlight on the cold, windswept prairie, the weather hasn’t slowed down Coupeville High School teams.

Wolf softball and baseball have combined to go 3-0 so far, with track and girls’ tennis slated to kick off their campaigns this coming week.

The netters are first up (weather permitting), with matches against East Jefferson and Granite Falls set for this coming Monday and Tuesday.

The first is as home, the second on the road.

Track travels to La Conner Wednesday for a Northwest 2B/1B League meet, before trekking further down the road Saturday for the Rainier Icebreaker meet.

And those winning diamond squads?

Both return to action Saturday with a trip to Bellingham to square off with Meridian.

We still have a long way to go, but here’s where things sit through Mar. 14:

Coupeville’s Davin Houston slices ‘n dices the Mount Vernon Christian defense. (Jackie Saia photo)

The Hurricanes washed out Wednesday.

Both of the Mount Vernon Christian girls’ and boys’ basketball teams fell in loser-out games at the 2B state tourney in Spokane, eliminating the last chance for the Northwest 2B/1B League to win any hoops hardware this season.

The MVC girls, seeded #8, were toppled 52-34 by #9 Davenport, and went 0-2 at the big dance after previously losing 62-34 to top-seeded Napavine.

In a game which finished a bit later in the afternoon, the Hurricane boys, seeded #11, were bounced 60-51 by #3 Okanogan. They previously beat #14 Kittitas 66-47 in their state opener last week.

The other three NWL teams to advance to state — the La Conner, Orcas Island, and Concrete girls — all went one and done.

In 1B, Concrete got whacked 64-37 by Taholah, while in 2B La Conner fell 50-40 to Raymond-South Bend and Orcas Island was swatted 66-42 by Lake Roosevelt.
