Savina Wells rifles a pass to Maddie Georges.

The non-conference rivalries are back.

As well as full schedules.

Looking ahead to the winter season, when the one true sport, basketball, takes hold of Coupeville, those are the first two things of note.

After playing a pared-down schedule due to Covid, the Wolf hoops teams are set to return to a much more normal reality this time around.

Hopefully.

The ongoing pandemic is still affecting things, often forcing scheduling changes and a flexible attitude for coaches, players, administrators, and fans.

But for now things look decent, with Oak Harbor and South Whidbey both back on the schedule, and Coupeville’s teams set to attend a mid-season tourney in Port Townsend.

How things sit, as of today — seven weeks out from the season opener.

Coupeville football had an unexpected week off after injuries forced it to cancel a non-conference game.

Things are starting to drop into place.

The further we get into the fall sports season, the more the frontrunners become clear.

Defending Northwest 2B/1B League champs La Conner (volleyball), Orcas Island (boys soccer), and Mount Vernon Christian (girls soccer) are all back in the lead, while Friday Harbor (football) is rebounding nicely after losing a season to Covid.

While it doesn’t sit in first-place in any sport, Coupeville is solid, currently second-best in volleyball and football.

Originally it seemed like Wolf girls soccer was also in second, but it turns out a score was misreported for the Friday Harbor vs. La Conner game, momentarily bumping CHS down a rung.

That could change this coming week, however, as the Coupeville boosters host Friday Harbor Tuesday.

Toss in home games against La Conner Thursday and non-conference foe Sultan Saturday (that’s Senior Night), and the Wolves have a busy week — and no bus rides.

Boys soccer and football only have a single game apiece, with both teams hitting the road Friday.

The booters are off to Lopez Island, while the gridiron giants travel to La Conner — if both the Wolves and Braves football teams have enough healthy players after both teams cancelled games this past week.

Coupeville’s cross country team doesn’t compete again until the league championships Oct. 21, but volleyball will be busy, with a pair of matches.

The Wolf spikers travel to Orcas Tuesday, where they will attempt to cement their hold on second-place, before hosting Darrington Thursday.

Where things stand through Oct. 10:

Northwest League boys soccer:

School League Overall
Orcas Island 7-0-0 7-0-0
PC Christian 7-1-0 7-1-0
MV Christian 7-3-0 7-3-0

Northwest League football:

School League Overall
Friday Harbor 2-0 3-3
Coupeville 1-1 1-3
Concrete 0-0 0-2
Darrington 0-0 2-3
La Conner 0-2 0-3

Not all losses are the same.

Yes, it’s true the Coupeville High School boys soccer team fell 3-1 to visiting Providence Classical Christian Saturday afternoon at Mickey Clark Field.

The loss, the second-straight for the Wolf booters, drops them to 3-6 in Northwest 2B/1B League play, with six games left to play.

But much like in Coupeville’s 2-1 defeat Thursday against Mount Vernon Christian, the final score up on the big board doesn’t tell the whole story.

Coupeville, which almost lost its boys soccer program last season, played two of the best teams in its league in a 48-hour period, and more than held its own.

Both of the private schools boast a considerable amount of travel ball vets, while the Wolves, who have rebuilt their roster to 19 booters, don’t have that same level of experience.

But what CHS does have is a batch of tough, never-say-die hustlers who are jelling as a team and taking huge leaps and bounds as individuals, and as a group, each time on the pitch.

“Great game today. Awesome play by absolutely everyone!,” said elated Coupeville coach Robert Wood.

Trailing 2-0 to PCC at the half, and playing a team with just a single loss on its record to defending NWL champs Orcas Island, the Wolves rebounded after the break.

Miguel Puente notched his second goal of the season in the game’s 50th minute to pull Coupeville within one.

Nick (Guay), Alex (Murdy), and Xavier (Murdy) all just being tenacious on the back line … then Miguel to clean it up nicely,” Wood said.

PCC showed off their chops with an absolutely-gorgeous goal from 35 yards out, with the ball smacking gracefully into the upper corner of the net, to provide the final margin.

“Rather pro, if you ask me,” Wood said of the final tally.

“All in all … awesome to hold them (a premier-stacked team) at 2-1 until extra time.”

But while the effort was impressive, and the battle intense, the best thing might be that the young, still-developing Wolves exited the field wanting more.

“Kids are pissed though,” Wood said. “Because they know how good they can be.”

The second time was better than the first.

The Coupeville High School girls soccer team wasn’t able to upend powerhouse Mount Vernon Christian Thursday, but the scrappy Wolves fought until the end.

After absorbing a 7-0 loss at home to the Hurricanes, CHS sits at 2-3 in Northwest 2B/1B League action, 3-4 overall.

That leaves them in a tie with Friday Harbor (2-3, 2-7-1), which was shocked 3-0 Thursday by previously winless La Conner (1-4, 1-4).

MVC, a 1B school which has outscored its foes 82-4 this season, is 5-0 in league, 9-1-1 overall, with its only loss against 4A Mount Vernon.

The Hurricanes, with a roster full of travel ball vets, can strike early, late, and from just about every place on the field.

Thursday they broke through in the first two minutes of the game, then ran the score up to 4-0 by the halftime break.

From there MVC cruised in for the victory, though its goal tally was only half of what it scored the first time around.

Coupeville’s defense put up a spirited stand, with Nezi Keiper, Mary Milnes, and Co. showing no fear while facing off with the Hurricane sharpshooters.

Mary Milnes has been a standout on defense.

The Wolves can make a big move in the standings when they return to Mickey Clark Field Tuesday, Oct. 12 to host Friday Harbor in a battle for sole possession of second place.

That will be the second game in a run of four straight at home for Coupeville.

“Welcome to the Lucy Tenore Experience. Get ready, folks — I’m about to go be all awesome.” (Photos by JohnsPhotos.net)

Focus on the details.

Do the little things right, and the big things will get easier.

Coupeville High School varsity volleyball coach Cory Whitmore preaches that philosophy, and Tuesday night his players proved they’ve been listening.

Playing a fairly error-free night, the Wolves cruised past visiting Concrete 25-11, 25-18, 25-11.

The win lifts Coupeville to 6-0 in Northwest 2B/1B League play, 6-2 overall, heading into the biggest gut-check of the season.

The Wolves travel to La Conner Wednesday for a first-place showdown with the two-time defending state champs, who haven’t dropped a set while going 6-0 in league, 7-0 overall.

While Coupeville will be an underdog against the Braves, it will be a good test for the young Wolves, to see if they can carry over the strong performance against Concrete while facing a juggernaut.

“It was good to start the week with a win, and a pretty focused one,” Whitmore said. “We’ve made that a priority in everything we do — start to finish, focus in on the details.

“Details will make the difference down the stretch for us, this year and the next, as we try and maintain focus and get the growth we’re looking for.”

Playing on Dig Pink Night Tuesday, while raising money for the fight against breast cancer, Coupeville jumped on Concrete early.

Maddie Georges ripped off five straight points on her serve — with the biggest being delivered via a mighty spike off the dangerous fingertips of an airborne Savina Wells — as CHS built an early 7-2 lead.

The real set-buster was Lucy Tenore, however, who was uncanny at the service stripe, turning a 9-7 lead into an 18-7 advantage.

The Wolf junior pounded out several aces during her run, while Jill Prince and Lyla Stuurmans came swooping in to smash winners which ended brief rallies.

Coupeville libero Alita Blouin was a magician as well, dropping one winner down the middle of the floor while facing the other way, the ball arcing up and away as pretty as a rainbow.

She was equally as deadly from the service stripe, with several Blouin serves setting up Wells, who was swinging the hammer of the gods while patrolling the left side of the floor.

The lanky freshman almost touched the ceiling as she soared into the heavens, her kill arm whipping downward, spraying kills as Concrete players ran for cover beneath her barrage.

The second set, while a little closer in score, was never in doubt, as Coupeville’s superior fire power ruled the evening.

Prince, Tenore, and Wells ended rallies by beating the life out of the ball, with Stuurmans and Olivia Schaffeld dancing through the air to deliver tips which froze the Lions in place.

Concrete’s errors built up as the final set played out, while the Wolves played with ever-more precision.

Tenore was a terror at the net, and she closed the win with a powerhouse put-away which caused the foundation of the CHS gym to rumble like a tsunami was about to make landfall.

Whitmore emerged from the match pleased with how clean his team’s hitting sheet was — “hard work paying off” — and with how the Wolves and their support staff were able to pull off a successful fundraiser.

Money generated by the Dig Pink event will go to pay for mammograms through the WhidbeyHealth Foundation.

“It was a great night for breast cancer awareness, and, on top of that, we were able to focus on local individuals, which is great,” Whitmore said.

“We have a great group of parents who put it all together, with posters, and balls for the girls to throw to the fans, and the money stays local – I love that idea.”

Tuesday stats:

Alita Blouin — 1 kill, 9 digs, 2 assists
Maddie Georges — 4 digs, 18 assists, 8 aces
Taygin Jump — 3 digs
Ryanne Knoblich — 1 dig
Jill Prince — 3 kills
Olivia Schaffeld
— 2 kills, 4 aces
Lyla Stuurmans
— 5 kills, 5 digs, 3 aces
Lucy Tenore
— 6 kills, 1 dig, 7 aces
Savina Wells
— 7 kills, 1 dig, 6 aces

Savina Wells had six of Coupeville’s 28 aces in a straight-sets win over Concrete.
