Aidan Wilson, always cheerful, even when he’s about to push himself to the limit.

The Coupeville High School grad finished 4th out of 134 competitors in his age group Sunday at the Grand Rapids Spartan Sprint in Michigan.

The race sent runners through a course where they had to evade obstacles, diving into mud, climbing up ropes, and jumping over fire.

Spartan Race officials told a local newspaper there were 4,000+ participants, with a 10K, 5K, and kid’s races.

Wilson, competing in his first spartan race, vied in the 5K open division, finishing the course in 41 minutes, 29 seconds.

He was a solid minute-and-a-half ahead of the 5th place finisher in the 18-24 age group, and hot on the heels of the top three racers.

During his time on Whidbey, Wilson more than earned his status as a Coupeville Sports Hall o’ Famer.

He participated in a mind-boggling 16 events as a track and field star, collecting 41 wins across three seasons.

Wilson brought home five state meet medals, earning three 2nd place finishes, and capped his career by placing 7th out of 32 in a two-day, 10-event decathlon featuring competitors from every classification.

One of only eight Wolf boys to earn as many as five state meet medals, it’s likely he would have gone higher on that list if real-world issues hadn’t restricted him to just two trips to the big dance.

The pandemic erased all spring sports when Wilson was a freshman, and the state meet was cancelled during his sophomore season as track officials limited how far schools could travel in the Age of Coronavirus.

Wilson also ran a season of cross country, while raining down goals on the soccer pitch.

He rattled the net for 10 goals as a senior, earning All-Conference First-Team honors, and finished his prep career with 13 scores, putting him #7 on Coupeville’s all-time boys’ soccer scoring chart.

Rain and mud on Lopez Island left Coupeville soccer players a mess. (Robert Wood photo)

It was a brawl in a mud pit.

Playing on a rainy autumn afternoon Friday, the Coupeville High School boys soccer squad had two opponents.

One was the host team, Lopez Island, which slipped away with a 5-3 win over the Wolves.

The other was the muck and mire, which made doing anything complicated, like scoring goals, three times as hard.

“You should see the uniforms!,” said Coupeville coach Robert Wood. “Everyone is soaked and muddy head to toe.”

The loss, the third-straight for the Wolves, drops them to 3-7 in Northwest 2B/1B League play, while Lopez improves to 3-8.

The Wolves are tied with Grace Academy (3-7) for sixth-place in the nine-team conference, a half-game up on Lopez and two ahead of cellar dweller Cedar Park Christian-Lynnwood (0-8).

Orcas Island and Providence Classical Christian, both 8-1, sit atop the NWL, with Friday Harbor (7-3), Mount Vernon Christian (7-3), and La Conner (5-6) rounding out the standings.

Friday’s game, which kicked off at the very-early hour of 2:15 PM, featured ties at 1-1 and 2-2, before Lopez pulled ahead for good at 4-2.

Coupeville got things back down to 4-3, only to see the Lobos pad their lead near the end to set the final score.

Coupeville’s goals came from Miguel Puente, Nick Guay, and Xavier Murdy.

Puente delivered first, cracking the seal on the net off on an unassisted run down the side, nabbing the third goal of his foreign exchange student season.

Next up was Guay, who converted off of a cross from Cael Wilson, rattling the net for his fourth score of the season, and fifth of his CHS career.

Then it was time for X marks the spot, with Murdy netting his third goal of the season off of a header.

The tally was set up by a nice corner kick from Andrew Williams, with XMan beating the Lopez netminder as he punched home the sixth goal of his high school run.

Coupeville, which has five games left on the schedule, plays its final two home games next week.

Friday Harbor, which just handed Orcas Island its first loss, visits Whidbey Tuesday, Oct. 19, then Lopez comes to town Saturday, Oct. 23.

The latter of the two games will be Senior Night for CHS, with Murdy, Tony Garcia, and Puente honored.

Ryan Blouin and the CMS soccer team survived a wet, muddy game in Granite Falls Monday. (Photos by JohnsPhotos.net)

William Davidson and Co. have one game left on their schedule, a home bout Wednesday.

It rained all over the world Monday afternoon.

Or at least it seemed that way, as the Coupeville Middle School boys soccer squad escaped drenched Whidbey Island, only to end up in drenched Granite Falls.

With the liquid sunshine coming down in buckets, the Wolf booters found themselves sliding across the field, which made mounting an offensive attack nearly impossible in a 4-0 road loss.

With the defeat, the first-year CMS soccer program slips to 2-7 heading into its season finale at home Wednesday.

Coupeville hosts Northshore Christian Academy in a game set to kick off at 3:30 PM.

The weather forecast currently calls for 55 degrees, partly cloudy, mildly windy, and little to no precipitation.

So, exactly the opposite of Monday’s mess.

“Was a muddy game. Every time someone tried to plant their foot, they would end up on their butt,” said Coupeville coach Reese Cernick. “We took several shots from several players and couldn’t get one in.

“I told the guys to just have fun and play a muddy game.”

The Wolves had rung up wins in both of their previous meetings with the Tigers, but this time Granite was a different team, Cernick said.

“Very proud of the team, they tried hard, but Granite Falls played the best we’ve seen them all season.”
