Rivalry games renewed

The circle is unbroken once more.

Previously postponed boys’ basketball games between Coupeville and South Whidbey have been plugged back into the schedule.

The Falcons will hop on a bus next Wednesday, Jan. 24 and trundle up to Cow Town for the non-conference rumbles.

JV tips at 5:15, varsity at 7:00.

The reschedule pushes Coupeville’s varsity slate back out to a full 20 games, with the Wolf JV picking up a 16th game.

After playing only three of their first 12 games at home — and with each of those contests at least 17 days apart — the CHS varsity now gets a five-game home stand.

The Wolves, who are 10-2 and ranked #6 in 2B by Evans Rankings, host La Conner (Jan. 16), Mount Vernon Christian (Jan. 19), Neah Bay (Jan. 20), Concrete (Jan. 23) and South Whidbey during that stretch.

Coupeville’s JV, which is 8-2, plays the first two teams and the final one from that list, with Concrete and Neah Bay not having second units.

CMS basketball rescues cancelled games

The final week will be a busy one.

After scrambling, Coupeville and South Whidbey athletic directors have saved cancelled middle school boys’ basketball games.

Originally, the two schools were slated to meet Monday, Dec. 4 in Langley, but a lack of refs scotched that idea.

Now, the rumbles have been revived, with the new date Tuesday, Dec. 12, with the action still unfolding down South.

That wedges in the games between Coupeville’s clash with the same South Whidbey program Dec. 11 in Cow Town, and the season finale road trip to Lakewood Dec. 13.

So, ice up the knees, find your shooting touch and get ready to play three straight days, before turning in your uniforms and handing control of the gym over to the CMS girls.

Write everything down in pencil, not pen.

The ever-shifting spring sports schedule is moving again, with road games Saturday for the Coupeville High School softball and baseball teams now being home rumbles.

That’s because the weather forecast for Whidbey is (slightly) better than the one for Concrete.

The games are set to go down on the prairie with 1:00 PM starts.

To make up for the change, the second meetings between Coupeville and Concrete on the diamond will flip the other way.

Games set for Apr. 25 will morph from home games to road games for the Wolves.

MVC Covid case scratches volleyball match

Three matches down to two.

This week’s schedule for the Coupeville High School volleyball squad took a hit Monday, with Mount Vernon Christian scratching matches due to Covid issues.

For the Wolves, that means Thursday’s planned trip to MVC is gone, rescheduled to Wednesday, Oct. 20.

JV will tip at 4:00, varsity at 5:30.

Coupeville (5-0 in Northwest 2B/1B League play, 5-2 overall) is still scheduled to host Concrete Tuesday on Dig Pink Night, then travel to La Conner Wednesday for a first-place showdown.

With the MVC match moved, CHS will close the regular season with four matches in as many days between Oct. 18-21.

Surprise!! Saturday basketball is yours!!

This worked out nicely.

Whidbey Island’s one (partial) day of snow cost the Coupeville High School basketball squads a planned trip to Orcas Island Dec. 20.

Instead, it gained both of them an extra home game.

With the two schools scrambling to find a way to get in the planned non-league doubleheader, the decision was made to move the event to today (Saturday, Jan. 4,) but with the games now in the CHS gym.

The Wolf girls (4-2), coming off an impressive take-down of a previously highly-regarded La Conner team Friday night, tip off at 3:30 PM this afternoon.

The Coupeville JV boys play across the hallway in the middle school gym at the same time, with the Wolf varsity boys (0-6) tipping off in the main gym after the girls game ends (approximate tip-time is 5 PM).

There will be no girls JV game, as Orcas doesn’t have a second girls team.
