The last road trip of the season went off with a bang.

Playing away from home for the fourth time Tuesday, the Coupeville Middle School boys’ basketball teams won two of three at South Whidbey, claiming the early advantage in the Island rivalry series.

Now, the Wolves finish the 2025 hoops campaign with three straight in their own gym, hosting Lakewood (Dec. 4), Sultan (Dec. 8) and South Whidbey (Dec. 15).

How Tuesday played out:

Level 1:

Getting double-digit scoring from both Diesel Eck and Kamden Ratcliff, CMS ran the Cougars off the floor during a 50-32 romp.

The win, Coupeville’s second straight, lifts its top squad to 2-3 on the season.

Balanced scoring was the plan, as the Wolves poured in 13 points each in the first, third, and fourth quarters, while spreading the offensive love out between six players.

Eck pounded away for a game-high 17, while Ratcliff popped for 15, with both Wolf gunners racking up points in all four frames.

The dynamic duo was backed by Trey Stewart (9), River Simpson (5), Aiden Wheat (2), and Maverick Walling (2), while Jacob Lujan, Xander Beaman, Darius Stewart, Gracen Joiner, and Colton Ashby rounded out the roster.

The Wolves listen to some words of wisdom.

Level 2:

Coupeville’s hottest team captured its third consecutive victory, crunching South Whidbey 41-34 to get to 4-1 on the season.

Gracen Joiner poured in a season-high 18 points, with 10 of those coming in just the third quarter, to pace the Wolves, with Brady Sherman and Xander Flowers each banking in eight in support.

Braxten Ratcliff (3), Nico Strong (2), and Henry Purdue (2) also scored for CMS, with Brayden Grinstead, Mario Martinez, Abel O’Neil, Jack Bailey, Hayden Maynes, Liam Stoner, and Mica McCloskey also in uniform.

Level 3:

Coupeville’s only loss of the afternoon, as the Wolves fell 35-24.

Now 1-3 on the season, the third team was led by Liam Stoner, who tossed in a team-high eight points.

Alton Hansen (4), Dreyke Mendiola (4), Mica McCloskey (4), Luke Blas (2), and Logan Flowers (2) also tallied points, with Oliver Miller, Jon Driscoll, Logan Dees, Jack Bailey, Dom Durbin, LJ Schultz, Burke Winger, and Gabe Reed also offering hustle on the hardwood.

A new pack of runners has entered the conversation.

While Coupeville’s high school cross country team has already participated in several meets, Saturday marked the season debut for the Wolf middle school harriers.

The CMS runners took to the trail in Langley, taking part in the 46th annual Carl Westling Invitational, and the young guns made their mark in a 3,000-meter race.

Sparked by top-five finishes from Anna Powers and Lincoln Wagner, the Wolves claimed second place in the boys team standings, and fourth in the girls showdown.

Up next for Coupeville is a trip to Sultan Friday, Sept. 26 for the Return of the Salmon Invitational.

Every point counts.

Pulling out one of the closest wins of the spring, the Coupeville Middle School boys’ track and field team edged visiting South Whidbey 95-94 Wednesday afternoon.

Competing under cloudy prairie skies, the Wolves nabbed the victory thanks to their 6th and 7th graders, who came out on top 57-38.

That made up for the CMS 8th grade boys being on the short end of a 56-38 count.

Meanwhile, the South Whidbey girls were just a little too much for Coupeville, holding on for a 97-80 win.

The Wolf 6th/7th graders came super close in a 48-46 bout, while the CMS 8th graders fell 49-34.

That was despite Coupeville 8th grade ace Tamsin Ward making it a perfect 10-for-10 this spring, sweeping to first place finishes in the 100, 200, shot put, and high jump.

Tamsin Ward soars to new heights.

Following on the heels of 11 wins as a 6th grader, and 12 as a 7th grader, she sits with 33 career wins and counting at the middle school level.

Ward’s performance last spring tied her with future state champion Alex Murdy, who also netted 12 wins as an 8th grader in 2019.

Lindsey Roberts, who went on to win eight state meet medals as a high schooler, holds the CMS single season record with 19 wins as an 8th grader in 2015.

Seven different Wolves won two or more events Wednesday, with Brian Thompson (100, 400, Long Jump) and Diesel Eck (Shot Put, Discus, 4 x 100 Relay) hot on Ward’s heels.

Annaliese Powers (1600, 100 Hurdles), River Simpson (800, 4 x 100), Kennedy O’Neill (100 Hurdles, 4 x 200), and Malachi Chapa (High Jump, 4 x 100) were also multiple winners.

Wolf warblers (l to r) Brinnley Meek, Halle Black, Josilyn McColl, Audrey Wagner, and Avery Parker brought a musical touch to Wednesday’s meet.

Across the board, the young Wolves embraced the opportunity to compete in front of their hometown fans at a meet which kicked off with the national anthem performed by elementary school students.

“Several of our athletes talked about how they enjoyed today’s meet more than the first two so far this season,” said CMS coach Jon Gabelein.

“While the other meets were fun adventures, many of them noticed how their improvements and confidence were now becoming stronger due to their hard work at practice.”

And it was more than just the wins, as the Wolves racked up a string of PRs in virtually event, such as the 1600.

In that event, Cyrus Sparacio crashed through the five-minute barrier for the first time in the boys’ race, while Arianna Vinson shaved an astonishing minute-plus off her best time when the girls claimed the oval.

Coupeville gets back at it next Wednesday, May 21, when it travels down to Langley for a rematch with South Whidbey.

Private school foe King’s will trek to The Rock to make it a three-team rumble.

Kennedy O’Neill flies to a win in the hurdles.

Meet #2 went off with a bang.

Competing against Northshore Christian Academy and host Granite Falls Wednesday, the Coupeville Middle School track and field team delivered a stellar performance.

By the time they were done, the young Wolves had racked up 23 wins and 93 PRs.

Leading the way was Hyley Farrell, Coupeville’s only three-time winner on the day.

The 7th grader claimed titles in the 200 and long jump, while also running a leg on a winning 4 x 200 relay unit.

Tamsin Ward (100, Shot Put) and River Simpson (200, Long Jump) joined Farrell in winning two individual events.

Coupeville gets back at it next Wednesday, May 8, when it hosts a meet against South Whidbey.
