Coupeville Middle School basketball will play its next three games at home. (Photos by JohnsPhotos.net)

They’re coming home.

Having survived a road trip to the wilds of Sultan Wednesday, the Coupeville Middle School boys basketball teams now get to play three straight in front of their home fans.

The Wolves host Granite Falls Dec. 6 and Northshore Christian Academy Dec. 8, before a rematch against the Turks on Whidbey Dec. 13.

With more experience under their collective belts by then, Coupeville’s young hoops stars can hope for a better result the second time around against Sultan.

How Wednesday played out:

Varsity:

Coupeville got double-digits scoring from Chase Anderson and Camden Glover, but fell 51-36 to a notoriously-tough foe.

The loss drops CMS to 1-2 on the season.

After coming out a bit cold — racking up just 13 points in the first half — the Wolves went off for 14 in the third quarter alone.

Anderson sparked that run, netting three bombs from behind the three-point arc.

That was part of a 12-point afternoon for Coupeville’s leading scorer, while Glover was hot on his heels, pumping in 11.

Jayden McManus tossed in eight points — his first tallies of the season — while Aiden O’Neill rounded out the scoring attack by banking in five points.

Mahkai Myles, Riley Lawless, Malachi Somes, Easton Green, and Carson Grove also saw floor time for the Wolves.

JV:

Coupeville’s second unit is a work in progress, with few of its players having organized basketball experience, something Sultan took advantage of during a 56-6 win.

Lawless scored all four of his points in the first quarter, while Grove tossed in a bucket in the third.

Jonah WeylMatthew Kuzma, George Spear, Zach Blitch, Kenny Jacobsen, Dylan Robinett, Joshua Stockdale, Captain Teuscher, Ethan Walling, Jackson Waterbury, Wyatt Fitch-Marron, Max Ohme, and Myles also played.

Growth, every day.

That’s the goal for Coupeville Middle School volleyball coaches Cris Matochi and Katie Kiel as they shepherd their young spikers through the season.

And while both Wolf squads fell at Sultan Wednesday, dropping their records to 0-2, growth was just what they saw.

“I think that this game the girls really came together as a team,” Kiel said. “While we didn’t come away with a win, we did come away with plenty of learning opportunities and areas to improve on.

“We still had some pre-game jitters but that quickly worked itself out.”

Coupeville wraps up a three-match road trip with a journey to Shoreline this coming Monday, Oct. 11 to play King’s, then gets three-straight at home.

“I think that the girls will continue to progress throughout the season, and I’m excited to see how we do against King’s,” Kiel said. “We have two days to get ready, and I have no doubt that this team will give King’s a run for their money.”

As the Wolves progress through the season, their coaches are preaching focusing on the positive aspects of their journey.

“Coach Cris and I have been encouraging not only “positive self talk” but “positive team talk” as well,” Kiel said.

“Volleyball starts in the mind, and if we’re mentally ready, then getting physically ready is a piece of cake.”

After a 7-0 win Saturday, Sage Downes and Coupeville High School football are one victory away from clinching a second-straight winning season. (Photo by JohnsPhotos.net)

They like the suspense, apparently.

Both of the wins this season for the Coupeville High School football team have come courtesy late-game scores and bend-but-don’t-break defensive stands.

Saturday, the Wolves travelled to Bellingham to face off with previously-unbeaten Lummi Nation in a non-conference rumble, and once again found that magic touch.

This time it came when freshman quarterback Logan Downes plunged into the end zone with three minutes left in the fourth quarter, lifting CHS to a nail-biting 7-0 victory.

Now 2-1 during this pandemic-shortened season, Coupeville travels to Forks to face Neah Bay next Saturday, May 1, then closes at home May 8 against Northwest 2B/1B League rival Concrete.

As it headed to Bellingham Saturday, Coupeville was coming off a loss, and facing a rival it’s not familiar with.

Lummi Nation, which entered Saturday at 3-0, is a power in 1B football, with frequent visits to the state playoffs — but the Wolves, who moved from 1A to 2B this school year, don’t traditionally play the Blackhawks.

Much like in their season-opening 6-0 win over La Conner, Saturday’s contest was a hard-fought battle between teams unwilling to be scored upon.

“Another outstanding game from our defense,” said CHS coach Marcus Carr after watching Tim Ursu and Scott Hilborn each pick off a pair of passes.

Coupeville also forced a four-and-out on Lummi’s final drive to seal the win.

Nowhere to run, nowhere to hide when Dakota Eck (12) comes looking for you.

The Wolves had their chances early, with senior running back Ben Smith busting off a run which covered almost 40 yards before he was brought down.

But turnovers blunted several of Coupeville’s drives, and things didn’t fully click until late in the game.

Faking a handoff to Smith, Logan Downes, the youngest of Ralph and Angie’s three sons, kept the ball and scooted in from the left side for what would turn out to be the game-winning score.

Daylon Houston tacked on the PAT and that was that for any number changes on the scoreboard.

Ben Smith runs to daylight.

With two games left to play, Coupeville needs one win to clinch a second-straight winning season after a dry spell which stretched from 2006-2018.

As the CHS bus rumbled back to Whidbey, Carr enjoyed the moment, while already looking ahead, at least a little bit, to Neah Bay and Concrete.

“Offensively we played a lot better,” he said. “We are continuing to get better every game.”

“On to Neah Bay!”

The little things were a killer.

Playing a must-win game Friday, the Coupeville High School baseball squad outhit host Friday Harbor 10-5, yet still fell 8-6 on the scoreboard.

The difference was the five errors the Wolves committed, the eight walks they surrendered, and the runners they left aboard.

With the loss Coupeville drops to 6-3 in this pandemic-shortened season, while Friday Harbor (9-0) — the only team the Wolves have lost to — clinches the Northwest 2B/1B League title.

The trip was originally supposed to be a doubleheader, but with the first game running long, darkness on the horizon, and a champion crowned, the nightcap was cancelled.

Coupeville went into the afternoon knowing it still had a shot of at least sharing the league crown, but only if it swept both scheduled games from the Wolverines.

That would have left the two squads deadlocked at 8-2 heading into Saturday’s finales.

Instead, the Wolves will look to build on their positives from Friday and bounce back strongly against winless La Conner during a final, no-ferry-required road trip.

Facing off with the crafty, but not overpowering Wolverines, Coupeville went down 1-2-3 in the top of the first, then almost did the same to their hosts.

Unfortunately, they came up one batter short, and got stung.

After CHS pitcher Jonathan Valenzuela whiffed the first two Friday Harbor batters, the Wolverines took advantage of a pair of errors wrapped around a walk to ignite a fire.

Two singles made for decent kindling, and what looked like it would be a scoreless tie after one became a 3-0 deficit Coupeville would never quite overcome.

The Wolves had opportunity, as senior Daniel Olson led off the second inning with a resounding triple.

Only he died at third, when Friday Harbor’s pitcher dodged a bullet three straight times.

A Hawthorne Wolfe single also went for naught in the third, and by the time Coupeville found its scoring touch, it trailed 5-0 entering the top of the fourth.

That was Coupeville’s best frame, with a walk to Sage Sharp, singles from Valenzuela, Cody Roberts, and Peyton Caveness, and another big three-bagger — this one from super sophomore Scott Hilborn — putting four runs on the board.

The Wolves knotted things at 5-5 with a run in the fifth, with Sharp and Valenzuela collecting base-knocks, but Friday Harbor promptly reclaimed the lead.

CHS stranded a pair of runners in the sixth, after freshmen Caveness and Zane Oldenstadt got aboard on singles, before almost rallying in the seventh.

Friday Harbor made its own errors, dropping a third strike and booting another ball, allowing the Wolves to trim things to 8-6, but that was as far as it went.

Valenzuela (who had eight K’s on the mound) and Caveness each had a pair of singles, with Wolfe, Sharp, Olson, Hilborn, Roberts, and Oldenstadt chipping in with a hit apiece.

Cole White and Xavier Murdy rounded out the very-young Wolf lineup, in which five of 10 players to see action Friday were freshmen or sophomores.

Time to hoist another tile.

The Coupeville High School girls tennis team has the most league titles of any sport played at the school, and now coach Ken Stange and Co. can add a new one.

Bouncing host Friday Harbor 5-0 Monday afternoon, the Wolves improved to 4-0 during this pandemic-shortened season, officially clinching the Northwest 2B/1B League crown.

With two matches left in their six-match rumble royal, Coupeville and Friday Harbor — the only NWL schools to play the net game — meet again March 26 and 29.

The first of those remaining matches, set for this Friday on Whidbey Island, is Senior Night for the Wolves.

Monday, the highlight came courtesy of Helen Strelow, who was making her debut as a singles player.

The CHS sophomore split the first two sets of her match, before falling behind 4-1 in the deciding frame.

At that point, Strelow made Stange’s heart soar, reaching down deep to run off five straight games en route to a 6-4 win in the third set.

Also coming up big was Coupeville’s #3 doubles duo, Noelle Daigneault and Sophie Martin, who also pulled out a three-set victory to keep the Wolves flawless on the season.

On their way to 4-0 as a team, the CHS netters have combined to go 20-0 in varsity matches.
