The day was hot, while the Wolves were scorching.

It was 89 degrees on the turf in Marysville Tuesday, but the heat never bothered the visiting Coupeville High School boys’ soccer team.

Banging home their first scores of the young season, the Wolves slipped past host Grace Academy 2-1 in a nail biter, raising their record to 1-2.

Coupeville controlled the pace of play most of the way, with their private school foes netting their lone goal off of a penalty kick late in the going.

Other than that, it was all Wolves, all the time.

“We put some changes and plays in action,” said Coupeville coach Jim Kunz. “They came out strong from the beginning. Communication and passing was much better.”

The Wolves kept the Grace goalie jumping all day, with Edmund Wilson finding the back of the net off of a pass from Sawyer Rudat, before picking up the assist on a score by Liam Lawson.

It was the first high school goal for both Wolves, with Wilson becoming the third member of his family to score in a CHS uniform.

His older brothers, Aidan and Cael, finished their prep pitch careers with 13 goals apiece, tying them for 7th best in program history.

Lawson, a freshman whiz kid, is part of a legendary prairie family which includes athletic standouts such as grandpa Dale Sherman, aunt Katie Smith, and mom “Killer” Kassie (Lawson) O’Neil.

The Wolves get back at it Friday, Sept. 19, with a home soccer doubleheader at Mickey Clark Field.

Pitch powerhouse Mount Vernon Christian is the foe, with the girls game at 4:00 PM and the boys kicking off at 6:00. Admission is free.

Shuffle the lineup, shuffle the results.

Coupeville and Granite Falls coaches agreed to play Wednesday’s non-conference girls’ tennis match with an emphasis on doubles action, and the Wolves came away with their first team win of the season.

The Tigers, who were playing host, requested that CHS singles players be paired with newer teammates and play pro sets, creating a different learning experience.

“Mashed up the doubles teams and brought some doubles teams back together,” said CHS coach Starla Seal. “Experienced players could act as a guide for the new players.

“Overall, it was a good match.”

With the action moving along at a good clip, the teams even had time to play two singles matches at the end, with Wolf netters Tenley Stuurmans and Dahlia Miller remaining undefeated on the campaign.

Coupeville will be back at home Friday, hosting The Bush School in a non-league tilt — the team’s second-to-last home rumble of the spring.

Camden Glover smashed a pair of RBI doubles Tuesday in a road win. (David Somes photos)

They’ve walked their way right into a winning streak.

Picking up 18 free passes Tuesday including six thanks to players being plunked, the Coupeville High School baseball squad blew open a close game at La Conner late, rolling to a 14-3 victory.

The win, the third-straight for the suddenly streaking Wolves, lifts them to 3-2 in Northwest 2B/1B League play, 3-6 overall.

The two squads get right back at it Thursday, with the Braves visiting Cow Town for a rematch. Which should be just about enough time for Coupeville’s bruises to start healing.

Steve Hilborn’s crew of diamond dogs showed no fear of the incoming baseball, with four different batters wearing the ball.

Jesus Madrigal, Coop Cooper, and Leo Rodriguez all got drilled by wayward La Conner pitches, while baseball magnet Riley Lawless caught horsehide against flesh three times.

While that may seem extreme, the sophomore slugger was hit four times in one game earlier this season, proving he’s tough, resilient, or needs to learn to dodge better. Or a little bit of all three.

Lawless got on base the hard way twice in one inning Tuesday, as the Wolves used a 10-walk, one-hit, eight-run sixth inning to crack things open.

Coupeville entered the frame clinging to just a 3-2 lead, before the merry parade of walks allowed them to pad the lead all the way out to 11-2.

Tack on three more tallies in the seventh, with Camden Glover smoking a two-run double and Trent Thule eking out a based-loaded walk, and the game was on ice.

Early on, the Wolves stranded runners on base in each of the first four innings.

CHS got a run-scoring double from Glover in the third to claim a 1-0 lead, before La Conner snuck ahead 2-1 in the bottom half of the inning.

Coupeville got back in the lead thanks to a handful of — what else — walks, plus some smart baserunning, and a pair of passed balls by La Conner in the fifth.

Meanwhile, a trio of Wolf pitchers combined to limit the Braves to just a single hit, with Cooper, Glover, and Carson Grove combining to whiff 16 hitters across seven innings.

All in all, the visitors were the stronger team Tuesday, with Coupeville winning the hit battle 6-1, while committing a season-low one error, while the Braves botched four plays.

Landon Roberts and the Wolves have won three straight.

Tuesday stats:

Coop Cooper — Three walks
Camden Glover — Two doubles, two walks
Carson Grove — Three walks
Riley Lawless — One single, three walks
Jayden Little — One walk
Jesus Madrigal — One walk
Landon Roberts — Two singles, one double, one walk
Leo Rodriguez — One walk
Trent Thule — Three walks

The offensive struggles continue.

Blanked for the fourth time in five games, a largely inexperienced Coupeville High School baseball team fell 3-0 at Friday Harbor Thursday afternoon.

The Wolves, who are learning on the job, fall to 0-2 in Northwest 2B/1B League play, 0-5 overall heading into a home non-conference game Saturday against South Whidbey, which sits at 1-3.

There were definite bright spots for Coupeville Thursday.

The three runs surrendered were the fewest by far this season, the Wolves committed a season-low one error, and starting pitcher Coop Cooper whiffed 10 batters in 4+ innings of work.

But the Wolves also went down 1-2-3 in six of seven innings, striking out 16 times against Friday Harbor sophomore hurler Jackson Feliz.

The only frame in which CHS put a runner on base was the top of the fourth, and it was a prime opportunity which didn’t come to total fruition.

With Feliz buzzing through a perfect game, the Wolves suddenly loaded the bases with no outs.

Landon Roberts ripped a liner to right field, Carson Grove got plunked by a wayward pitch, and Camden Glover dropped a bunt single down the third-base line.

For a team which has been outscored 50-3 this season, the chance to bust through was tantalizingly close.

Then the door slammed shut, with Feliz picking up another K, before inducing a double-play ground ball to end the rally.

Friday Harbor, which only had three hits on the day, had just enough offense of its own to salt away the win and claim a sweep of the two-game series between island rivals.

The Wolverines pushed a run across in the third, thanks to a walk, a single, and a wild pitch, before adding insurance tallies in the fifth and sixth.

They’re punching above their weight class and landing knockout blows.

Capping a four-game run against bigger schools, the Coupeville High School softball squad dismantled host Meridian 11-0 Saturday afternoon.

The non-conference road win, coming against a well-respected 1A rival, lifts the 2B Wolves to 3-1 heading into the start of conference play.

Coupeville, which hosts Friday Harbor Tuesday in a Northwest 2B/1B League tussle, has beaten a pair of 1A schools and a 2A foe, while losing by just a run to a 3A opponent.

And Saturday’s victory was a case of complete domination.

Freshman hurler Adeline Maynes was on point, tossing a five-inning no-hitter while ringing up 10 strikeouts.

Meridian got two runners aboard thanks to Wolf errors, but other than that, the Trojans had little positive to show for their day.

The game was close for a bit, as Coupeville pushed two runners across in the second but still found itself clinging to a 2-0 lead heading into the fourth.

Those first tallies were created by Jada Heaton and Capri Anter picking up RBIs, but otherwise, the Trojans were dodging bullets.

“Bit of a slower start than I would have liked,” said CHS coach Aaron Lucero, “But we kept working away offensively and then really opened up in the top of the fifth.”

Coupeville plated three runners in the fourth to push the margin out to 5-0, before dropping the hammer with a six-run rally in the fifth frame.

Walks to Teagan Calkins and Madison McMillan got the game-busting surge going, with Sydney Van Dyke driving in a run on a sacrifice.

After that, the hits came fast and furious, with Mia Farris, Heaton, Haylee Armstrong, and Taylor Brotemarkle all bashing RBI singles.

“Our players did a good job making plate adjustments to Meridian’s pitcher as the game went on,” Lucero said.

“Offensively we made the plays we needed to. As always, we put a lot of pressure on their defense offensively when on the bases.”

All nine Wolf hitters reached base in the win, with seven picking up hits, the kind of balance any coach loves to see.

“The team is really working towards execution and always ‘doing the little things’,” Lucero said.

Capri hit the ball hard at the plate, Jada had a solid day, Mia had an absolutely perfect bunt on a set bunt and run play, and several others hit the ball hard that just found leather.

“Another good team win.”

Saturday stats:

Capri Anter — One double
Haylee Armstrong — One single
Taylor Brotemarkle — One single, one double
Teagan Calkins — One single, one walk
Mia Farris — One single, two walks
Jada Heaton — Two singles
Ava Lucero — One walk
Madison McMillan — One walk
Sydney Van Dyke — Two singles
