Wolves fight for elite status

The third-fastest 4 x 1 relay team in 2B is comprised of (l to r) Reiley Araceley, Aidan Wilson, Caleb Meyer, and Dominic Coffman.

The meets get bigger, the battle gets more intense.

Saturday marked the district championships for Coupeville High School track and field, leaving just bi-districts and state still ahead.

The Wolves responded with a strong showing at their home stadium and made a few more inroads on the top 10 performance list for 2B athletes.

Aidan Wilson cracked the code in both the 400 and triple jump, while the CHS boys 4 x 100 relay unit also moves up a slot in the rankings this week.

With two meets to go, 12 Wolves have at least a share of a top 10 time, distance, or height, led by Logan Martin, Caleb Meyer, and Wilson, who appear three times apiece.

“What a fun invite it was!”

Adapt, adapt, adapt.

The plucky Coupeville High School track squad did just that Saturday at the Lakewood Sunny and 70s! Invitational.

Adjusting to ever-changing weather, not worrying about being the smallest of 22 schools in attendance, and boldly trying new events, the Wolves made a positive impression.

“What a fun invite it was!” said CHS girls coach Elizabeth Bitting. “All in all a good time was had!”

The day began cloudy and rainy but ended in sunshine, with Coupeville athletes getting their first try at events like the steeplechase and the 4 x 800 relay.

Wolves Reiley Araceley and Cameron Epp took a crack at the steeplechase — which involves navigating obstacles and frequently landing in water after jumping — though their times remain a mystery.

But they’re not the only ones, as the timing system was set up wrong for the event.

Because of the mistake, race officials also found themselves with no video of the event, preventing anyone from going back and creating times by hand.

So, we’ll say Araceley and Epp covered the 2K course in like 45 seconds.

Speedy, yes I know, but you can’t prove me wrong, so…

Meanwhile, back in reality land, Wolf junior Ryanne Knoblich landed on the award stand, taking top honors in the high jump.

She cleared the bar at four feet, 10 inches, tying her PR and leaving her four inches shy of the CHS girls all-time record of 5-02, set by Yashmeen Knox in 1999.

Knoblich and Co. have four more chances to chase school records, with the postseason schedule sliding into place.

First up is the Northwest 2B/1B League Championships, set for next Wednesday, May 4 in La Conner.

After that, districts go down May 14 in Coupeville, bi-districts May 20 in Centralia, and the state meet May 26-28 in Cheney.

Wolves run, soar in the rain

Who’s afraid of big schools? Not Coupeville.

With a league meet at Concrete scrubbed, the Wolf track and field squad instead headed up Island Wednesday, joining 3A Oak Harbor and 2A Burlington-Edison in a three-team rumble at OHHS.

And, while 2B Coupeville doesn’t have the roster depth to win team battles against schools two and three rungs higher on the student body count ladder, CHS still made an impact.

The Wolves came away with five wins and 27 PR’s on a nasty “spring” day.

Ryanne Knoblich claimed top honors in the high jump, while Logan Martin (Shot Put), Aidan Wilson (800), Reiley Araceley (110 Hurdles), and Caleb Meyer (400) also earned top dog status in their events.

Wednesday’s triple feature was good preparation for Coupeville’s next rumble, which arrives this weekend.

The Wolves are off to Snohomish for the Gear Up Eason Invitational Saturday, an 81-team mega-meet.

Senior thrower Logan Martin will actually get started a day earlier, as the hammer throw goes down on its own Friday afternoon.

We’ve come for all the PR’s

Their time will come.

Facing off with a long-established track and field powerhouse Thursday, the Coupeville High School boys team came within one first-place performance of upending host Mount Vernon Christian.

But while the Wolves came up just short, with the Hurricanes edging them 152-146.5 at an 11-team meet, a statement was made.

Slice a few seconds here, get an inch or two higher there, have an athlete or two nail a PR, and the tables will turn.

Maybe not today, but soon, very soon.

At the league championship meet, at districts, at state, perhaps?

The suspense builds as the Wolves get right back to work.

The strong showing from the CHS boys was the highlight of the day, but a Wolf girls squad which wasn’t quite as deep in numbers also came away looking pretty good, as well.

Coupeville’s girls claimed a pair of individual wins en route to finishing third in the team standings with 88 points, trailing just La Conner (144) and MVC (137).

The meet, held at Mount Vernon High School, featured athletes from four Northwest 2B/1B League schools, with Friday Harbor joining Coupeville, MVC, and La Conner.

Non-league rivals Grace Academy, Lopez Island, Crescent, Shoreline Christian, Fellowship Christian, Cedar Park Christian-Mountlake Terrace, and Lummi Nation rounded out the competitors.

Coupeville finished with 35 PR’s on the day, with Ryanne Knoblich (high jump), Ja’Kenya Hoskins (long jump), and Aidan Wilson (800) finishing atop the trophy stand.

The Wolves have a break in their competition schedule, as they don’t compete again until April 16, when they travel to North Kitsap for the Lil Norway Invitational.

Dominic Coffman finished 2nd in the high jump Thursday as the Wolf boys battled powerhouse Mount Vernon Christian to the very end in the team standings.

Wolf spikers bounce back quickly

Right back in stride.

Less than 24 hours after stumbling against South Whidbey in a non-conference tilt, the Coupeville High School varsity volleyball team returned to its winning ways.

Getting big contributions from multiple players, the Wolves bounced host Friday Harbor 25-16, 25-12, 18-25, 25-18 to get to 5-0 in Northwest 2B/1B League play.

Coupeville, which is 5-2 overall, sits alone atop the NWL standings, though that should change quickly.

Two-time defending state champ La Conner returned from a Covid-related shutdown Monday, and has raised its record to 3-0 in league, 4-0 overall.

The Braves are scheduled to play three more matches before hosting Coupeville Oct. 6.

The Wolves have six days off now, then welcome Concrete, a team it has already beat, to Whidbey Oct. 5.

Barring any colossal upsets, that means La Conner and Coupeville should both be 6-0 in NWL play heading into the first of their two match-ups this season.

But all of that was on the back burner Tuesday, as Coupeville was focused on finding a quick fix for its struggles against South Whidbey.

Mission accomplished.

“Good to get back on the court and bring home a win,” said Wolf coach Cory Whitmore. “We made some adjustments that seemed to do well for us.”

Getting her most substantial playing time of the season, hard-working junior Ryanne Knoblich shone brightly, collecting her first seven kills of the campaign, along with a season-high 13 digs.

And she wasn’t the only Wolf to step up, as Lucy Tenore notched her first solo block of the season, Lyla Stuurmans unleashed her first ace, and Madison McMillan made her varsity debut.

The fourth freshman to play this year for Coupeville’s top team, she joins fellow 9th graders Stuurmans, Savina Wells, and Katie Marti in making an immediate impact.

“Ryanne stepped up and did really well for us playing six rotations,” Whitmore said.

“Madison, earning a varsity jersey, also collected her first varsity kill,” he added. “We are very proud of her progress, and readiness to be thrown in.”
