Wolf junior shot putter Skyler Lawrence is headed back to Cheney for the second straight season.

They’re going to need the big van.

With one half of the West Central District 3 track and field meet in the books, 11 Coupeville High School athletes have punched their ticket to the state meet in Cheney.

Five of those Wolves have qualified in more than one event, and CHS still has another day to add to that list.

Coupeville returns to Bremerton Saturday morning for Day 2 of the district meet.

When it does, CHS will be in the mix for two team titles, as well.

Both the Wolf girls and boys sit in second place among the nine 1A schools competing.

Bellevue Christian leads 72-54 in the boys race, while Charles Wright Academy is up 73-55 on the Wolf girls.

Over the course of several hours Friday afternoon, the Wolves opened the meet by vanquishing foes from the Olympic and Nisqually Leagues en route to winning five district crowns.

Makana Stone (400), Dalton Martin (discus), Jacob Smith (100) and both the girls 4 x 100 and 4 x 200 relay squads (Lindsey Roberts, Lauren Grove, Sylvia Hurlburt and Stone) stood atop the awards podium.

A top four finish at districts is what is needed to earn a trip to state (May 26-28).

Joining the district winners in being Eastbound are Roberts (2nd in the 100 hurdles), Skyler Lawrence (3rd/shot put), Martin (3rd/javelin), Mitchell Carroll (3rd/triple jump), Jordan Ford (3rd/pole vault), Connor Thompson (4th/triple jump) and Henry Wynn (4th/1600).

Especially noteworthy were Ford and Martin, who both had stellar performances.

Ford smashed his own school record in the pole vault, raising it by three inches, while Martin launched the javelin almost 11 feet(!!) further than his previous-best.

Another day, another school record.

Continuing a stellar season, the Coupeville High School track and field squad collected six wins, set 26 individual PRs and successfully stared down two of their three opponents Thursday afternoon at Silverdale Stadium.

And the cherry on top?

A shiny new school record in the 4 x 100 relay, courtesy seniors Makana Stone and Sylvia Hurlburt, junior Lauren Grove and freshman Lindsey Roberts.

The quartet, running against the second-fastest 2A school in the event (host Olympic) zipped across the finish line in 51.10 seconds, the fourth-fastest time in 1A this season.

The same group also won the 4 x 200 and have the fastest time in 1A in that event.

Coupeville’s girls, using their relay win and a triumph in the 800 from Stone, knocked off 1A Olympic League rival Port Townsend 60-56 and bounced 2A North Mason 58-54 in the team scoring battles.

A very-deep Olympic squad bested the Wolves 106-34.

On the male side of things, Coupeville nabbed wins in the pole vault (Jordan Ford) and 300 hurdles (Lathom Kelley) and got a double-dip from Dalton Martin (shot put, discus).

The Wolf boys thumped Port Townsend 84-43, drilled North Mason 89-43 and fell 92-53 to Olympic.

Jordan Ford went a long way to shatter a school record.

Having traveled 153 miles from Central Whidbey to Eastern Washington Saturday, the Coupeville High School senior still had a spring in his step and flew high enough at the 45th annual Cashmere Invitational to set a new mark in the pole vault.

He cleared an even 12 feet, good for second-place in a 16-team meet, going a good three inches beyond the previous CHS record in the event.

The athlete whose name he erased? His own.

Ford’s previous school record had stood for a whole 15 days, since he cleared 11-09 at a meet in Langley Mar. 31.

His high-flying accomplishment, and two wins — Dalton Martin in the discus and the Wolf girls (Lauren Grove, Lindsey Roberts, Makana Stone, Sylvia Hurlburt) in the 4 x 200 — topped a day in which longtime Wolf coach Randy King returned to a school he once worked at back in the olden days.

The Wolf boys finished 7th out of 15 teams in the team race, while the girls were 8th in a field of 16.

Okanogan and Cascade (Leavenworth) won team titles.

With so many teams at the invitational, schools were restricted to just two competitors in each event, which limited the number of Wolves who made the long trip.

Those who did show up set 10 PRs, led by Allison Wenzel, who set personal marks in both of her events (300 hurdles and javelin).

Jakobi Baumann (3000), Lauren Bayne (javelin), Mitchell Carroll (triple jump), Danny Conlisk (1500), Ford (pole vault), Martin (shot put), Stone (800) and Henry Wynn (1500) joined Wenzel in notching career bests.

Former school record holder Amy (Mouw) Fasolo.

Amy (Mouw) Fasolo won a state track title, graduated, got married, had two children and still her school record in the 400 endured.

Until Thursday.

Eleven years after Fasolo set the mark in 2003, Coupeville High School sophomore Makana Stone knocked her off the big board in just slightly over a minute.

Running at a four-team meet on King’s home track in Seattle, Stone blitzed the field in 60.27. The school record was hand-timed at 60.2 (translates to 60.44 electronic).

The second-fastest time by a 1A runner this season, it came on a cold, wet afternoon, leading CHS track coach Randy King to think Stone will continue to bring the mark down as conditions improve.

“I think she will go faster soon,” he said.

The school record was one of four individual wins for the Wolves as they faced off with King’s, Lakewood and South Whidbey.

Stone also won the 200, Erin Rosenkranz claimed the 3200 and Brandon Kelley won the 300 hurdles.
