They’re starting to get some respect from their computer overlords.

The latest rankings at ScoreCzar.org have the Coupeville High School girls’ basketball squad slotted in at #19 in 1A (out of 63 teams).

And, in a rarity, “Debbie,” the sometimes evil computer who dispenses said rankings, has the Wolves ranked behind only ONE team with a losing record, instead of the usual three or four.

So, that’s a start.

And yes, I know the rankings are not just based on records.

While Coupeville is 5-3 (with its losses to teams that are a combined 19-2) and #18 Columbia-Burbank is a much-stinkier 1-3, Debbie likes to give out gold stars for effort.

Columbia-Burbank has played three top-20 schools, while Coupeville has only played two. So, “good” losses can often help as much as wins.

And with the rest of the 1A Olympic League getting little to no love from Debbie (Klahowya is #46, Chimacum #50 and Port Townsend sinking fast at #61), the Wolves could sail to a league title and probably not get a very big bounce in the computer rankings.

They would get a nice shiny new banner to put up in the gym, however, the first in a decade, so they could probably live with it.

In between ranting at computers, let's take a moment to say happy birthday to freshman QB Hunter Downes.

In between ranting at computers, let’s take a moment to say happy birthday to freshman QB Hunter Downes.

Insanity, thy name is “Debbie.”

She’s made of bits and bolts, one and zeros, and she’s an idiot. A stark, raving moron. Of that I have little doubt.

Now, the “Debbie” I speak of is the computer that sits in the corner (hopefully hanging its head in shame at the moment) at the core of http://www.scoreczar.org/.

Admittedly, she has been right far more than wrong in the past, but there are moments that make you think her operator spilled their beverage of choice all over “Debbie” and short-circuited her main frame.

How else to explain that in the newest rankings, the Coupeville High School football squad finds itself SIX spots behind a team it just bushwhacked?

That’s right, the Wolves jumped out to a 29-7 lead on Port Townsend last Friday, then, after losing their QB in the third quarter with a hip pointer, held on and made a stellar defensive stand, picking off passes left and right, to secure a 29-21 win.

The victory puts Coupeville at 3-1 overall, 2-0 in 1A Olympic League play, a game up on Port Townsend (2-2, 1-1) and Klahowya (1-3, 1-1) and two up on Chimacum (0-4, 0-2).

And yet, “Debbie” has Port Townsend ranked #17 in 1A currently (down from #10 before its loss) and Coupeville at #23 (up a measly three spots after BEATING the #10 team).

Whaaaaaaaaaaaa??????????

Coupeville has a better record (3-1 vs. 2-2). It’s undefeated against 1A teams, with its only loss coming to a 2A Sequim squad that’s also 3-1.

Port Townsend’s defining win this season is against Klahowya, which is ranked #32.

The Wolves have wins against teams that currently sit at #17 (guess who) and #30 (South Whidbey) and their third win was against #42 (Chimacum), which is better than Port Townsend’s other win, which came against #51 (Bellevue Christian).

If we want to keep on throwing out stats, the Wolves have outscored the Redhawks 113-104 and their quarterback, leading rusher and receiver all have better stats.

Plus, let’s go back for a second … THEY BEAT PORT TOWNSEND.

On the field, between the lines, they were the better team. They ARE the better team.

But somewhere a computer hums a merry tune and spews nonsense, even if no one with a lick of sense believes her.

Cameron Toomey-Stout wants to know how to make the computers love Coupeville a tad bit more. (John Fisken photos)

Joel Walstad

Joel Walstad has the answer. “Just win, baby!”

Rankings, what are they good for?

Well, starting arguments. That’s a given.

Coming off a 48-24 drubbing of Chimacum (in which they led 41-0 at the half), the Coupeville High School football squad jumped back up 13 slots when “Debbie,” the sometimes-evil, sometimes-friendly computer at ScoreCzar.org, issued her latest rankings.

The Wolves (2-1 overall, 1-0 in Olympic League play) are now ranked #26 in 1A, with this Friday’s foe, Port Townsend, coming in at #10.

Defending state champ Freeman is locked in at #1.

Coupeville’s fellow league mates, Klahowya and Chimacum, come in at #34 and #46. Island rival South Whidbey is at #39.

The only point of contention (and it’s a small one) is that four teams with losing records (#19 Kings, #21 Medical Lake, #22 Stevenson and #24 Deer Park) are ranked ahead of CHS.

Debbie” generally feels losing to a “good” team is better than beating a “bad” one when she spits out rankings.

I would argue that winning, over whatever teams you play, trumps all, since that’s sort of the point of organized sports.

But, again, not that big of a deal. Even at 1-2, King’s is surely dangerous, as always.

What’s slightly more ridiculous are the rankings at MaxPreps.com.

Not where Coupeville is placed, as they are at #31, but that two teams that are 0-3 are AHEAD of the Wolves.

I give you #19 Connell (outscored 124-17 this season) and #24 La Center (blasted 113-3), ladies and gentlemen. And I say, give me a freakin’ break.

Any time where losing big to “quality” teams is more highly valued than WINNING — La Salle (Union) Gap is merely 3-0 but ranked four slots BEHIND Connell — gets my dander up.

But I’m an idiot, not a computer, so what do I know?

"Told ya!!" (John Fisken photo)

“Yep, Wolves rule, Knights drool!!” (John Fisken photo)

Suck it, human voters!

The computers have spoken, and the Coupeville High School football squad is (at least after one week) ranked (way) ahead of perennial thorn in the rear King’s.

Score Czar, the man whose computer (Lil’ Bertha) breaks down every team in the state, slips them into slots and has a staggering record in predicting how seasons will play out, has tabbed the Wolves as the #13 team in 1A after their season-opening 35-28 win over South Whidbey (#36).

It’s the highest Coupeville has ever landed on the chart, and puts them 27 slots ahead of former Cascade Conference rival King’s. The Knights, having been blasted by 2A power Lynden in their opener, currently sit at #40.

The Wolves three new Olympic League mates sit at #24 (Klahowya), #35 (Port Townsend) and #41 (Chimacum) out of 55 schools who play 1A ball.

Tenino holds down the #1 spot, while defending state champ Freeman is #5.

The humans over at MaxPreps beg to differ, plopping Freeman at #1, King’s at #5, Tenino at #15 and Coupeville at #25, but past results show that Lil’ Bertha and her computer counterparts have been right far more often than any puny humans.

Give in to our computer overlords. They like us, they really like us.
