It’s ever evolving.

Game to game, season to season, the career scoring chart for Coupeville High School boys’ basketball remains fluid.

Even during the offseason it can change, as we continue to hunt down numbers from 107 seasons of Wolf hoops.

We’ve confirmed at least partial scoring totals for 420 varsity players and are pretty dang solid from the ’60s up to 2024.

But we’re still missing chunks from the olden days, from Tom Sahli’s sophomore campaign in 1951-1952 to countless unknown (to me at least) hardwood heroes of the ’20s and ’30s.

The puzzle will likely never be 100% solved — unless a prairie barn out there conceals a treasure trove of old-school scorebooks — but we’re getting closer and closer.

With a loss Saturday at the state tournament, the 2023-2024 edition of CHS hoops closes its chapter.

We have a new all-time top scorer in Logan Downes, and he and his fellow seniors, and their scoring stats, are now frozen in time like Banky Fisher or Dale Sherman.

There are four active Wolves on the chart, with Hunter and Hurlee Bronec having one more year to amass points, while Aiden O’Neill and Chase Anderson have two.

Who will join them next year?

Camden Glover? Landon Roberts? Jack and Johnny Porter? Perhaps someone we don’t even know yet, a transfer from another town or country?

That’s part of the mystery which drives us forward, year after year, point after point.

Until we know the answer, here’s where things sit as of Feb. 26, 2024, with active players in bold:

Perfect shooting form equals points in the book. (Photos by JohnsPhotos.net)

Every point captured for posterity.

We’re three games into the eight-game Coupeville Middle School girls’ basketball season, and it’s anyone’s guess who will emerge as the scoring champ.

So far 22 different Wolves have rattled the rim for at least one point, with new additions each time out.

After big performances Tuesday against Northshore Christian Academy, Kennedy O’Neill and Adie Maynes have moved to the front of the list.

But there’s still plenty of season left to play, keeping stats geeks glued to their computers.

Where we stand through Feb. 21:

Kennedy O’Neill – 29
Adie Maynes – 25
Willow Leedy-Bonifas – 14
Brooklyn Pope – 14

“Excuse me, coming through. Pardon me … get out of my way, sister!!” (Jackie Saia photo)

A pause, and then the hardwood life returns.

The 50th season of Coupeville High School girls’ basketball closed Tuesday, which just means the countdown to the 51st season is underway.

Other athletic pursuits come and go, but God’s Chosen Sport is eternal.

Through good weather and bad, through school days and summer afternoons, the pursuit of hoops excellence rolls on, every young woman in a Wolf uniform chasing the greatest scorer in school history.

Her name is Brianne King, and no one, boy or girl, has come close to racking up numbers like she did in the late ’90s and early 2000’s.

But never say never.

Jeff Stone held his share of the CHS boys’ basketball career scoring record for 54 years, until Logan Downes came calling in 2024.

Go back four years, to a freshman season cut down to 12 games by the pandemic, and who among us would have assumed the current Wolf senior would be standing atop the mountain?

Which is a way of saying, you never know.

Haylee Armstrong. Tenley Stuurmans. Tamsin Ward.

Or a 3rd grader working on her shot right now.

They could be the one who joins Downes in shocking the world.

You’ll never know if you don’t keep coming back, season after season, documenting bucket after bucket.

A gym, a basketball, a dream — who knows how they’ll play out?

“These shoes? Why, thank you for asking, Mia. These are my special sweet shooting shoes!! I put ’em on, every shot hits nothing but net!!” (Bailey Thule photo)

Push for the big 3-0-0-0.

As Coupeville High School basketball teams head into a new week — with three of four teams slated to play their final game Tuesday at La Conner — the Wolves have amassed 2,960 points among them.

Leading the way are the varsity boys, who are the one squad headed to the postseason.

Senior Logan Downes, even hobbled by a recent leg injury, has racked up 435 points and counting.

That gives him two of the top five individual seasons in program history, as he tallied 554 points as a junior.

Also in that top five? School record holder Jeff Stone (644), Jeff Rhubottom (459), and Pete Petrov (442).

Which means only 25 points separates Downes from having two of the top three individual campaigns for a CHS boy over the last 107 seasons.

As the latter stages of the season unfold, the numbers continue to tick upwards.

Coupeville High School basketball players have combined to score 2,679 points this season, with 10 different Wolves notching 100 or more.

Even after going scoreless for the first time this season, due to a first quarter injury, senior Logan Downes is WAY out in front of everyone in the scoring race.

The battle for #2, however, is much closer, with JV player Camden Glover 17 points up on varsity star Chase Anderson.

In the week ahead, the Wolf boys play once, hosting Friday Harbor Feb. 2, while the CHS girls take the court on back-to-back days, with Orting visiting Cow Town Feb. 3.
