Scout Smith will not fade away.

Whiffing eight and putting the fear of God in any hitter who dared to dig in against her, the Coupeville hurler sparked her Whidbey 11/12 Little League softball all-star squad to a huge win Monday.

The 10-6 win, coming against South Skagit, came in a loser-out game and guarantees Whidbey at least one more afternoon of softball.

The Pirates, who have a roster made up of girls from North, Central and South Whidbey, will play Anacortes in the district championship starting Tuesday night.

The game, played in Anacortes, is set for 6 PM.

A loss and Whidbey is done.

But win and the Pirates break up the undefeated season Anacortes is enjoying and force another game Wednesday.

Against Skagit, Whidbey built a 7-0 lead Monday, then held on for the win.

Along with Smith’s pitching heroics, Coral Caveness scored several crucial runs and Thora Iverson chipped in with a gorgeous snag while patrolling the outfield.

We are ... Whidbey!

We are … Whidbey!

They have next. After the next ones have next.

A pack of young Wolves are starring on the softball fields this summer, though they’re still a couple of years away from playing for Coupeville High School.

Working together with teammates from North and South Whidbey, the Central Whidbey sluggers are part of an all-Island Little League All-Star softball squad for players ages 11-12.

When they’re not posing for cameras, they’re busy with playoff action, with a loser-out game Monday night against South Skagit.

That’s a team they already thumped 18-3 Saturday in their playoff opener, before falling 9-5 to undefeated Anacortes Sunday.

Bounce Skagit again tonight, and Whidbey will advance to the championship and a rematch with Anacortes.

Whidbey would need to take two in a row from a team that had ten-runned every foe this season until Sunday, to win a district title.

But win or lose, that howl you hear?

It’s the sound of young Wolves coming up fast and strong, hungry to build on their success.

The future of Wolf softball played like champs.

As travelin’ photo man John Fisken clicked away, the Diamond Dusters, a Central Whidbey Little League majors softball squad sponsored by Bailey Dirt Works, pounded the North Whidbey Gold 12-9.

The squad, coached by Ian Somes (with help from Rusty Bailey, Adam Caveness and Ken Martin), has a varied roster.

Some players are in their first year, while a chunk played for last year’s 9-10 District All-Star champs, who were coached by Mimi Johnson.

Headlining the team are four veterans who will move up to the next level after this season — Scout Smith, Marenna Rebischke-Smith, Emma Mathusek and Emma Somes.

The future of Wolf hoops is a bright one.

At the high school level, the varsity girls’ squad went 15-7 and won a league title, while the JV went 14-5. Both teams were a flawless 9-0 in league play.

Meanwhile, the Coupeville Middle School teams, which will provide more weapons for the big leagues in the next year or two, are playing impressive ball of their own.

Roving photo man John Fisken was hanging around the gym Monday as the Wolves played their final home game of the season (they finish with three straight on the road) and snapped the pics above.

Scout Smith

Scout Smith, a young woman of many seasons.

Scout Smith has a snappy name and an even snappier game.

She’s only in the seventh grade, but has already excelled in five different sports, going to the highest level of her age group in her favorite, softball.

As a member of a select softball squad in Michigan, she helped carry the Lakeshore Pirates to the U10 Softball World Series in East Peoria, IL, where they came in fourth.

“My favorite sport is softball. I like softball because I have been around baseball as long as I can remember from watching my brothers (CJ and Hunter),” Smith said. “I love the adrenaline and excitement the game brings and I cherish the friends that I have made from playing softball.”

A family move to Whidbey last winter brought her and her older brothers to Coupeville. CJ is a junior at CHS, while Hunter is a freshman.

With the jump up from elementary school to middle school, Scout has picked up a new sport, as she’s deep into practice with the CMS 7th grade volleyball squad.

It’s her first year as a spiker, but the plucky Smith has been playing sports since her early days.

She played soccer from five to nine, cheered in third and fourth grade, started softball at age five and started shooting hoops at six.

Regardless of which sport she’s playing at a given time, Smith naturally gravitates towards being one of the players always ready to step forward and seize the moment.

“I think I am a good team leader that works hard and encourages my teammates,” she said.

A fan of her math and history classes who “loves all kinds of music and movies,” Smith, a huge Chicago Cubs diehard, would like to one day take her game to a higher level.

“I hope to play college softball for the University of Notre Dame or the University of Washington,” she said.

Already a savvy vet, even at a relatively young age, Smith is quick to spread the credit, calling out her supporters, both in family and out.

“My Pirate coaches, Noe Najera and Greg Younger, helped me improve my game and taught me to always work hard,” she said. “My parents and my brothers have always been supportive by cheering me on and making me raise the bar for myself to rise to the next level.”
