Stuurmans earns All-State honors

Another honor for the hardest-hitting volleyball spiker in Cow Town.

Coupeville High School senior Lyla Stuurmans, who was the Northwest 2B/1B League MVP this year, was tabbed as an All-State selection this week by the Washington State Volleyball Coaches Association.

The outside hitter was named to the 2B Second Team, joining players from schools such as Freeman, Adna, and Lind-Ritzville-Sprague.

Stella Petersen, an outside hitter who led Manson to a state title, was picked as the 2B player of the year.

Stuurmans racked up 200 kills, 22 solo blocks, 19 block assists, 113 digs, 30 service aces, and 16 assists during her final season in the red and black.

Coupeville (18-2) was undefeated until the final day of the season, won league and bi-district titles, and earned a program-best 4th place finish at the state tourney.

On the heels of being named to the All-State team, Stuurmans will sign a letter of intent to play volleyball for Skagit Valley College.

That is slated to happen Friday, Dec. 20 at 3:30 PM in the CHS gym foyer.

Big talent, big brains

One final honor as he hits the road.

Coupeville’s Caleb Meyer was named Wednesday to the All-Academic team by the Northwest Athletic Conference.

The former Wolf, now a Skagit Valley College grad as well, compiled a 3.55 GPA while playing basketball for the Cardinals.

To be eligible for the list, an athlete needed to be a sophomore, have a minimum of 36 credits earned and notch at least a 3.25, which Meyer easily cruised past.

After finishing his run in Coupeville, where he was a key member on Wolf basketball and track teams, the heir to the Videoville legacy suited up for two seasons of hardwood action at SVC.

The Cardinals went 26-6 during Meyer’s sophomore season and finished 43-18 during his time on campus.

One big night down, more to come.

Coupeville grad Caleb Meyer was one of four Skagit Valley College basketball players honored Wednesday during a Sophomore Appreciation Night win over Bellevue College.

The Cardinals, with the former Wolf in the starting lineup, rolled to a 75-63 win.

The home victory lifts SVC to 9-5 in Northwest Conference play, 24-5 overall heading into the playoffs.

Skagit finishes second in the eight-team North region, trailing just red-hot Edmonds, which closed on a nine-game win streak.

The 16-team, single-elimination NWAC postseason tourney runs Mar. 6-17 at Columbia Basin College in Pasco.

Current CHS hoops players showed up to watch the former Wolf play college ball.

Meyer was a key member of a 2021-2022 Coupeville High School hoops squad which won the program’s first league title in 20+ years, and advanced to state for the first time since 1988.

He was also part of a Wolf relay team which finished second in the 4 x 100 at the state track and field meet.

Ready to attack.

During his two years playing at Skagit, Meyer has been part of a very stacked roster.

Fighting for floor time with an assortment of fellow former high school all-stars, he has racked up 27 points (included hitting a trio of three-balls), four rebounds, five assists, and four steals this season.

He’s danger from deep.

Coupeville grad Caleb Meyer came off the bench Saturday in Mount Vernon and made good on his opportunities.

The former Wolf ace got two shots in a 119-89 win over visiting Olympic College, and he drained them both, rattling the rim twice on three-ball attempts.

His six points helped the Cardinals keep alive their winning streak, as they ran their record to a flawless 17-0.

SVC will carry its #1 ranking back into battle Jan. 17 when it clashes with Everett College.

Meyer, currently in his sophomore season at Skagit, has racked up 16 points, four rebounds, five assists, and four steals during the campaign.

After attending Coupeville schools through 8th grade, he took a detour off-Island before returning to Cow Town for his senior year.

Rejoining the teammates he grew up with, Meyer was a huge factor in the Wolf boys’ basketball team going 16-0, winning league and district titles, and returning to the state tourney for the first time in three decades.

Once spring rolled around, he was a track and field powerhouse, capping his run by being part of the second-fastest 4 x 100 relay team among 2B schools.

Second-best win streak of his hoops career.

Coupeville High School grad Caleb Meyer, who played a huge role in the Wolves hardwood squad ripping off 16 straight victories during his senior season, is back at it.

McKenzie’s “lil” bro, currently a sophomore at Skagit Valley College, is now part of a Cardinals crew which heads into the new year boasting a 14-0 mark.

SVC got there by shredding Wenatchee Valley College 103-67 Saturday afternoon, and now is off until Jan. 5 when it travels to play Columbia Bible College in Abbotsford, British Columbia.

The Cardinals have 15 games remaining on their regular season schedule, then hopefully a long playoff run.

Meyer has played in 12 games this season, racking up nine points, four rebounds, four assists, four steals, and 10 tooth-rattling fouls.

During his time in Coupeville, he helped lead Wolf boys’ basketball to its best season in three decades-plus during the 2021-2022 campaign.

CHS, a 2B school, went undefeated during the regular season, stunned 3A Oak Harbor to rule Whidbey, captured league and district crowns, then pushed state powers Kalama and Lake Roosevelt to the final moments at the big dance.

The last heir to Videoville also earned a 2nd place medal at the state track championships for his work on the 4 x 100 relay squad.
