pizza party

The weather was so nice, Wolf athletes (l to r) Emma Smith, Kiara Burdge, Ally Roberts and Maddy Hilkey decided to throw an impromptu pizza party.

When he’s not busy being accepted to Dartmouth, Sebastian Wurzrainer donates a bit of his time to being the best soccer manager in recorded history.

McKenzie Bailey

It takes every bit of concentration for noted photo-bug McKenzie Bailey to not turn when she hears the click of the camera, but she has a point to win right now.

It’s almost over.

Thursday is the third consecutive day with no live sports in Wolf Nation, as Spring Break continues to unfold in all its laid-back charm.

Once we hit Friday, however, we’re back at it, at least for a moment.

Coupeville High School baseball hits the road to La Conner, while Wolf boys’ soccer travels to Puyallup to face Cascade Christian.

Until then, we offer up a smorgasbord of spring sports pics, drawing on all five CHS teams and fans alike, to remind you what they would all look like if they were in action.

Abraham Leyva, seen here in an earlier game, netted a hat trick Monday, using his head to score all three goals. (John Fisken photo)

Abraham Leyva (in white) has scored in all six CHS games this season.

Every time Abraham Leyva steps on the soccer pitch, he has a pretty good idea where the net is sitting.

The Coupeville High School senior is the leading scorer in Wolf boys’ soccer history and he’s making a run at breaking his own single-season mark.

Through six games this season, Leyva has tallied eight goals — he hit one in each of the first five games, then went for a hat-trick Monday against Forks.

With eight regular season games left (and then hopefully a decent playoff run), he’s already more than halfway to the 14 goals he scored as a junior.

Toss in 11 as a sophomore and Leyva has scored 33 times in a little under 2.5 seasons in the red and black.

I was going to compare how his total in 2016 matched up with other booters in the state, but had little luck tracking down other numbers.

The Seattle Times and MaxPreps are a jumble right now (the consistency of girls soccer teams reporting their stats in the fall apparently didn’t carry over to the spring).

Best I could find was Nick Iregui of Charles Wright Academy, who is listed with nine goals, and Reyes Garcia of Hazen, who supposedly has eight.

But both of their stats are just as jumbled as everyone else, so who really knows?

My list of CHS varsity goal scorers, however, I can vouch for:

Abraham Leyva — 8
William Nelson –2
Zane Bundy — 1
Sebastian Davis — 1
Ethan Spark — 1

Sebastian

“So, we meet again.” Sebastian Davis, using just the power of his mind, freezes the ball in mid-air.

McCormick

Future Wolf soccer star Katelin McCormick stalks the sidelines, monitoring older brother Connor’s goalkeeping skills.

Garrett

Garrett Compton sends the ball far, far away. “And never come back!!”

Everyone got home early.

Thanks to some quirky scheduling brought on by Spring Break, Coupeville and Forks played two soccer games Monday and were still home before most parents got done with their jobs.

Thanks to wanderin’ photo man John Fisken, who operates on his own clock, you can still wallow in snappy pitch pics, even if you weren’t at Mickey Clark Field.

The photos above are courtesy him.

Teo Keilwitz (John Fisken photo)

Wolf freshman Teo Keilwitz is currently putting in work on the soccer pitch. (John Fisken photos)

Teo

Keilwitz saw some varsity action on both sides of the ball during his rookie season.

He’s a star on the rise.

Having made the jump to high school sports this year, Wolf freshman Teo Keilwitz is already starting to make a name for himself.

After playing football in the fall, where he saw some varsity action on both sides of the ball and was a leader for the JV, he’s currently running the pitch with the CHS booters.

A midfielder for the Wolves, he’ll see action today on his birthday when Coupeville hosts Forks in non-conference games (12:30 varsity/2:30 JV).

Of course, Keilwitz is not just an athlete, also bringing big brain power to his role on the school’s always-electrifying Science Olympiad team as well.

A strong mix of book smarts and athletic skills, he seems to have an especially bright future ahead of him.

As he continues to become a vital part of Wolf Nation, we want to take a quick moment to say happy birthday to Teo.

May your day, and the years to come, both at CHS and beyond, be blessed, Mr. Keilwitz.

“Thank you! I’ll be here all day!! Don’t forget to tip your waitresses!”

Mckenzie Meyer was born talented.

I know this because I’ve known her since the day she was born.

As the granddaughter of Miriam Meyer, my boss for many years at Videoville, she was a fairly constant presence at the store.

These days the Coupeville High School sophomore is a soccer player, a track runner, a cheerleader, a horn blower in the band, a whiz kid in the classroom and a billion things more.

But she still has time to entertain the crowd with a little derring-do.

Life’s a stage and Mckenzie? She’s a star, baby.
