Bring on the champs!!

Let’s get ready to rumble.

Setting up a Saturday showdown for first place in the 1A Olympic League standings, the Coupeville High School girls’ soccer squad took care of business Thursday night.

Shrugging off a limited warm-up, the Wolves eventually took control and bounced host Chimacum 2-1 to capture their conference opener.

Now 1-0 in league play (3-4-3 overall) Coupeville will welcome defending 1A state champion Klahowya (1-0, 7-3-1) to town in two days.

The game, set for the day of the Homecoming dance, kicks off at 11 AM.

While the Eagles roared to a title last fall, the core of that team, including transcendent stars McKenzie Cook and Izzy Severns, departed, while the young Wolves are just starting to really get rolling.

Facing off with the Cowboys, Coupeville relied on their high-scoring sister combo to ice the deal.

Freshman Kalia Littlejohn nailed her team-high eighth goal, while sophomore Mia Littlejohn tallied her fifth.

Lil’ sis opened things with a bang.

“Kalia was back at it with a killer shot that left the Cowboy goalie grabbing air and seeing nothing but the bad, bad freshman trotting back to the mid-line stripe after outing her team in the hurt locker!!!,” said CHS coach Troy Cowan.

Then, it was big sister’s time, and she responded in style.

“Not to be outdone, Mia did a little corner shopping when she put in a goal from waaaaaaayyyyy out that found the corner net,” Cowan said.

No one is quite sure how Chimacum (0-1, 2-9) scored, especially Cowan.

“There is NO way that goal even went close to going in,” he said. “Can’t tell you anything about it because I never saw it happen. You will have to ask the ref…”

Still, regardless of the score, Cowan came away fairly pleased with the result.

“Girls played fairly well and did their best, but we could have done much better,” he said. “I was proud of them and was happy for this young team and that they started their conference season off with a victory!!”

Troy Cowan was on cloud nine.

Even though his Coupeville High School girls’ soccer squad took a 1-0 non-conference loss at La Conner Tuesday, that was the least of his concerns.

First and foremost was the health of his star defender and team captain, Jenn Spark, who momentarily gave him an epic wave of angina.

Spark, who suffered a devastating ACL/MCL injury as a junior, was running for a ball late in the game Tuesday.

After missing the elusive orb, she went down, momentarily recreating memories of last season for her coach.

“With all seriousness I have to say I was about to have a heart attack!!!,” Cowan said. “She took a (Tim) Tebow pose for like seven seconds that seemed like 30 minutes!!

“My heart went to my shoes and memories of my ER visit returned and started haunting my soul!!!,” he added. “She slowly got up and was wobbly and didn’t look right and within seconds the match was over.

“She was denying anything and everything and later I find out there was a twinge, but later in the night her mom sends me a comforting text that she is okay!!! And I can finally fall asleep at 3:15 AM…”

While the loss, coming in Coupeville’s first game after 10 days off, dropped the Wolves to 2-4-3, coming so close to a very good La Conner (10-2) team while giving his bench a thorough workout was also cause for joy for Cowan.

“They did awesome!!! Last non-conference match, so I played a lot of bench players because I know once conference matches start my rotation will go down to about 13-14 players,” he said.

“We actually dominated the entire match and totally controlled possession throughout,” Cowan added. “I was so happy with the way we played.”

The Wolves, who kick off their six-game 1A Olympic League schedule with a trip to Chimacum Thursday, are a very young team.

CHS lost eight seniors, all key players, to graduation in the spring.

“Only having two returning seniors (Spark and Kirsten Pelroy) really allows us to rebuild and focus on building from the ground up and this team has proven that they will be a force to be reckoned with for years to come!!!,” Cowan said.

Cowan was especially pleased with his defense.

“Everything on our team starts and ends with our defensive unit and last night they were just on full tilt!!!,” Cowan said. “Lindsey Roberts especially, just her masterful ball control was unbelievable and her decision making as a freshman was truly remarkable!!

“Lauren Bayne and Mckenzie Meyer are two outstanding, incredibly intelligent young ladies with brilliant soccer careers in front of them,” he added.

Also drawing big praise was junior Lauren Grove, who made the jump from volleyball this season and has moved right in as the starting goaltender.

“Our goalie, get out!!! I can’t say enough good things about her,” Cowan said. “Master performance last night!!! Lauren Grove is a beast in the box.

“Not sure where she has been or why she has not been playing soccer but I want to thank the soccer Gods for sending this athlete to the Lady Wolves because she is not only saving goals but turning heads and catching the attention of some big league coaches eyes!!!”

Ninjas and Goblins and Thunder Snakes, oh my!!

“Did you wrap your ankles? Good, good… Cause I’m about to break ’em.”

“Don’t look now, but the paparazzi is here.”

“I am a whirlwind of intensity! It’s just who I am…”

“Don’t blink, baby, or you’ll miss me making SportsCenter with this move!”

OK, first things first, are any of these kids actually from Coupeville?

No freakin’ clue.

That being said, they were all playing soccer at Ft. Nugent Park in U8 games and they made for great photo subjects. So, good enough for me.

Plus, they had team names like American Ninja Snipers, Yellow Thunder Snakes, Super Pink and Green Goblins, so creativity is still ruling on the soccer pitch.

Rainin’ down goals!!

And then a ballet broke out at mid-field.

“AAAAAAAAA!!!! I may have just pulled a muscle … or 20 of them.”

“Boys…” Wynter Arndt is not impressed.

Montiel, on the move and slicin’ ‘n dicin’ the defense.

“Hey, that’s my ball. I’ll just take it back now. Yoink!”

Arndt, serene off the pitch, but ruthless when battling for the ball.

“Outta my way! I got goals to score, fool!!”

Arisbeth Montiel’s little sister is a goal-scoring superstar.

That much is very evident when you look at pictures of Marlen Montiel in action from Saturday youth soccer.

Following in the footsteps of her older sister, who has scored twice for the CHS girls’ soccer squad this year (sister Citlalli is also on the Wolf roster), the little Montiel is already claiming the spotlight.

With travelin’ photo man John Fisken out and about, snapping pics wherever a soccer ball might be bouncing, Montiel and other future Wolf booters are getting their moment tonight.
