Sluggers pile up big numbers!!

Halfway in and the stat sheet is on fire.

The Coupeville High School softball squad, which jumps into the second half of the regular season this week with games against La Conner and Klahowya, is humming along at 7-3.

Coming off of an offensive fireworks show at Friday Harbor, the Wolves have some impressive numbers, and I’m here to share them with you.

We shoot? We score!!

The offense has a little extra octane in it this year.

The Coupeville High School boys soccer squad passed the halfway point of the regular season Monday, and sits at 4-3-1 overall, 3-1 in Olympic League play.

After upcoming back-to-back non-conference tilts with Forks and Port Angeles, the Wolves close with five straight conference games, then hope to be playoff-bound.

If the goal-scoring stays at current levels, a postseason berth should be fairly easy to get.

With nine different players tallying at least one score, CHS has already rattled the net for 34 goals.

That figure tops last year’s season-ending totals and is already the fourth-best team mark in the last nine years.

Why am I using nine seasons for this comparison, you ask? Easy answer — that’s what the Olympic League site has archived.

So, looking at the Wolf boys from 2010 to this moment in time, here’s how things have played out.

When it comes to individual scoring, sophomore Derek Leyva, who transferred to Coupeville this year, is out in front and chasing the Wolf single-season records.

On the boys side, that mark belong to Derek’s cousin, Abraham Leyva, who punched in 20 in one campaign, while Mia Littlejohn owns the school record with 27.

They’re sailing to new heights.

When this year’s seniors were raw freshmen, Coupeville High’s varsity volleyball team finished 1-11.

Jump forward three seasons, and the Wolves are rampaging along at 9-2, with three regular season matches left to play.

CHS is undefeated in league play (6-0), one win away from clinching back-to-back league titles and closing in quickly on the program’s record for victories in a season.

That mark is 13, set in 2004 by the last Wolf spiker squad to advance to the state tourney.

Coupeville just missed last year in Cory Whitmore’s first season as head coach, finishing 11-6 after two narrow losses at districts.

As the Wolves head into the final week of the regular season, now is a perfect time to catch up on all the stats piled up by the 12 young women who have appeared in a varsity match.

As the stats world turns!!

Football stats are like a giant, shifting sand dune.

As the winds blow through, some piles rise and others fall, and, most times, you can’t totally control where the sand ends up.

Injuries are a killer on the gridiron, and, thanks to various hurts, Wolf stars Hunter Smith, Sean Toomey-Stout and Chris Battaglia have taken a stats hit in the last week or two.

At the same time, their absence has opened the gates for players such as Andrew Martin, Jake Hoagland and Teo Keilwitz, who have all seen their stats rise in the past two weeks.

Through it all, the most consistent weapon has been receiver/defensive back Cameron Toomey-Stout, who has stayed healthy and productive.

The senior standout is now #1 for CHS in six categories — receiving yards, touchdowns, points, all-purpose yards, interceptions (a tie with Smith) and return yards.

The man throwing him the ball, senior quarterback Hunter Downes, is busy making a run at the record books.

Through six games, he’s averaging 182.7 passing yards and 1.8 TD passes a game.

Stay at that pace through the final four contests and Downes would tie Joel Walstad’s single-season TD record (18 in 2014) and just miss Ian Smith’s single-season passing yardage mark (1,848 in 2010).

With 2,937 yards and 29 TD’s for his career, Downes is also closing in on Coupeville’s career records in those categories.

The man he’s chasing, Brad Sherman, the Wolf Offensive Coordinator, finished his run on the gridiron with 3,613 yards and 33 TD’s.

Downes and Co. will kick off the first of three straight home games this Friday, when Bellevue Christian comes to town for Coupeville’s Homecoming game.

Last year, Downes blitzed the Vikings for four scoring strikes, tying the CHS single game record. If history repeats itself, Friday the 13th could be historical.

As you count down the hours until that game, take a gander at the season-to-date stats, as compiled by CHS coaches and posted on MaxPreps.

Keep in mind, though, that when you look at where Wolf players are ranked, it comes with one caveat — not all teams in the state are actively reporting stats.

As milestones go, it was a fairly quiet one.

Coupeville High School senior Hunter Smith already owns or shares seven football records, but late in last Friday’s home game against Charles Wright Academy, he pulled in yet a bit more of history.

His final snag of the game, on which he was denied a touchdown by a spectacularly blind ref, was his fifth catch of the game.

More importantly, it was the 100th reception of his stellar career.

While I can’t claim with absolute certainty he is the only Wolf to break the triple-digit receptions barrier, it seems to make absolute sense.

Smith has surpassed every CHS receiver in every category which matters, making it highly unlikely any of them reached the same milestone.

As Coupeville chases numerous team and individual offensive marks — senior QB Hunter Downes is angling for a few himself — the Wolves boast the #3 scoring offense among the eight Olympic/Nisqually League teams.

That number could take a large positive bounce this week, as CHS (2-2 overall, 0-1 in league play) heads to Vashon (0-4, 0-1).

The Pirates have the worst scoring defense in the league, and it’s not close, having been outscored 206-14 this season.
