Right back at it.

Bouncing back strongly from its first loss of the season, the Coupeville 8th grade SWISH girls basketball team got back on the winning side of things Saturday, drilling Orcas Island 34-9.

The win lifts the Wolves to 5-1 heading into the final weekend of regular-season play.

Coupeville plays a doubleheader Dec. 8, facing Victorious Hoops and Arlington, then wades into the fray of the league tourney Dec. 15.

Saturday’s game was all about domination, as the Wolves sprinted out to a 12-0 lead after one quarter of play and never looked back.

By the time it was done, Coupeville had gotten points from seven of its 10 players and outscored Orcas in all four quarters of play.

Carolyn Lhamon paced the Wolves with seven points, while Maddie Georges and Alita Blouin tickled the twine for six apiece.

Brionna Blouin and Savina Wells each added five, with Blouin netting a long three-ball, while Gwen Gustafson knocked down three and Nezi Keiper popped for two.

Coupeville controlled the glass all game, with Wells, a 6th grader playing two grades up, yanking down a game-high 15 rebounds.

Lhamon (7) and Keiper (6) provided support on the boards, while Ryanne Knoblich, Lauren Marrs and Gustafson all pulled down two rebounds apiece.

Hayley Fiedler, a scrapper on defense, rounded out the Wolf squad.

A minor setback!!

Turnabout is fair play. I guess.

Using a key fourth-quarter surge Saturday to nail down the win, Mount Vernon Christian avenged an early-season loss to the Coupeville 8th grade SWISH girls basketball team.

The Wolves entered the final frame trailing by just three, but an 11-4 run by their foes led to a 33-23 defeat.

The loss drops Coupeville to 4-1 on the season, with three regular-season games left to play over the next two weekends.

When these two squads met the first time, back in the season opener, it was the Wolves who came out on top 26-18.

This time around, it was a brawl, for three quarters at least.

Coupeville, getting points from four different players, surged to a 7-6 lead after one quarter, before MVC used 7-5 and 9-7 runs over the next two quarters to claim control of the game.

Free throws were a bugaboo for both teams, but the Wolves, while shooting a slightly higher percentage, were stung by how many points they left on the rim.

MVC only hit 3 of 12 charity shots, but Coupeville, at 7-23, could have reversed the flow of the game with a better run at the stripe.

The Wolves split up their scoring between seven players, with Gwen Gustafson and Maddie Georges topping the team with five points apiece.

Alita Blouin and Savina Wells each tossed in four, while Nezi Keiper (2), Brionna Blouin (2) and Carolyn Lhamon (1) rounded out the offensive attack.

The Hurricanes countered with a two-woman onslaught, as a pair of MVC players combined to rattle home 29 of their team’s 33 points.

Wells, a 6th grader playing two grades up, paced Coupeville on the boards, snagging 10 caroms, while Lhamon snatched seven and Keiper reeled in four.

The Wolves got something from everyone on their 10-player roster, with Hayley Fiedler and Ryanne Knoblich chipping in with two rebounds each, while Lauren Marrs played strongly on defense.

Swish! Swish! Still undefeated!!

Can’t be stopped. Won’t be denied.

Playing two very different types of ballgames Saturday, the Coupeville 8th grade SWISH girls basketball team responded the only way it knows – by winning.

After overcoming a tough South Whidbey squad, escaping with a hard-fought, come-from-behind 28-25 win, the Wolves drilled far-less-competitive Orcas Island, using a withering defense to romp to a 22-9 victory.

The doubleheader sweep, coming on the road at Mount Vernon, lifts Coupeville to 4-0 at the halfway point of the Skagit County Parks and Rec League regular season.

The Wolves have a single game on both Nov. 24 and Dec. 1, each against teams they have previously beaten, then close with a doubleheader Dec. 8.

The league’s postseason tourney is set for Dec. 15.

With two games on the schedule Saturday, Coupeville got its big test out of the way early.

South Whidbey, led by sweet-shooting gunner Madison Knauer, who banged home four three-balls on her way to a game-high 16 points, jumped out to an early lead.

Down by four at the first break, the Wolves responded with an 8-3 run in the second quarter.

Shutting down the Falcon shooters, then pounding the ball inside to Carolyn Lhamon, who knocked down two big buckets, Coupeville reclaimed the lead and control of the game.

What the Wolves couldn’t do was pull away, as a 14-13 halftime lead turned into a 23-22 advantage after a back-and-fourth third quarter.

Coupeville finally put the hammer down in the fourth, thanks to buckets from Alita Blouin and Nezi Keiper, a free-throw from Blouin and another burst of stifling defense.

Lhamon paced the Wolves with eight points and six rebounds, while Blouin (7), Keiper (6), Maddie Georges (4), Gwen Gustafson (2), and Savina Wells (1) also scored.

Keiper led Coupeville on the boards, snagging eight caroms, with Georges glomming on to seven and Wells pulling down four.

The nightcap was much more of a one-sided affair, as the Wolves sprinted out to an 8-2 lead after one quarter, then stretched it to a 14-5 bulge at the half before coasting home.

Wells, a quicksilver 6th grader playing two grades up, tossed in a team-high six points and reeled in five rebounds.

Georges, Blouin and Lhamon added four points apiece, while Lauren Marrs and Keiper both dropped in a bucket.

Lhamon, Georges and Keiper tied for top honors with six rebounds each, and spark-plugs Hayley Fiedler (4) and Ryanne Knoblich (3) helped clean the glass.

Death and destruction.

That’s what the Coupeville 8th grade SWISH girls basketball team brings to the floor, as it proved once again Saturday afternoon.

Thrashing Mount Vernon Blade Chevrolet 30-3 while playing in Burlington, the Wolves improved their early-season record to a crisp 2-0.

Coupeville gets a chance to double that win total next Saturday, Nov. 17, when they face South Whidbey and Orcas Island in a doubleheader in Mount Vernon.

Playing in a rough-and-tumble affair Saturday, the Wolves jumped out to a 7-0 lead after one quarter, before coasting in to the halftime break up 15-1.

They didn’t give up a field goal until the third quarter, while seven of their 10 players made it into the scoring column.

Sixth-grade sensation Savina Wells torched the nets for nine points to pace Coupeville, while Brionna Blouin banked home six and Maddie Georges knocked down five.

Nezi Keiper tossed in four in her season debut, with Hayley Fiedler, Alita Blouin and Gwen Gustafson each adding a bucket to the cause.

Ryanne Knoblich, Carolyn Lhamon and Lauren Marrs didn’t have a chance to score, but each contributed on the defensive side of the ball.

The future of Wolf hoops is here, and it’s already rampaging on the hardwood.

Balanced scoring and a killer third quarter equals victory.

At least it did Saturday for the Coupeville 8th grade SWISH girls basketball squad, which bounced Mount Vernon Christian 26-18 in its season-opener.

Busting open a tied game, the Wolves used a 9-2 run in the third, with five players scoring, to claim the victory.

The big shot came from Lauren Marrs, who knocked down a three-ball, while Gwen Gustafson and Brionna Blouin added buckets of their own.

Savina Wells and Maddie Georges each slipped a free throw through the net to round out Coupeville’s third-quarter outburst.

Georges had the hot hand early, hitting a pair of first-quarter buckets as the Wolves went to the first break up 8-7.

After MVC knotted things at 12-12 at the half, Coupeville responded in grand fashion in the third, than held on behind the play of Carolyn Lhamon in a see-saw fourth quarter.

Lhamon led the Wolves with six points and 14 rebounds, while Georges (5), Brionna Blouin (4), Marrs (3), Alita Blouin (3), Hayley Fielder (2), Gustafson (2), and Wells (1) all put points on the board.

Ryanne Knoblich was a terror on defense for Coupeville, and Wells, who is just a 6th grader, snagged nine boards.
