Payton Aparicio

Payton Aparicio: Big smile, big talent.

Payton Aparicio is a legacy.

Nearly everyone connected to her family has a strong athletic tradition, from parents Mitch and Tami (Stuurmans) Aparicio, to big sis Sydney and countless aunts and uncles (Marc Aparicio, Scott and Sarah Stuurmans, Kim (Stuurmans) Bepler, just to name a few) on both sides of the family.

Heck, grandpa Cecil Stuurmans is even one of the legendary coaches in Coupeville High School history.

So when Payton hit CHS as a freshman this year, she was following in big footsteps.

Which won’t be a problem.

Whether she hits big in her sports (she played volleyball in the fall and has already gotten some serious buzz after a week of tennis practice) or not, it’s likely she’ll remain the same sweet-natured, highly-intelligent young woman she has always been.

She’ll just have a huge, emotional fan club at every one of her contests.

As she gets ready for her first high school tennis match, a sport Sydney was a success in, Payton is also celebrating a birthday today.

So, from all of us in the cheap seats, happy birthday Miss Aparicio.

May all your days at CHS be as fun for you as they were for all your ten billion relatives.

Sydney Autio

Sydney Autio

Sydney Autio made her move last year.

Just a sophomore at the time, she became a key member of both the Coupeville High School volleyball and girls’ tennis squads, beaming out her mega-watt smile as she soared in both sports.

On the volleyball court, Autio took over at a key spot, holding down the setter position for the Wolves, directing traffic and setting up her teammates with her precision passing.

When spring rolled around she went a step or two further, advancing to the postseason, where she teamed up with senior Sydney Aparicio to form a deadly doubles duo known as Sydney Squared.

Oh yeah, and she also did double duty at times, scraping out the time to be part of the Wolf cheer squad while still competing in another sport at the same time.

With two years left in her high school career, the sky is the limit for the talented, bubbly Autio.

As she celebrates her birthday today, let’s take the opportunity to get in on the ground floor of her fan club.

And now is the right time to do so, because if she continues to play with the passion and joy she’s exhibited so far, that fan club will be very, very crowded by the time she reaches her various Senior Night festivities.

Happy birthday, Sydney.

You’re a joy to watch play and here’s hoping your fun never stops.

Sydney Aparicio

Sydney Aparicio, an athlete who had fun in every season.

Sydney Aparicio knows a few people.

During her Senior Night festivities for volleyball, family of all shapes, sizes and ages crowded into the Coupeville High School gym. Each one wore home-made t-shirts that identified what their relationship was to the Wolf spiker.

Sydney’s mom. Sydney’s sister. Sydney’s cousin.

There were a lot.

Which is not a surprise, since her parents, Mitch and Tami (Stuurmans) Aparicio united two of Coupeville’s top sports families when they got married.

Sydney, who celebrates her birthday today, played tennis, softball and volleyball, as well as following in her mom’s footsteps as one of the leading CHS cheerleaders.

She did it all well, and always with a huge smile.

I don’t know that I’ve ever seen Miss Aparicio frown. Ever.

I’m sure she has at some point in her life, but her smile was always front and center during her athletic days, win or loss.

Sydney always had fun, regardless of the sport, and it was infectious.

Following in the footsteps of her parents, and a billion aunts and uncles, she set the path for equally bubbly little sister Payton, who will be a Wolf freshman this fall.

She kept the family tradition of excellence alive and seemed to genuinely enjoy herself through every season, every game.

That’s a rare quality, and one shown by a rare young woman.

Happy birthday, Miss Aparicio, and may your days ahead be as smile-inducing as the ones you lived out as a Wolf.

They got that winning feeling back.

Snapping a five-match losing streak, the Coupeville High School girls’ tennis squad shredded visiting Granite Falls 4-1 Tuesday. The victory avenged a narrow loss to the Tigers from last week, and put a smile on CHS coach Ken Stange’s face.

After taking a 5-2 loss to the joint forces of Port Townsend and Chimacum a day before, Stange shuffled his lineup and everything clicked against the Tigers.

The win lifted Coupeville to 4-7 with two matches left in the regular season.

The highlight of the Granite Falls match came from a new-look doubles duo of Wynter Thorne and Sydney Aparicio, who collected Player of the Match honors for a gritty win.

Sydney and Wynter both played the best tennis of their lives, and they did it against the GF duo who held my #1 team to five games in our match last week,” Stange said. “They hit harder, they were more accurate, and they went for each and every ball. It was inspiring tennis.”
