The sun was shining, the PRs were popping, and the rivalry was raging.

Coupeville Middle School welcomed next-door neighbor South Whidbey to Cow Town Wednesday, with athletes from the two schools lighting up the oval.

While the Falcons finished atop the team standings, the Wolves held up well against the powerhouse Falcons, claiming 11 wins.

Eighth grader Beckett Green topped CMS, claiming victory in the 100 and 200, while also running a leg on a triumphant 4 x 100 relay squad.

Joining him as dual winners were 7th grade supernovas Brooklyn Pope (High Jump, Long Jump) and Tamsin Ward (100, Shot Put).

Ward, who claimed 11 victories in her middle school track debut a year ago, has a team-high seven wins through the first three meets this season, all in individual events.

With two relay wins and four individual titles so far this time around, Green is hot on her heels, while Pope has racked up five wins in her first season of track.

Along with the wins, Coupeville collected 88 PRs Wednesday.

“Our athletes have been working hard to sharpen their skills and reach even higher speeds,” said CMS coach Jon Gabelein.

“Extra efforts allowed many of them to enjoy earning impressive PR’s tonight!

“With our season already at the halfway point, we look forward to helping them stay focused and moving forward so they can achieve even more during the coming weeks.”

The Wolves get back at it next Thursday, May 16, when they travel to Langley for a rematch with South Whidbey.

Meet #2 went off with a bang.

Competing against Northshore Christian Academy and host Granite Falls Wednesday, the Coupeville Middle School track and field team delivered a stellar performance.

By the time they were done, the young Wolves had racked up 23 wins and 93 PRs.

Leading the way was Hyley Farrell, Coupeville’s only three-time winner on the day.

The 7th grader claimed titles in the 200 and long jump, while also running a leg on a winning 4 x 200 relay unit.

Tamsin Ward (100, Shot Put) and River Simpson (200, Long Jump) joined Farrell in winning two individual events.

Coupeville gets back at it next Wednesday, May 8, when it hosts a meet against South Whidbey.

Wolf 8th grader Ari Cunningham won the long jump Wednesday. (Jackie Saia photo)

Tamsin Ward is right back at it.

A year after winning 11 events during her debut middle school track and field season, the now 7th grader got off to a strong start Wednesday, claiming three more titles during the season opener.

Overall, Coupeville earned 20 wins (and approximately 1,002 PRs) as it faced off with visiting Lakewood.

Ward, whose 11 wins were the most for a CMS girl since Lindsey Roberts won 18 during her 8th grade season in 2015, came out on top in the 100, shot put, and high jump on an overcast prairie afternoon.

She was joined as a three-time winner by 6th grader River Simpson, who came out of the gate strongly with victories in the 100, 4 x 100 relay, and long jump.

Coupeville’s 7th grade girls crew appears deep and talented, as Hyley Farrell (4 x 1 and 4 x 2) and Elizabeth Marshall (100 Hurdles, 4 x 2) also won multiple titles.

CMS coaches Amber Wyman and Jon Gabelein have an astonishing 77 athletes out for track, as Cow Town’s numbers are booming.

“Our first track meet of the year was definitely a big adventure,” Gabelein said.

“Our athletes set great personal baseline marks that they can now begin to work hard to improve throughout the season. All of the positive attitudes and good sportsmanship made a big difference.

The Wolves return to competition next Wednesday, May 1, when they travel to Granite Falls.

She’s off to an impressive start.

Coupeville Middle School 6th grader Tamsin Ward won 11 times, across four different events, in the just-concluded track and field season.

While middle school stats are notoriously hard to document (more on that in a second), her 2023 campaign ranks as the third-best put up by a Wolf athlete in the last 15 years.

Only Lindsey Roberts, with 18 wins, and state champ Alex Murdy, with 12, had more in a single spring, and both accomplished that feat as 8th graders.

Danny Conlisk (10), who went on to win two state titles as a high school runner, is fourth, while Nick Laska notched nine victories as a 7th grader this spring, tying him with Makana Stone at #5 on the CMS single-season list.

Now, here’s where we talk about why it’s nearly impossible to fully document what may have happened in the past.

While athletic.net makes modern life much easier, compiling track and field activity from across the country, it’s only been with us since 2004.

Originally released just in Oregon (not a state we live in), its Coupeville Middle School-related data doesn’t go back any further than 2008.

So, while I can document 87 Wolves who have earned a medal at the high school state track and field championships — dating back to 1963 — only 39 of those competitors have readily available middle school results.

But wait, CMS might have something in its own records … ha ha, just kidding. No one held on to anything.

So, while Tyler and Kyle King have 11 and 10 state meet medals, respectively, and Natasha Bamberger won five state titles, they and other “early” contenders such as Jeff Fielding and Joy Hack aren’t part of this project.

Unless someone has some handwritten notes stashed in a box out in a barn.

Until then, the best seasons by a CMS track and field athlete between 2008-2023 are listed below.

The list goes 12 deep, and not 10, because of a three-way tie at #10.

It’s an event so big it takes two trips to Lakewood to complete.

Coupeville Middle School track and field athletes officially wrapped their season Wednesday at Day #2 of the Cascade League Championships.

The seven-team royal rumble started May 25, with a ton of prelims and a couple finals, then athletes came back to finish things off on the final day of the month.

The big highlight for Coupeville Wednesday was a win in the high jump from 7th grader Wyatt Fitch-Marron, who soared to an even five feet.

But his triumph wasn’t the only bright spot, as numerous Wolves captured PR’s and CMS nailed down a pair of 2nd place finishes.

Wolf 6th grader Collin Mirabile was runner-up in the shot put, a feat matched by a 4 x 100 relay squad made up of 7th graders Nick Laska, Beckett Green, Roger Merino-Martinez, and Nathan Niewald.

Regardless of where they placed in the standings, every Wolf in competition earned some praise from their coaches.

“Our athletes continued to perform well during our district finals today,” said Jon Gabelein.

“Our 8th grade athletes will be strong additions to the high school track program next year,” he added.

“While the majority of our athletes are 6th/7th grade students this year and provide our program with a great foundation next year.”

While the season is done, the future is a bright one for the young Wolves.

“We are proud of all they accomplished this season,” said fellow CMS coach Amber Wyman. “And I am sure they will continue to improve.”
