Wolf netters stay scrappy

There’s no quit in this group.

Missing three of their eight players Friday, the Coupeville High School girls’ tennis team had no chance to win their match against host Friday Harbor.

But that didn’t mean the Wolves went down easy.

Instead, it was the exact opposite, especially at first singles, where 8th grader Tenley Stuurmans played the best match of the season.

“Hell of a game from our Number 1 singles,” said CHS assistant coach Starla Seal.

With temps of 74 degrees in Friday Harbor, and another 10 degrees warmer on court, Stuurmans fought her way through a three-set thriller against a veteran foe, the battle playing out over nearly three hours.

“She was worn out and exhausted. Played her heart out,” Seal said. “We’re so proud of how she battled. I’ve never seen anyone play as hard as her.

“I’m excited to have her with us the next four years.”

With no home courts this season, the Wolf netters have spent the entire campaign living on the bus and ferry, something which will continue with the district tourney, which goes down next Friday, May 17 in Seattle.

It’s been a learning experience for the players and first-year coaches Seal and Tim Stelling, but the positives are definitely there.

“Great way to end the season with an exciting match to watch,” Seal said. “Win or lose, there’s something to take away and learn from this match.”

1st Doubles — Kauri Hamilton/Sofia Phay lost to Kira Clark/Megan Mellinger 6-0, 6-0

Wolf netters battle Blazers to tie

It was a different twist on a match.

Playing in Seattle Wednesday against The Bush School, the Coupeville High School girls’ tennis team battled to a 3-3 tie in a bout comprised of mini-rumbles.

The host Blazers opted to play cut-down sets to three points, win by one, as opposed to the normal play to six, win by two.

Still, that gave Coupeville a chance to get court time, so valuable as new coaches Tim Stelling and Starla Seal guide a small squad in need of experience.

Next up for the Wolves, who are on a season-long road trip as new courts are built at CHS, is a trek to Friday Harbor this Friday, April 26.

Net aces put up strong fight

They’re two programs in very different places.

University Prep had 41 girls try out for tennis this season, and fields three teams, while Coupeville has eight players total, one of whom was away on a mission trip Saturday.

But the plucky Wolves, who are also playing their entire campaign on the road while new courts are built at CHS, didn’t go down easy while playing in Seattle.

Winning both singles matches, with senior team leader Skylar Parker rallying to pull out her victory in a third-set tiebreaker, Coupeville was narrowly nipped 3-2.

The non-conference loss to the Pumas drops the Wolves to 0-5, but team win/loss records aren’t the main objective this year.

Instead, it’s crafting a base of players who can help build the program, and a lot of that may begin with Tenley Stuurmans, just an 8th grader.

She ripped 10+ service aces past her foe Saturday, while her older teammates showed equal fight in their matches.

“Kauri (Hamilton) and Sofie (Phay) had some great rallies and were more aggressive at the net, which is great improvement,” said CHS assistant coach Starla Seal.

“Hafa (Silva De Campos Conceicao) and Delanie (Lewis) had some beautiful rallies as well.”

Seal and Tim Stelling took over the net program after Ken Stange retired and are intent on getting the roster depth back to where it once was.

With that in mind, the Wolf coaches hope to hold a tennis camp this summer for students in grades 3-8 to build interest in the net program.

Meanwhile, the current roster gets right back at it next week, with trips to The Bush School and Friday Harbor on the schedule.

Net crew tangles with Wolverines

The island-hopping adventures continue.

In a season of no home matches, the Coupeville High School girls’ tennis squad is spending a lot of time on busses and ferries, and Wednesday was no different.

This time out, Friday Harbor was the destination, with the young Wolves putting up a scrappy fight before falling 4-1 to their Northwest 2B/1B League rivals.

Coupeville’s varsity win came from its youngest player, 8th grade ace Tenley Stuurmans, boding well for the future.

The Wolves, who sit at 0-4 on the season, get back at it Saturday when they travel to Seattle to face University Prep in a non-conference rumble.

Back to aces, back to volleys

It’s been a while, but they’re back.

Returning to the court after nearly three weeks off, the Coupeville High School girls’ tennis team slugged it out with host South Whidbey Wednesday afternoon.

While the high-flying Falcons cruised to a 5-0 varsity win, the plucky, rebuilding Wolves did win two JV matches.

In a season where every match will be on the road for the Coupeville netters, as they wait for new courts to be finished, the Wolves are 0-3 but gaining valuable experience with every set.

CHS is slated to play six more matches, with their next road trip to Friday Harbor April 17.
