Big day, big stakes!!

Time to make some history.

Tuesday could be a landmark day in Coupeville High School’s two-year-plus run in the 1A Olympic League.

Both the Wolf volleyball and girls’ soccer squads travel to Silverdale for first-place showdowns with the beast of the league, Klahowya.

Win and Coupeville makes a huge statement, claims sole possession of the top slot and breaks an undefeated run.

The Eagle spikers and booters, both 2-0 this season, have each gone 14-0 in league competition since the four-team conference began in 2014.

That puts them second only to Coupeville girls’ basketball, which is 18-0 through the first two winters of play.

Between them, the two schools boast five teams unbeaten in league play, with Klahowya boys’ soccer (12-0) and Coupeville girls’ tennis (11-0) safe at least until the spring.

The Wolves are entering Tuesday’s tilts with the strongest teams each program has boasted since jumping ship from the 1A/2A Cascade Conference.

The booters, who have one of the the state’s two leading scorers in Mia Littlejohn (16 goals in six games), have won three straight and four of their last five.

Coupeville’s spikers, meanwhile, are coming off of a huge win over 2A North Mason and are hitting the road for the first time ever under new head coach Cory Whitmore.

Wolves net huge win!!

Back on track.

With its next four matches league affairs, the Coupeville High School boys’ tennis squad primed the well Monday by smacking a non-conference rival silly.

The Wolves rolled to a 4-1 drubbing of 2A North Mason during a rare appearance at home.

The victory lifted Coupeville, which has played five of eight matches against bigger schools, to 2-6.

More importantly, the Wolves are 1-0 in 1A Olympic League play as they attempt to defend their title.

The next step on that path comes Wednesday, when CHS hops the ferry and travels to Chimacum (0-1 in league).

Five of the seven matches remaining on the schedule are against either Chimacum or Klahowya (1-1) and will determine who wears the crown in 2016.

Monday marked an unusual occurrence, as the Wolves passed over the halfway mark of the fall tennis season without having a single match affected by weather.

Lose the battle, win the war!!

You take your lumps and move on, eyes on the prize.

The win-loss record for the Coupeville High School boys’ tennis squad is a bit deceptive these days.

After absorbing a 6-1 non-conference thrashing at North Kitsap Friday, the Wolves sit at 1-6, which isn’t their usual level of success.

But, like I said, it’s a bit deceptive.

Coupeville’s schedule so far has been heavy in 2A schools, with the small-school Wolves sending their young roster into battle against much-bigger teams in four of seven matches.

Toss in a private school like Overlake here, and a traditional power like South Whidbey there, and it’s been a brutal run.

But, in the race that really matters — the battle to repeat as 1A Olympic League champs — CHS is still sitting pretty, atop the standings at 1-0.

In the week ahead the Wolves will get a chance to sharpen their game (and put a stranglehold on another title), playing two of three matches against their biggest rivals.

After opening with a home match against North Mason (yes, another 2A school) Monday, Coupeville plays at Chimacum (0-1 in league) Wednesday, then welcomes Klahowya (1-1) to Whidbey Friday.

Those last two clashes will put the Wolves at the midway point of their six-match league season.

“Hopefully we get back on track next week,” said CHS coach Ken Stange.

The South rises, again…

Well, it didn’t rain, so that was a positive.

Keeping alive an unprecedented run for fall tennis, the Coupeville boys net squad completed its sixth straight match without interruption Thursday.

That was about the end of the good news for the Wolves however, as they took a 4-1 beating at the hands of host South Whidbey in a non-conference bout.

The loss dropped Coupeville to 1-5 heading into another out-of-league road tilt Friday, this time against 2A North Kitsap.

Facing off with the Falcons, who are generally the cream of the crop when it comes to Whidbey tennis, the Wolves lone win was a three-set affair at second doubles.

William Nelson and Joey Lippo rallied in the third set to wax their rivals 6-1, making up for dropping the second set.

Strategy.

It’s what separates mere coaches from gurus, and longtime Coupeville High School tennis head honcho Ken Stange has always lived in the second category.

He proved that once again Friday, shuffling his roster and playing mind games with visiting Klahowya, then watching his Wolves dance away with a 4-3 win and sole possession of first-place in the 1A Olympic League.

After battling large schools and private schools in preparation, Coupeville passed its first test to defending its league title.

While there are still five league matches to go — three against Chimacum and rematches with Klahowya Sept. 30 and Oct. 6 — the Wolves are sitting pretty at 1-0.

And they got there because Stange read the tea leaves and beat Klahowya at its own game, primarily by pulling Nick Etzell from his normal #1 singles slot and instead deploying him as half of a doubles duo.

It worked beautifully, as Etzell and partner-for-the-day Jakobi Baumann capped a Wolf sweep in doubles play.

“We swept the top three doubles matches with ease. The question was, how would a pair of singles players fare at #4 doubles,” Stange said. “After a bit of a rocky start, they rolled to victory.

“Jakobi got more steady and consistent as the match wore on, and Nick was able to take full control of the court,” he added. “I’ve asked him to do many things over the years — singles, and doubles with a plethora of partners.

“Today I asked for something different. I needed him to step up and take over a doubles match. He did just that.”

The coaching change-up forced Etzell to alter his style of play, and he responded beautifully.

“It’s a bit out of his character to be so assertive on court. He likes to share the load, so to speak,” Stange said. “Today, he covered a great deal of court real estate, and he lit up his opponents with a combination of touch angle shots and devastating power.

“It was so impressive!”

While all three other CHS doubles teams rolled, the win at #3 from Wolf seniors Jimmy Myers and Grey Rische was extra-notable, as it improved the duo to 5-0 on the season.
