Wynter Thorne, always in season.

Wynter Thorne, always in season.

Wynter Thorne is a scrapper.

Whether patrolling the basketball hardwood or the tennis court, the Coupeville High School senior never lets up. She fights for every point with an admirable intensity.

Last year was her breakout year, as she advanced to the postseason in both her sports.

A hustler with a motor that never quits, Thorne was a ball of fire with a basketball in her hand, then nimbly shifted to tennis without missing a beat.

Normally a doubles player, she stepped up to play singles at one point against Granite Falls.

The result? A 6-0, 6-0 win for the Wolf ace and another quiet smile as she exited the court.

As she celebrates her birthday today, the best is still ahead for Miss Thorne.

With Coupeville moving into a new league, Wynter and her fellow seniors will be asked to carry the burden of leadership. Which shouldn’t be a problem.

The uniforms on the other bench may have changed, but the fate of rival players hasn’t.

You’re about to be sliced ‘n diced. You may be ready for spring, summer and fall, but when Wynter hits, all the preparation in the world won’t save you.

She may be sweet-natured off the court, but, between the lines, she’s a force of nature waiting to be unleashed on your heads.

Happy birthday, Wyntah! May your senior year play out exactly the way you hope.

Samantha Martin

Samantha Martin

Samantha Martin gets it.

The Coupeville High School junior, who celebrates her birthday today, knew the truth even as a freshman.

That was when I ran a feature story on her, as she headed into her first try at playing basketball.

During her interview I asked about favorite movies and music and this is what she had to say:

“My favorite movie is “21 Jump Street,” because, honestly, who doesn’t love a cheesy movie for a great laugh?”

“I love ’80s music, because there is more depth in the music back then compared to music nowadays.”

Smart. Dang smart with impeccable taste.

So, it’s little wonder that she has gone on to become a member of the National Honor Society.

Away from the classroom, Martin has played volleyball, basketball and tennis, becoming a talented doubles player who wields an often-ferocious racket.

She’s a bit of a quiet star, but the example she sets, especially for her large pack of younger siblings, is impressive.

Nimbly mixing athletics with academics, and doing it all with a real sense of grace and happiness, Samantha is a winner.

Happy birthday, Miss Martin. Coupeville is lucky to have you.

tennis

Pertinent info and such.

Oh, it’s on.

The talk has been talked, and now the walk will be walked. Or … played. Probably played.

The call has been put out for tennis players of all ages to converge on South Whidbey High School Sept. 5-7 for the 2014 All Island Doubles Tournament.

With two levels, one for advanced players and one for beginners, and four events (16 and under, ladies, mens and mixed doubles) there’s something for everyone who wields a racket.

And over it all looms the bearded legend of CHS tennis guru Ken Stange, a master racket wielder (and sometimes barefoot tennis player) who is coming for all your trophies.

Do you have the gumption to face him and his (as of yet) unnamed partner(s) in a bid to claim championship hardware and cosmic glory?

Of course you do. You’re still reading this far into the story, so yes, the answer is yes.

Now go and be gone and make haste to sign up. For mortal combat has been planned and your part in the festivities is ready to be played out.

Oh, and if you want more info, take a gander at the facsimile of an entry form above. It’ll give you twice the info in half the time it would take me.

ATM is 99.2% gone and King’s is nowhere to be seen, so that’s a start.

The schedules for Coupeville High School’s first season in the 1A Olympic League are out, and, despite the fact that there could still be plenty of tweaks before we reach September, they make for interesting reading.

With the exception of one boys’ tennis match with Archbishop Thomas Murphy, the only team the Wolves will face from their former league, the 1A/2A Cascade Conference, is Island rival South Whidbey.

The two Whidbey schools will continue to meet in all four fall sports, keeping the rivalry strong, though the games will now be non-conference affairs.

Still, Wolves gotta eat Falcon meat.

Coupeville will play each of its new league rivals — Chimacum, Port Townsend and Klahowya — home and away, while picking up some old-school rivals again like Concrete and Darrington for non-league games.

Also, the first person to figure out where first-time soccer foe Crosspoint Academy is located gets a gold star.

OK, it’s in Bremerton. Now I know, and knowing is half the battle.

The Coupeville High School sophomore-to-be was a standout volleyball and tennis player as a freshman and the tales of her middle school basketball exploits — when she made two King’s players run out of the gym crying — are legends still echoing through the hallways of the gym.

As she heads into summer vacation, we take a quick look back at an earlier moment, when she and little sis Zoe showed they were champion fish catchers, as well.

Once a champ, always a champ.
