Every second counts. Every inch matters.

As the high school track and field season turns towards the homestretch, every week presents a shuffling of the top marks across the state.

That’s shown this time around, as Coupeville stars try and hold on to their places among the best athletes in the 2B classification.

For the moment, Lyla Stuurmans (800) and Cael Wilson (long jump), who were in the top 10 last Monday, get bumped. But they can get back in.

The Wolves host the Coupeville Classic Invite this Saturday, April 26, before beginning the postseason run through the league, district, and state meets.

The finish line nears, but the battle rages.

Where the Wolves sit among all 2B athletes statewide through April 21:

They’re on a rocket ship.

Jumping seven spots, the Coupeville High School softball squad has cracked the Washington Interscholastic Activities Association Top 10 RPI rankings for the first time this season.

Coming off a 20-0 win at La Conner Tuesday, the Wolves sit at 8-1 on the season and are ranked #10 among 2B schools.

That includes wins over two 1A rivals (East Jefferson and Meridian) and a 2A squad (Lakewood), with their only loss a one-run defeat to 3A Oak Harbor.

Aaron Lucero’s sluggers play their next six games at home on the prairie, starting with a Thursday rematch with La Conner.

The Wolves had a good weekend.

Back from a two-week break, the Coupeville High School track and field squad lit up the Birger Solberg Invitational in Bellingham Saturday, and it has paid off big time.

As we scan the best times and distances statewide, there are 12 CHS athletes who currently land in the top 10 rankings for 2B schools, with nearly half of those top-level performances having been thrown down two days ago.

There’s still plenty of time, and competition, left in the season, starting with a home meet this Wednesday at Mickey Clark Field for the Wolves.

But here’s where we sit through April 14:

GIRLS:

800 — Lyla Stuurmans (8th) 2:33.53

Shot Put — Katie Marti (7th) 32-11

Their time on the sidelines is done.

With spring break having played out last week, Coupeville High School track and field athletes could do little more than bide their time with no new meets.

That allowed for other prep stars from across the state to slip past the Wolves in some places on the top 10 charts for 2B schools.

But now, class is back in session and Coupeville returns to competition at the Birger Solberg Invitational in Bellingham this coming Saturday.

For Wolves like Carson Field, who slipped from #1 to #4 in the 800 over the course of the past week, the chance to control their own fates is once more open.

Let the number-crunching begin anew!

For now, through April 7, here’s where CHS oval queens and kings sit among all 2B competitors:

GIRLS:

800 — Lyla Stuurmans (8th) 2:33.53

Shot Put — Katie Marti (7th) 32-08

Pole Vault — Aleksia Jump (7th-tie) 7-00

BOYS:

800 — Carson Field (4th) 2:05.85

4 x 100 Relay — Marquette Cunningham, Matthew Ward, Preston Epp, Chase Anderson (9th) 46.20

Pole Vault — Wilson (6th) 11-06; Axel Marshall (8th) 10-06

Another week in the books; another week of watching the numbers move up and down.

Every meet produces new results, as the statewide Top 10 performance list for 2B track and field athletes fluctuates.

As we sit here on Mar. 31, there are 12 Coupeville High School stars on that tally, with Cael Wilson appearing twice.

And, if state titles were given out in March instead of May, Wolf senior Carson Field would join an exclusive list, as he currently tops everyone in the 800.

But there’s still a long way to go, so check back next week, and the week after that, and so on.

For now, at this moment:

GIRLS:

800 — Lyla Stuurmans (6th) 2:33.53

Shot Put — Katie Marti (6th) 32-08

Pole Vault — Aleksia Jump (10th) 7-00
