Wolf track gets back to work

It’s like the Wild West out here, or at least the version depicted in films.

There’s always another gunfighter coming around the corner, looking to make a name for themselves by plugging you in the back.

Take a week off from competition, like the Coupeville High School track and field team just did, and it’s likely your numbers, no matter how good they are, will slip a bit.

Take a look at the Top 10 list for 2B schools and that’s what you’ll see, as the Wolves only held on to two slots from a week ago.

Carolyn Lhamon is still 3rd in the shot put and Alex Murdy remains 2nd best in the long jump.

Every other Coupeville athlete on the list took a hit, including Lyla Stuurmans (400) and the boys 4 x 100 relay team being temporarily nudged out of the top spot by active athletes.

But there’s good news.

The Wolves get back at it this week, with a home meet Wednesday and a trip to Snohomish Saturday, giving Whidbey’s gunslingers two chances to return fire.

As the season continues to follow its winding path, where CHS athletes land among all 2B athletes through April 17:

Zip, fling, win — again and again

The finish line inches closer.

With another week of track and field action in the books, the Top 10 rankings for 2B shift, with new names popping up in places, and Coupeville High School making its presence felt.

As of Apr. 10, there are 18 Wolves on the big leaderboard, with CHS owning two #1 slots.

Super sophomore Lyla Stuurmans remains atop the girls 400 rankings, while a boy’s relay team of Tim Ursu, Tate Wyman, Aidan Wilson, and Dominic Coffman are your new leaders in the 4 x 100.

Wilson is currently in the Top 10 in five different events, which is one more than the limit for Washington state prep athletes during a meet.

The Wolf senior is one of eight Wolves to appear more than once, with junior Nick Guay showing up three times.

With two regular season meets left in April, and then the league/districts/state gauntlet in May, things can (and will) still change.

But for now, here’s where the Wolves land among the best in 2B:

Top Wolves vie for track glory

Six down, three to go.

Having cleared March and sailed into April, the Coupeville High School track and field team is two-thirds of the way through its regular season meets.

The Wolves have that aforementioned trio of events on the schedule this month, which will take them to Bellingham, Snohomish, and Lakewood, then open the postseason with the Northwest 2B/1B League Championships May 3.

With one eye on current things, and one eye on the upcoming gauntlet of league, district, and state meets, Coupeville’s top athletes are all trying to post their best times and distances.

As of Apr. 3, there are 14 Wolves — nine boys and five girls — who hold a spot in the top 10 in at least one event when all 2B athletes are compared.

Senior Aidan Wilson leads the way, with five appearances on the big chart, while Dominic Coffman, Carolyn Lhamon, Nick Guay, Mitchell Hall, and Tate Wyman pop up twice.

Wolf sophomore sensation Lyla Stuurmans is currently the only Coupeville competitor to be ranked #1 in an event, as she has the fastest 400 run of the season.

Wolves bid for track glory

The numbers tell a positive story.

As the high school track and field season continues to unfold, Coupeville, which has its biggest roster in decades, continues to draw notice.

The latest accolade comes from Evans Rankings, whose computer currently ranks the Wolf boys as the #3 team in 2B, while placing the CHS girls at #6.

Chewelah’s boys and Okanogan’s girls top those standings at the moment.

Plus, scan the results on Athletic.net, and you’ll find a large pack of Wolves hanging out in the upper echelons, as well.

Wolves set the pace

It’s still really early.

The state track and field championships are a solid two months away, and Coupeville High School is scheduled to appear in 10 more meets between now and then.

But … if the season ended today, the Wolves would have a new state champ.

That’s because, as of Feb. 20, sophomore Lyla Stuurmans is the fastest 2B girl in the 400.

“The Franchise” leads an impressive list of Wolves currently ranked in the Top 10 among all athletes in Coupeville’s classification.

Early or not, give them their props for what they’ve accomplished through the first two meets of the season.
