Turner is king of the mat

Make sure they remember your name.

Alex Turner is the only Coupeville High School wrestler, so it’s up to him to carry the torch for an entire school.

Saturday afternoon the Wolf senior wrote another successful chapter, sweeping three matches as he won a title at the Arlington JV Tournament.

Competing at 182 pounds, with his opponents coming from much-bigger schools, Turner ripped through his bouts.

After pinning both of his first two foes in the opening round of their matches, he settled for a win by decision (9-2) in the championship bout.

Since CHS doesn’t have a wrestling program Turner trains and travels with 3A Oak Harbor. He’ll return to 1A for the postseason.

Nothing comes easy in wrestling.

Returning from an extended holiday break, Coupeville High School senior Alex Turner was back on the mat Saturday, but minus a fair amount of poundage.

Getting ready for the run up to the postseason, he shaved off 12 pounds, going from the 182-pound class back to the 170-pound level where he was a state meet alternate as a junior.

Turner’s first crack at his new/old level came at the Panther Classic in Snohomish, where he went 1-2 Saturday while facing wrestlers from much-larger schools.

Repping 1A Coupeville, while training and traveling with 3A Oak Harbor, Turner opened Saturday against Kevon Zakula, who grapples for Westview, a 6A school from Portland, OR.

Zakula took the match by fall at the 5:37 mark, but Turner rebounded to blast Charlie Van Horn of 3A Edmonds-Woodway in the next round.

The lone Wolf dropped his foe after just 40 seconds of mat action.

Turner closed out his day with a close loss to Dylan Owen of 4A Glacier Peak, taking a fall at the 3:45 mark.

Wolf JV spikes big schools!!

No fear.

Playing against much-bigger schools Saturday, the Coupeville High School JV volleyball squad more than held its own at a tournament in Oak Harbor.

The Wolves, repping one of the smallest 1A schools in the state, went spike-to-spike with rivals from larger classifications, ultimately winning five of nine sets.

CHS finished second in pool play, sweeping two sets from 2A Cedarcrest, while splitting sets with 3A Marysville Pilchuck and 4A Mount Vernon.

Advancing on to the single-elimination championship bracket, the Wolves pushed 4A Kamiak to the brink before bowing out in a hard-fought three-set rumble.

“Good tournament for the JV,” said Coupeville coach Chris Smith. “Overall good play from our team.”

Lucy Sandahl, Zoe Trujillo, Maddie Vondrak and the rampaging Vick sisters, Raven and Willow, carried the team on their back, but Smith was able to give quality floor time to everyone in uniform.

Anya Leavell and Abby Mullholland split time at middle while Jaimee Masters and Abby Meyers shared time at libero.

Kylie Van Velkinburgh and Ivy Leedy pulled duty on the front row, with Noelle Daigneault firing away from the service stripe.

The stat sheet was fairly balanced, with Trujillo (16 kills, nine digs and seven aces), Sandahl (36 assists, 15 aces) and Vondrak (15 kills, 6 digs) topping the charts.

Raven Vick whacked seven kills and went low for eight digs, while Willow Vick accumulated four kills, three digs and six aces.

Taekwondo tourney invades CHS gym!!

Prepare for combat.

The Coupeville High School gym will be crammed full of taekwondo fighters Saturday, Feb. 24, as 200-250 competitors take to the mats to vie in the “Battle on the Island.”

Entrants are expected from multiple states and at least two countries (USA and Canada), and may run the gamut from ages 3-70.

The tourney, which is being run by Armstrong’s ATA Martial Arts, opens the doors at 7:30 AM.

Entry fee is $5.00 for fans, with ages five and under free.

The opening ceremonies kick off at 8:30, with the tourney action starting at 9:00 and running all day.

Multiple forms of taekwondo, some involving weapons, will be involved, with eight events in all.

San Antonio sweep for Stone!!

The only thing that can cool them off is an enforced winter break.

Coupeville grad Makana Stone and the Whitman College women’s basketball team drilled a ranked foe Thursday, completing a clean sweep at the Trinity University Classic in San Antonio.

The 82-59 victory over the tourney hosts lifts the Blues, ranked #8 in NCAA D-III hoops, to 10-1.

With two wins by rout in as many days, Whitman heads home for the break riding a 10-game winning streak.

Stone and Co. are now off until Jan. 5, when they kick off a four-game home stand in Walla Walla.

The foe that night will be Pacific, and the game will start the heart of the Northwest Conference season for Whitman.

Currently sitting at 2-0 in league play, and in a first-place tie with George Fox, the Blues play their final 14 regular season games against conference opponents.

Thursday afternoon pitted Whitman against the #13 team in the nation, but it wasn’t as close a match-up as might have been expected.

The Blues led 16-13 after one quarter, stretched the margin to 41-33 at the break, then steadily pulled away after halftime.

The second half was when Stone did much of her damage, as she scored all eight of her points after the break.

The sophomore sensation added six rebounds, two assists and two steals, while All-American Casey Poe paced the Blues with 22 points.

For the season, Stone leads Whitman with 153 points on 58-90 (64%) shooting from the floor and 21-28 (75%) from the free throw line.

She also has 63 rebounds, 23 assists and eight steals.
