California invasion, successful.

Coupeville High School junior booter Mia Littlejohn played four games in three days this weekend, helping the Bellingham Rangers finish 3rd in an eight-team flight at the Pleasanton Rage Tournament.

Littlejohn was one of four guest players for the Rangers, who finished 2-1-1 at the tourney.

Bellingham was one of two select girls’ soccer teams reppin’ Washington state, with the Rush G99 squad taking the tourney title.

There were five Californian teams and one squad from Utah also in their flight.

The Rangers absorbed their only loss Friday, when they were nipped 1-0 by Outlaws FC ’00G Black of Utah.

That was the only goal Bellingham gave up during the tourney.

Saturday was a rebound day, with the Rangers waxing two Cali teams — shutting out Placer United 98G Black 3-0 and slipping past Ajax East Bay AEB 99G 1-0.

Bellingham closed out play Sunday with a hard-fought scoreless tie against Davis Legacy 98 White.

Littlejohn played the entire way in all four games, as the Rangers had no subs for the tourney.

While she had to stay back on Whidbey (she’ll get to see the games later thanks to someone taping them) proud mom Dawn Hesselgrave was over the moon to see her oldest daughter get another crack at playing in a top-tier event.

Mia really enjoyed playing with the team and the challenge it offered,” Hesselgrave said. “Sometimes you need the challenge in order to keep you interested and motivated.”

Cameron Toomey-Stout has helped the Wolf young guns get out to a 4-1 start.

Clear your Saturday.

Coupeville High School’s rampaging JV baseball team has added a three-team home tourney to the schedule, with rematches against both of their Island rivals.

The three-game tourney, which will feature three-inning games, kicks off at 11 AM this Saturday, Apr. 16 at the CHS baseball field.

The tourney will open with Coupeville facing off with Oak Harbor’s C-Team, a week after the two schools split a doubleheader in North Whidbey.

Then, after a match-up between the Wildcats and South Whidbey, the finale will feature the Wolves and Falcons, followed by a barbecue.

Coupeville’s JV squad (4-1 on the season) also hosts Concrete in a regular game tomorrow (Wednesday, Apr. 13).

First pitch is 4:15 PM.

One win in the books, the Wolves prepare for weekend play.

There’s more than one star in the family.

A day after older brother Dalton snapped Coupeville High School’s all-time mark in the discus, Logan Martin captured his own magical moment.

Banging home a bucket in the waning moments Friday night, off of a pass from Miles Davidson, Martin lifted Coupeville’s 6th grade SWISH boys’ basketball squad to a huge 25-23 upset of Meridian.

The win, coming on the road at LaVenture Middle School in Mt. Vernon, was in a seeding game for the two-day Tulip Tournament, which kicks off Saturday.

Coupeville will open against Sedro-Woolley (11:15 AM tip) at La Conner Middle School.

Dedicating Friday’s game to teammate Bennet Boyles, who has been in and out of Children’s Hospital with an illness, the Wolves came out extremely scrappy Friday night.

Hawthorne Wolfe went for six points in the early going, and that, combined with buckets from Caleb Meyer and Martin, gave Coupeville a 10-0 lead.

The Wolves cooled a bit after that, but held on, with six of the eight players in attendance scoring.

Meridian rallied late, nailing a three-ball and taking advantage of the absence of Meyer, who fouled out in the fourth, to knot things at 23.

Davidson made off with a steal, however, feeding Martin for what would be the game-winning bucket.

After Meridian missed a pair of free throws which could have tied the game back up, speedy Wolf guard Connor Barton ran the clock out to cue the celebration.

Before foul trouble nailed him, Meyer paced Coupeville with eight points, five boards and two assists.

Wolfe banked home six, Martin knocked down four, Barton tickled the twines for three and Davidson and Danny Barajas each chipped in with a bucket to round out the scoring.

Coupeville hit the boards aggressively, with Martin (6), Barajas (6), Davidson (6), Wolfe (4), Cody Roberts (2) and Jacob Kendall (1) all snatching caroms.

They are right there, on the cusp.

Coupeville’s 5th grade SWISH girls’ basketball squad (with two 6th graders joining the cause) went 3-2 at a weekend tourney in Bellingham, claiming second-place overall.

It’s the fifth time this season a Wolf girls team has played for a title, but Coupeville has yet to win one.

“Close … so close,” said Dustin Van Velkinburgh. “Very proud of their effort. Good things on the horizon for these young ladies.”

Coupeville went 2-1 on Saturday, losing just a narrow two-point game to Lynden, then knocked off Nooksack in the opening game Sunday on a late three-ball.

The Wolf stars of the future include Kylie Van Velkinburgh, Izzy Wells, Savina Wells, Gwen Gustafson, Alita Blouin, Maddy Georges, Dakota Thomas, Nariah Johnson, Lilah Stuurmans and Caroline Lhamon.

Gunslingers in braids.

Gunslingers in braids.

And the awards keep on rainin’ down.

A couple of hours after Coupeville’s 6th grade SWISH girls’ basketball squad captured second place in their postseason tourney Saturday, the 5th grade Wolves duplicated their feat.

The younger squad, coached by Lark Gustafson and Scott Hay, bounced the Bulldog Ballers 25-22 in their opening game, then were nipped 19-16 in the title game to the Burlington-Edison Hotshots.

In the championship Stella Johnson was on fire, raining down a team-high eight points.

Alita Blouin, Caroline Lhamon, Dakota Thomas and Gwen Gustafson also scored for Coupeville.
