Wolf alumni reunite at college track meet

Wolves may wander, but ultimately, they come back together.

Coupeville grads Tate Wyman and Logan Martin attend different colleges, but Saturday they were both in Clackamas for the Larry Byerly Invite.

Wyman, a freshman at Oregon Tech, ran in the 110 hurdles and 200, setting a PR in the latter and just missing a PR in the former.

He hit the tape in 23.66 seconds in the 200 and zipped across the line in 16.53 in the hurdles, just shy of his collegiate best of 16.51.

Meanwhile, Martin, a sophomore at Central Washington University, chucked the discus 130 feet, 10 inches. finishing 15th out of 48 competitors.

That came on the heels of a fourth-place finish in the hammer the day before.

Martin actually pulled double duty Saturday, competing while also assisting keeping field events humming along.

“They actually took his construction management skills and put him to work to help figure out the measuring system,” said dad Bob. “He’s working and throwing today.”

Wolf grads throwin’ across the USA

East coast to West coast, there’s a former Wolf throwing everywhere.

Coupeville grads Taygin Jump and Logan Martin were both in action at the collegiate level Friday, with the former in New York and the latter in Oregon.

Jump, a freshman at Plattsburgh State, was at the RPI Under the Lights Invitational in Troy, where she finished seventh in the javelin (out of 22 competitors) and 8th in the hammer throw (out of 24 chuckers).

Her throws landed 83 feet, two inches, and 112-06, respectively.

Meanwhile, Martin, a Central Washington University sophomore, was busy at the Larry Byerly Invite in Clackamas, a day after competing in Spokane.

He earned fourth in a 33-man field in the hammer throw Friday, lobbing the implement 174-01.

During their CHS days, both former Wolf aces were multi-sport stars.

Jump played volleyball in addition to her track and field activities, while Martin was on tennis, basketball, and soccer squads before earning three second-place performances at the state track meet his senior season.

Hammer flies, Martin celebrates

He was ready for the spotlight.

Coupeville grad Logan Martin, now a sophomore at Central Washington University, won the hammer throw Thursday at the Whitworth Twilight meet in Spokane, crushing his foes.

The former Wolf chucked the implement 179 feet, which put him way ahead of runner-up Cody Wheeler of Whitworth, who notched a throw of 156-01.

In all, Martin bested a field of 15 athletes.

He also competed in the discus at Thursday’s meet, earning sixth place (out of 20 throwers), chucking it 135-01.

Martin, a four-sport star during his CHS days, will get right back at it Friday, when he travels to Portland to throw the hammer in the Larry Byerly L & C Invite.

Fab four still a force

They defeated their greatest opponent – inactivity.

Coupeville High School track and field stars haven’t competed since March 28, but four Wolves have stubbornly held on to their spots on the Top 10 lists for 2B athletes.

Three of the four saw their rankings slip just a bit, as other teens had a chance to post new times and heights, but now it’ll be their turn.

The quartet, and their teammates, return to action this coming Saturday, with an appearance at the Forks Lion Club Invitational.

After that the Wolves have four more regular season meets as April plays out, before beginning the postseason run in May.

As classes start back up, and CHS track returns to the day-to-day grind, a look at where Cow Town sits among 2B’s best:

GIRLS:

Discus — Reese Wilkinson (7th) 104-04.50

Pole Vault — Carly Burt (8th-tie) 7-00

BOYS:

High Jump — Nick Guay (2nd-tie) 6-00

Pole Vault — Cael Wilson (5th-tie) 11-00

Break’s done, back to work

Time to get back at it.

Coupeville High School sports teams had the week off for spring break, but with the return to classes next week, the Wolves will also return to competition.

With a fury.

Both CHS softball and baseball have four games this coming week, with home clashes against Sultan (Monday) and La Conner (Thursday) and road trips to Darrington (Tuesday) and Forks (Saturday).

Meanwhile Wolf girls’ tennis is slated to travel to South Whidbey Wednesday, while track and field heads to Forks Saturday for a meet.
