Wild weather, titanic throws

Survive and thrive.

That’s the goal at large track and field meets like Saturday’s Lil’ Norway Invitational at North Kitsap High School.

Call it a success then, as Coupeville, repping one of the smallest student bodies at the 20-team event, held its own, garnering a win in the girls’ discus and 12 PRs.

Wolf senior Reese Wilkinson brought home the title, emerging from a field of 33 throwers.

Not only did she set a PR, but she finished seven feet, six inches ahead of the #2 thrower.

Also having a strong day chucking things was junior Katie Marti, who earned third place finishes in both the javelin and the hammer throw.

She was making her debut in the latter event and was joined by fellow first-timers Erica McGrath and Mason Butler.

Lynden, a powerhouse at the 2A level, held off North Kitsap to claim both the girls and boys team titles, while the Wolf girls made a strong statement, finishing eighth.

As often happens during “spring” in Washington state, the day was full of weather twists and turns.

“Mother Nature never ceases to surprise us with what she has in store for us on our weekend invitationals,” said CHS coach Elizabeth Bitting.

“What started out as a beautiful sunny, warm day ended with gusty winds, light rain, no power and freezing cold athletes.

“Thank goodness those in charge of timing had a generator so the meet could continue.”

While many of the athletes in attendance hailed from large schools, the Wolves never flinched from the challenge.

“Our athletes held up nicely next to the bigger schools,” Bitting said. “There were a few who just missed out on the podium but regardless ran, threw and jumped well.”

Coupeville returns to action next week, with its final two regular season meets.

The Wolves are slated to travel to Lynden Thursday, then to Lakewood next Saturday, before veering off to start the postseason the week after.

CHS grads show up, show out

Everywhere you look, a former Wolf busy at the next level.

Multiple Coupeville grads competed Friday and Saturday in college sports events, from track and field to baseball.

How they did:

 

Taygin Jump:

The Plattsburgh State freshman earned points for her team in both her events at the Middlebury Outdoor Invitational in Vermont.

Jump finished third (out of 11 competitors) in the javelin, chucking it 94 feet, four inches, then came back around to claim sixth (out of 12) in the hammer, with a throw of 113-02.

 

Joey Lippo:

A senior at the University of Maine at Presque Isle, he recorded three hits and scored twice Saturday in Cambridge as the Owls were swept in doubleheader diamond action.

UMPI, which sits at 2-15 on the season, gets right back at it Sunday with another twin bill against the same school.

 

Logan Martin:

The Central Washington University sophomore was at home during the CWU Wildcat Invitational in Ellensburg.

Martin finished fifth in the hammer (out of 21 throwers), launching the implement 170-02, while also claiming eighth (of 20) in the discus with a lob of 135-04.

 

Tate Wyman:

The Oregon Tech freshman was super-busy this weekend, competing in four events at the Raider Invitational in Ashland.

Wyman opened by nailing a PR of 23.53 seconds in the 200 Friday, then ran in the 110 hurdles (16.88), 400 (57.39), and 4 x 100 relay (45.22) a day later.

Snappin’ in the sunshine

Give a teen a camera and let them show you a different side of the story.

Jackie Saia does such a great job with her yearbook class at Coupeville High School, and, as the year has unfolded, it’s been impressive to see what her students are capable of producing.

Today the focus moves to Thomas Studer, and a group of pics he shot at a recent home track meet.

As always, I appreciate Saia and her students being willing to share their work through my blog.

This is impressive, immersive work.

Our oval, our wins

The juniors had a bang-up day on Senior Night.

The Class of 2025 accounted for seven wins Wednesday, as the Wolf track and field stars defended their home turf at the Coupeville Classic Invite.

Overall, CHS won 13 events, including sweeping both boys relay races.

The combination of individual success and strong depth carried the Wolves to convincing team title wins, as well.

The CHS girls racked up 184 points, while their male counterparts amassed 166.5, putting both squads well ahead of runner-up East Jefferson in both battles.

Lynden, Clallam Bay, Crescent, and Friday Harbor rounded out the field Wednesday, with the Wolves piling up 63 PRs.

“The number of high fives we were giving today, they racked up some PRs,” said Wolf coach Bob Martin. “They were kicking ass today!”

Juniors Lyla Stuurmans (400, 800, Long Jump) and Katie Marti (Shot Put, Javelin) led the way as multiple event winners, while senior Nick Guay captured the high jump title and ran a leg on both triumphant relay units.

Other Wolf individual winners included Reese Wilkinson (Discus), Carly Burt (Pole Vault), Mikey Robinett (100 Hurdles), Carson Field (800), and Zac Tackett (Discus).

“It was an AMAZING DAY!” said CHS coach Elizabeth Bitting.

“So proud of all our athletes! Those wins and PRs were BEAUTIFUL!!! ALL so very well deserved!!”

The sun was out, seniors were honored, quality chili was eaten, top times were recorded, and, in a significant side moment, local bus drivers helped keep things hopping.

East Jefferson, which is a unified program that Port Townsend and Chimacum created after Coupeville left the Olympic League, had ferry reservation issues which left their bus on the mainland.

Their athletes could have been stranded at the Coupeville dock — miles from town — but Island Transit agreed to swoop in and pick them up and transport them to the CHS oval in time for the meet.

“Island Transit went above and beyond!” Bitting said.

As did Wolf moms, especially Courtney Pilgrim.

“She steps up, when everyone else steps back,” Martin said.

“She and the parents provide quite the spread for our coaches and volunteers. Five hours of go, they need to be refueled.”

Savina soars in the sunshine

Savina Wells is touching the sky in Florida.

The former Coupeville standout, now a junior at Fernandina Beach High School, is off to a stellar start to her latest track and field season.

Wells has swept to titles in all three meets where she’s participated in the high jump, with a season-best of four feet, 11.75 inches in her most-recent outing.

Her PR of 5-00 from her sophomore season would have her sitting just shy of the girls’ school record of 5-02 — jointly held by Yashmeen Knox and Ryanne Knoblich — if she still lived in Cow Town.

Wells also has a second place and a pair of third-place performances in the javelin this season, while also competing in the discus and long jump.

The younger sister of Coupeville grads Ulrik and Izzy, Savina excelled at every sport she played while growing up on Whidbey, before the family moved to the Sunshine State after her freshman year.

At Fernandina Beach, “The Chosen One” (a nickname I can use if she lives in another state) has played volleyball and basketball in addition to spending time around the track oval.
