They endured.

Competing on a ferociously wet afternoon in Mount Vernon Wednesday, Coupeville High School track and field athletes survived the weather while still piling up a fair number of PRs at a 12-team meet.

April arrived with a deluge, leaving Wolf coaches Elizabeth Bitting and Bob Martin to shake their heads in wonder.

“Today was a wet one, we haven’t had many meets like that … soaked to the bones,” said the track gurus.

“Even with Mother Nature trying to steal the spotlight, it was a great team effort, and the athletes showed a lot of grit; they did great.”

While the competitors had long since gone home, complete results from the meet took a while to arrive, not being finished until Thursday afternoon.

Once the stats were final, they showed Coupeville finishing 3rd in the boys’ team standings, while the Wolf girls collected a 4th place finish.

Mount Vernon Christian and La Conner earned team titles in the girls’ and boys’ battles, respectively.

Overall, the Wolves earned 18 PRs in the rain, with two wins from freshman Cyrus Sparacio (1600, 3200) and another from the boys 4 x 400 relay squad.

Coupeville’s track stars will have some time to dry out, with spring break keeping them on the sidelines.

The next meet for CHS arrives April 15, when the Wolves host an 11-team meet at Mickey Clark Field.

Sage Arends flies for the finish line.

Khanor Jump, seen here as a freshman. (Photo courtesy Christina Jump)

He’s like a traveling gunfighter, but with a hammer in his hand instead of an Old West pistol.

Coupeville High School sophomore Khanor Jump was back on the road Sunday, a day after competing with his classmates at a 12-team meet in Stanwood.

This time around, he was back in Lone Wolf mode, participating in the fourth edition of the season-long Hammer Meet Series hosted by the Evergreen State College in Olympia.

Jump chucked his hammer 108 feet, nine inches Sunday, earning a fourth-place finish while vying with rivals from schools such as Kamiak, Tumwater, and Aberdeen.

That’s his second-best throw of the season, and third-best of his high school career.

Following in the footsteps of older sister Taygin, who throws for Plattsburgh State in New York, Khanor’s PR in the hammer throw is 117-02.

The hammer throw is not generally part of regular season high school meets in Washington state, so throwers have to follow their own path, with a season-long series which culminates in a state championship separate from the one offered by the WIAA.

Jump finished 22nd at the hammer throw state championships as a freshman, second-best for a 9th grader.

Wolf freshman Cyrus Sparacio is among the best distance runners in 2B so far this season. (Marquette Cunningham photo)

They’re the fab four.

Coupeville High School currently has a quartet of track and field athletes who land among the top 10 in at least one event when we look at the best statewide in the 2B classification.

Freshmen Tamsin Ward and Cyrus Sparacio are joined by sophomores Lillian Ketterling and Wyatt Fitch-Marron, with Fitch-Marron the highest-ranked.

The only one of these four Wolves with a state meet medal already to his credit, he’s currently #2 in the high jump, an event where he finished 7th at last year’s big dance.

There are still two months to go in the track season, with Coupeville’s next meet coming Wednesday, when it travels to Mount Vernon.

But through Mar. 30, here’s where the Wolves land among the best in 2B:

GIRLS:

Shot Put — Tamsin Ward (5th) 30-10

High Jump — Ward (8th-tie) 4-08

Pole Vault — Lillian Ketterling (7th-tie) 7-00

Coupeville track star Taylor Marrs had a busy Saturday, competing in four events in Stanwood. (Photo courtesy Emili Marrs)

No old farts allowed.

Saturday was all about the young guns, with the Coupeville High School track and field team competing at the 12-team Stanwood Frosh/Soph Invitational.

As the title of the event indicates, the meet was restricted to 9th and 10th graders, with athletes vying against rivals from their own graduating classes.

Though, in a couple of cases, Wolf freshmen moved up a rung and ran in relays with the sophomores.

Despite repping one of the smallest schools in attendance, the 2B Wolves held up well against their larger rivals.

The CHS girls earned a 6th place showing in the team standings, while their male counterparts finished 10th.

The 3A Stanwood girls and 4A Redmond boys, both featuring very deep rosters, finished atop the mountain.

Overall, the Wolves posted 30 PRs, with two athletes winning individual titles.

Freshman Tamsin Ward was tops in the shot put, while sophomore Wyatt Fitch-Marron scraped the sky in the high jump.

That duo has combined to snag five victories across the season’s first three meets.

Coupeville’s entire team gets back into action this coming Wednesday, Apr. 1, when the Wolves travel to the mainland for a Northwest 2B/1B League meet hosted by Mount Vernon Christian.
