One of the smallest schools made some of the biggest noise.

Competing at the 23-team Dave Snyder’s Lil’ Norway Meet in Poulsbo Saturday, Coupeville High School shocked the track and field world in the mixed 4 x 100 relay.

Lining up against big school rivals North Kitsap, Bremerton, Lindbergh, and Clover Park, the Wolves, repping a 2B-sized student body, hit the tape first in a meet record 52 seconds, almost two seconds ahead of the second-place school.

The CHS unit, comprised of Lillian Ketterling, Richmond Bandong, Tamsin Ward, and Liam Blas, includes three sophomores and a freshman.

“Great way to end the meet!!!” said CHS coaches Elizabeth Bitting and Bob Martin as they likely exchanged high fives all the way back to Cow Town.

Coupeville made a last-second detour to even attend the Lil’ Norway meet, as it was originally slated to travel to Forks Saturday before shuffling things.

Bellarmine Prep and Aberdeen took full advantage of deep rosters to claim the girls and boys team titles, respectively, while the Wolves were 17th and 19th.

Along with the huge win in the mixed 4 x 100, Coupeville picked up 12 PRs on the day.

CHS is back in action next Saturday, April 25, but much closer to home, when the Wolves host the Cow Town Classic Invite at Mickey Clark Field.

Arianna Cunningham set PRs in the javelin and triple jump Wednesday afternoon. (Marquette Cunningham photos)

They endured.

Competing on a ferociously wet afternoon in Mount Vernon Wednesday, Coupeville High School track and field athletes survived the weather while still piling up a fair number of PRs at a 12-team meet.

April arrived with a deluge, leaving Wolf coaches Elizabeth Bitting and Bob Martin to shake their heads in wonder.

“Today was a wet one, we haven’t had many meets like that … soaked to the bones,” said the track gurus.

“Even with Mother Nature trying to steal the spotlight, it was a great team effort, and the athletes showed a lot of grit; they did great.”

While the competitors had long since gone home, complete results from the meet took a while to arrive, not being finished until Thursday afternoon.

Once the stats were final, they showed Coupeville finishing 3rd in the boys’ team standings, while the Wolf girls collected a 4th place finish.

Mount Vernon Christian and La Conner earned team titles in the girls’ and boys’ battles, respectively.

Overall, the Wolves earned 18 PRs in the rain, with two wins from freshman Cyrus Sparacio (1600, 3200) and another from the boys 4 x 400 relay squad.

Coupeville’s track stars will have some time to dry out, with spring break keeping them on the sidelines.

The next meet for CHS arrives April 15, when the Wolves host an 11-team meet at Mickey Clark Field.

Sage Arends flies for the finish line.

Arianna Cunningham scored a team-high 10 points Friday night in the regular season home finale. (Jackie Saia photo)

They don’t quit.

That was shown once again Friday night, as the Coupeville High School varsity girls’ basketball team rebounded to play its best ball in the fourth quarter during an otherwise rough game against visiting La Conner.

Facing off with a hot-shooting Braves squad which also dominated on the boards, the Wolves scored nearly half their points in the final frame before falling 57-29.

The loss leaves Coupeville at 1-8 in Northwest 2B/1B League play, 4-13 overall, with just a Feb. 6 road trip to Friday Harbor left on the regular season schedule.

After that, the Wolves will take part in the double-elimination District 1/2 tourney, one of six teams chasing three tickets to state.

CHS will learn its opening opponent, and whether that game is on the road or at home, the day after the regular season ends.

Squaring off with La Conner, which is solidly the number #2 squad in the NWL behind powerhouse Mount Vernon Christian, the Wolves started strongly.

At least for the first three minutes.

Coupeville forced a shot clock violation on the game’s opening possession, before Wolf senior Danica Strong later rippled the nets on a three-ball to give her team its only lead of the night at 3-2.

Then things went off the road and down a deep, dark ravine.

Owning the boards and getting big buckets from senior gunner Maeve McCormick, La Conner ripped off a 17-2 run to end the opening quarter, carrying a 19-5 lead into the first break.

Things got bleaker from there, as the Wolves could only manage a single basket in the second quarter, courtesy a rebound put back up and in by Arianna Cunningham.

Down 37-7 at the half, with shots finding every possible way to roll off the rim or pop back out of the net, Coupeville eventually fell behind 51-10 late in the third quarter.

That triggered a running clock, but it also seemed to trigger Scout Smith’s squad, which hunkered down and made a solid stand over the game’s final 10 minutes.

CHS closed the third on a 6-0 spurt, with Cunningham draining three free throws, before finally finding a consistent shooting groove in the final quarter.

Haylee Armstrong and Tenley Stuurmans both knocked down six points in the fourth, while the Wolf defense ramped up in intensity, led by Cunningham, who was a beast on the boards as usual.

While defense has been her primary calling card this season, Cunningham also showcased some solid offensive mojo Friday, pacing CHS with a season-high 10 points.

Stuurmans (6), Armstrong (6), Strong (4), Teagan Calkins (2), and Adeline Maynes (1) also wrote their name in the scorebook, with Kennedy O’Neill, Lexis Drake, Sydney Van Dyke, and Capri Anter rounding out the roster.

They’re keeping the scorebook operators busy.

Coupeville High School basketball players have combined to rattle the rims for 1,457 points this winter so far, with that number stretched across varsity and JV contests.

Two Wolves — Chase Anderson and Haylee Armstrong — have cracked 100 points, with two more — Tenley Stuurmans and Camden Glover — a single bucket away from hitting triple digits.
