CHS grad delivers on big stage

No matter the day or time, she’s going to give you her best.

Taygin Jump’s odyssey at the State University of New York Athletic Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships went a bit longer than expected this weekend, but the former Wolf finished with a bang.

The Coupeville grad, now a sophomore at Plattsburgh State, started the two-day meet in Cortland, New York on Friday by finishing sixth in the javelin toss, uncorking a throw of 94 feet, two inches.

Then she and her fellow competitors started the hammer throw, only to have poor weather shut things down early.

Instead of finishing Friday, Jump and company returned to the arena at the crack of dawn Saturday, with Aleksia and Khanor’s older sister setting a PR by launching her implement 127-08.

That was three inches better than her previous collegiate high-water mark and earned the Cardinal thrower ninth place out of 20 contestants.

Jump, who played school and club volleyball and competed in track and field during her CHS days, is majoring in Environmental Planning and Management/Geology at Plattsburgh.

New season, new triumphs

Tamsin Ward is back, and so are the wins.

The Coupeville 8th grader kicked off her third, and final, season of middle school track and field Wednesday by doing exactly what she’s done for two years running.

Whomp on people.

Ward, who earned 23 wins across her first two CMS seasons, captured wins in the 100, shot put, and high jump while competing against Northshore Christian Academy and Sultan in her home stadium.

And she wasn’t the only Wolf to have an excellent day, with Diesel Eck and Elizabeth Marshall also claiming parts of three victories.

The former won the shot put and discus while running a leg on a 4 x 100 relay team, while the latter claimed top honors in the 100 hurdles and long jump, then pulled duty on a triumphant 4 x 200 squad.

River Simpson and Cyrus Sparacio were two-time winners, with Coupeville holding its own in the team standings as well.

The Wolf 8th grade girls and boy’s 6th/7th squad captured team titles.

“Our first meet of the season was a great adventure!” said CMS coach Jon Gabelein.

“While some students were more nervous than others about stepping into their first meet of the season, they all showed up ready to work hard and show good sportsmanship at the same time!

“Now that they have their baseline numbers, their continued practice and pushing themselves even more will allow them to generate even stronger results during the coming weeks!”

Ready to rumble.

Wolves push for statewide respect

But wait, there’s more.

The Coupeville High school track and field team has picked up one more regular season meet, after being accepted to this Saturday’s Shoreline Invitational.

That will keep the Wolves busy as they prep for the postseason run of league, district, and state meets, which begin May 7.

It will also give CHS athletes another shot at landing a time or distance which moves them into the top 10 for 2B athletes statewide.

Those lists are ever changing, as you can see by our weekly review below, which has seen changes in just seven days.

As the Wolves make the turn towards the final sprint through May, here’s where Coupeville names pop up on the current top 10 lists for 2B track stars:

“Hard work is paying off!”

It was a classic beatdown.

Winning 12 of 18 events Saturday at the Coupeville Classic Invite, the Wolf boys track and field team destroyed its competition.

When all the points were added up at the regular season finale, CHS male athletes had racked up a score of 190.5.

Or more than the other four teams combined.

Put the scores of Mount Vernon Christian (50.5), East Jefferson (45.5), Clallam Bay (39), and Neah Bay (21.5) together, and they equal 156.5 points.

Sweet sassy molassy.

On the girls’ side of things, everything was a wee bit closer, with MVC (120) taking the team title, followed by Coupeville (93), East Jefferson (88), Neah Bay (62), and Clallam Bay (16).

Top performers included Katie Marti, who claimed three individual titles, winning the shot put, discus, and hammer throw.

Combine relay team wins with individual victories, and Chase Anderson (4), Preston Epp (3), and Cael Wilson (3) topped the Wolf boys.

All in all, it made for “a fast and furious day on the prairie” according to CHS coach Bob Martin.

“Tons of PRs, great team energy, and another strong showing by our volunteers and parents,” he said. “Hard work is paying off!”

Up next for the Wolves is the Northwest 2B/1B League Championships, set to go down May 7 in La Conner.

After that, for those who advance, will be districts and the state championships.
