We have launch!

We have launch!

They beat the rain by a day.

The wet stuff is falling all over the place Friday, but Thursday it was clear skies for the Coupeville Middle School track and field squad as they traveled down the Island to tangle with arch-rival Langley.

While we don’t have results to post yet (we’ll have to see if Langley coaches pull a Northshore and fail to report anything to athletic.net or step up and makes the whole Island proud), we do have photos.

They come courtesy of John Fisken, and, if you like them, head over to the link below to see more (and possibly purchase some). A percentage of all sales goes to fund college scholarships for CHS student athletes.

P.S. — I don’t know all the middle school students by sight, so some photos have names. Others don’t.

Skyler Lawrence had a strong freshman season in all here throwing the discus earlier in the season

Skyler Lawrence made an impact all season, no matter what she was throwing.

Makana Stone is in it to win it.

Pulling back slightly Thursday during the prelims at Tri-Districts, the speedy Coupeville High School sophomore still qualified for Saturday’s finals in both the 200 and 400.

Her performance at Woolsey Stadium in Shoreline was the highlight of the day, as the Wolves ran into top-level competition.

While she didn’t advance to the finals, CHS junior Marisa Etzell did set a PR in the 400.

Freshman Skyler Lawrence was the only Wolf to compete in a final Thursday, finishing 13th in the shot put in her first appearance at Tri-Districts.

Complete Day 1 results:

Power up the spotlight, cause it’s time to shine.

Coupeville High School sends its baseball, softball and track squads into their biggest competitions of the season this week, while Lone Wolf golfer Christine Fields bides her time and waits for next week’s state tourney.

Track and field is up first, with the Tri-District meet, the final stop before state, kicking off Thursday in Shoreline.

The first day is mostly prelims for Makana Stone, Sylvia Hurlburt, Jared Helmstadter and Co., with finals Saturday.

CHS baseball makes its first return to state since 2008 when it travels to Volunteer Park in Anacortes Saturday for a 10 AM showdown with Rochester.

Win and the Wolves return to action later in the afternoon against the winner of Hoquiam and Cedar Park Christian (Bothell), with a trip to Yakima and the Final Four in the balance.

A resurgent Wolf softball squad kicks off Tri-Districts in Janicki Fields in Sedro-Woolley Saturday at 12 PM.

Their opponent will be the #3 seed from District 3 and, if they win the loser-out game, they hang around to play two more games.

The first would be against the winner of Forest Ridge and Lynden Christian. Win two games this weekend and the softballers are state bound as well.

To get you prepared, we offer a medley of photos for your viewing pleasure. Click away.

There have been three middle school track meets this season, and yet I have reported results from only two.

Why, you ask?

Because Northshore Christian Academy can’t get its stuff together, that’s why.

After hosting Coupeville and King’s May 14, Northshore, as the home team, would be expected to post results to athletic.net, the clearing house for all things track related.

They didn’t, though, stiffing the Wolves, both in person and online, leaving CMS without times or distances in any event.

Nothing was posted, nothing was announced in person.

Nada. Zip.

Boo, Northshore! You had one job, and you blew it.

If they had posted times, we’d be able to tell you that 7th grade stars Lindsey Roberts (6:33) and Reed Richards (6:34) set PRs in the 1600.

Well, I guess I just did, thanks to the efforts of CMS coach Janie Rosenkrance, who hand-timed that event, and mom Sherry Roberts, who passed on the info.

But, if you came here looking for stats on Chris Battaglia, the Eck brothers or Kalia Littlejohn, go check with Northshore, cause that apparently is a secret not to be revealed.

Fellow sophomore Jared Helmstadter moves on in the 400 and with two Wolf relay teams.

Fellow sophomore Jared Helmstadter moves on in the 400 and with two Wolf relay teams.

The number of Coupeville High School track and field athletes advancing to tri-districts May 22 and 24 at Shoreline just got bigger.

In the complicated world of high school track, only one thing was a given going into this weekend’s District 1 meet, and that was that the top five finishers in each event advanced on.

After qualifiers from District 2 and 3 were added in, each event would have 13 of the 16 competitors. Those remaining spots would be filled by the best times/throws from any of the three districts.

And that’s where CHS surged, as sixth-place finishes such as freshman shot putter Skyler Lawrence and a couple of Wolf relay teams suddenly jumped back into the picture.

“Pretty good showing for the crew we assembled,” Coupeville coach Randy King said. “Many season bests in the sub-district and my, they were needed.”

Regardless of which Wolves go to tri-districts, the final stop before the state meet, they will face a tough test.

“No guarantees,” King said. “Our tri-district is loaded in the throws and sprints!  We just have to keep after it!”

Tri-District qualifiers:

GIRLS:

100 — Sylvia Hurlburt

200 — Makana Stone, Hurlburt

400 — Stone, Marisa Etzell

4 x 100 Relay — Etzell, Ashlyn Miller, Lauren Grove, Hurlburt

4 x 200 Relay — Hurlburt, Etzell, Grove, Stone

Shot Put — Skyler Lawrence

BOYS:

400 — Jared Helmstadter

4 x 100 Relay — Ryan Griggs, Brandon Kelley, Helmstadter, Lathom Kelley

4 x 400 Relay — L. Kelley, B. Kelley, Sebastian Davis, Helmstadter
