It was all about the girls.

Even with superstar sophomore Makana Stone still largely sidelined by a sore knee, Coupeville High School’s track wins all came from feminine competitors Thursday.

Running against Lakewood and host Granite Falls, freshman Lauren Grove (triple jump), junior Marisa Etzell (400) and the 4 x 200 relay squad all came out on top.

The next pack of Wolf track stars is here, and they’ve got talent to burn.

Competing in the first meet of the season, Coupeville Middle School captured 15 titles Wednesday at a three-team meet in Langley.

And with six of those titles coming from the 7th grade girls, that squad bounced Lakewood and Langley to capture the team title.

Sprinter Kalia Littlejohn and thrower Maddy Hilkey were two-event winners for the 7th grade girls’ squad, while 7th grade boys Ty Eck and Chris Battaglia were the big winners on the male side.

Battaglia took home three titles, winning the 1600 and high jump, while also running a leg on a victorious 4 x 200 relay team.

I think they kinda like each other.

Coupeville High School track stars Makana Stone and Sylvia Hurlburt are close friends on and off the track oval, as shown in this photo where the dandy duo hang out while cheering on the Wolf boys’ soccer squad Tuesday.

OK everyone, take a moment and say, “aaaahhhhh.”

Now go about your Wednesday, content in the knowledge that love and friendship washes across the prairie.

Marisa Etzell (John Fisken photo)

It was a busy day.

With their school’s Prom looming just a few hours ahead, the Coupeville High School track team stole some time to compete at the Terrace Invite in Edmonds Saturday.

Facing off with big school 3A and 2A opponents, the 1A Wolves didn’t win any events, but did get a fifth-place finish from sophomore Lathom Kelley in the hyper-competitive 400.

There were 14 boys’ teams and 13 girls’ squads at the event, with Meadowdale (boys) and meet host Mountlake Terrace (girls) taking the team titles.

Coupeville’s top two athletes didn’t compete, as sprinter Makana Stone has a sore knee and thrower Nick Streubel is expected to be out several weeks with an illness.

Carlie

Mattea Miller

Mattea Miller (foreground), here running with Erin Rosenkranz, finished second in the 800, setting a PR.

The big guns were missing, so everyone else made up for it.

Competing without Makana Stone (sore knee) and Nick Streubel (illness), the Coupeville High School track squad still managed to collect 31 season best marks Thursday at a four-team meet in Duvall.

“Our athletes are making progress!,” said CHS coach Randy King. “Great to see practice effort and skill development leading to improved marks.”

Competing against South Whidbey, Granite Falls and host Cedarcrest, the Wolves nabbed a pair of wins, one slightly more impressive than the other.

The Wolf boys’ 4 x 100 relay squad came home with a first, but since they were the only foursome running in the event, anything less would have been a disappointment.

The bigger victory came in the girls’ 800, where Carlie Rosenkrance edged out fellow Wolf freshman Mattea Miller to nab the title. The pair were more than five seconds faster than any of the big school runners who joined them in the event.
