King still has that ol’ zing

Not a fluke.

When Coupeville grad Kyle King won the Marine Corps Marathon in 2022, it was the first time an active-duty Marine had tasted victory in the event in 30+ years.

Jump forward two years, and the former Wolf, a five-time state track and field champion back in his CHS days, was once again atop the victory stand.

Hitting the tape with a mark of two hours, 25 minutes, and six seconds, King outdueled his closest competition, Air Force Capt. George Henry Crist (2:26:20) and Army Capt. Kyle Smith (2:27:03).

The speedy sensation who sprang from the fertile fields of Cow Town is currently a Major stationed at the Marine Corps Air Ground Combat Center 29 in Palms, California.

The Marine Corps Marathon, which was celebrating its 49th run Sunday, starts at the Pentagon and ends at the Marine Corps War Memorial.

Along the way, runners deal with a rough course full of hills.

King only had six weeks to train for the 2024 race, as he had numerous job responsibilities to juggle, he told an Armed Forces Sports reporter.

Bitting is the best

The rest of the world caught up to Coupeville and realized Elizabeth Bitting is a gem.

The Washington Interscholastic Activities Association, working with the U.S. Army, has hailed the Wolf running guru in its salute to coaches for October.

Bitting was one of six prep leaders honored for showcasing values such as loyalty, duty, respect, selfless service, honor, integrity, and personal courage.

Among the peppiest of all coaches, she has inspired countless cross country and track athletes at both the middle and high school levels during her time in Coupeville.

Falcon spiker coach honored by WIAA

One Whidbey, kicking everyone else’s fannies.

The three public high schools on The Rock are like siblings — they may squabble all the time amongst themselves, but someone from outside gives any of them the stink eye, it’s time to unite and drop the smack-down.

Or jointly celebrate when one does well.

Works either way.

Today the spotlight swings towards Langley, with the news South Whidbey High School varsity volleyball coach Mandy Jones has been honored by the Washington Interscholastic Activities Association.

The organization’s salute to coaches for October, sponsored by the US Army, includes the Falcon spiker guru alongside leaders from Clover Park, Renton, and Fife.

All places that wish they were Whidbey.
