Arms, legs … Katie Marti (15) has many weapons at her disposal. (Photo by JohnsPhotos.net)

One leg to rule them all.

The limb in question belongs to Coupeville High School senior Katie Marti, and she used it to pull off an unusual save/assist combo during a recent volleyball win.

Now, as the Wolves take their pristine 7-0 record to Eastern Washington to play Okanogan Friday night, that play is one of three hailed as a Play of the Week by the Washington Interscholastic Activities Association.

Respect for “The Red Dragon.”

Coupeville High School junior volleyball sensation Teagan Calkins was honored Thursday by the Washington Interscholastic Activities Association, picked as an Athlete of the Week winner.

Each week during the school year, the WIAA honors one girl and boy from each classification (1B-4A).

Athletes can be honored once and receive a letter of recognition, a certificate of achievement, a gift card, and “statewide bragging rights.”

Calkins was picked for her performance Thursday, Sept. 26, when she cranked a career-high 19 kills and collected six digs in a straight-sets home win against Darrington.

The victory, coming against a previously unbeaten Logger squad, lifted Coupeville to 5-0 overall, 4-0 in Northwest 2B/1B League play.

The Wolves have yet to drop a set, reeling off a 15-0 start in regular season play heading into Thursday’s home tilt with Orcas Island.

Calkins, who also plays basketball and softball, is a stellar student, and helps out with the middle school volleyball program, leads the CHS spikers in kills this season while playing on the right side of the floor.

The rankings gods favor Coupeville on this day.

The Wolf varsity volleyball team lands in the top 10 in the assessments of two different organizations as Cory Whitmore’s squad prepares for a home match Thursday against Orcas Island.

The Washington Interscholastic Activities Association has CHS, which sits at 5-0 and hasn’t dropped a set yet, at #3 among 2B schools, trailing just Adna (7-0) and Rainier (7-1).

Meanwhile, the Washington State Volleyball Coaches Association places the Wolves at #7 in their latest tally.

Adna, Manson (8-1), Freeman (7-0), Lind-Ritzville-Sprague (8-0 and Whitmore’s alma mater), Tonasket (8-2), and Rainier comprise the top six.

Cory Whitmore discusses strategy with his spike-happy squad.

Beat the best, soar above the rest.

After sweeping Darrington, viewed as the #3 team in 1B, Thursday night, the Coupeville High School varsity volleyball squad has jumped from #7 to #2 in the Washington Interscholastic Activities Association 2B rankings.

The Wolves, now 5-0 in matches and 15-0 in sets, are nestled right behind Adna (6-0), and right in front of Manson (6-1) and Tonasket (7-1) according to the Ratings Percentage Index (RPI).

So, they’ve got that going for them, which is nice.

They like us. Like, really kinda, sorta like us.

The Washington Interscholastic Activities Association released its first Rating Percentage Index (RPI) rankings Wednesday, and Coupeville High School is among the top 10 in both volleyball and football.

The spikers, who are 4-0 heading into a Thursday home showdown with fellow undefeated Darrington, sit at #7 among 54 schools playing the sport in the 2B classification.

Meanwhile, the Wolf gridiron crew, which has posted a 2-1 record while playing three straight games against 1A schools, finds itself at #9 (out of 48 schools) in the 2B rankings.

Now, does RPI matter? Sort of.

Ask the WIAA and it will tell you RPI “will be one tool utilized by the seeding committees to determine first round bracket pairings into the state tournaments.”

So, there’s that.

It’s also a really good way to start arguments, such as when you look at the current rankings for 2B/1B boys’ soccer teams, where Coupeville is #16.

Mount Vernon Christian at 4-0-1, having outscored foes 12-3, would be a really good #1, but the Hurricanes are at #3.

Instead, Lopez Island, another Coupeville rival from the Northwest 2B/1B League, currently sits at #1 with a record of … 1-0.

Uh huh.

Guess it’s better than last year when the WIAA ranked a team #1 while failing to notice the team didn’t exist…
